Excellent property for someone who likes to swim and snorkel
1Redwing (Chicago, Illinois) on Dec 29, 2024
We've been coming to Barceló Maya Palace for years for one reason only: we like to swim and snorkel. There are 6 hotels within this property, but Palace has the best beach with calmer clear water, great for swimming and snorkeling. The rooms are a bit tired, but specious. We would prefer to stay at adults only hotel, Barceló Rivera, but their beach is rocky with more waves. We've gone to all 3 ala carte restaurants on the Palace property and Brazilian steakhouse was our favorite, it had great gourmet salad bar and good service. French was delicious with small portions, but Caribe needs to improve its wait staff customer skills and friendliness. But our most frequented place was Coral Grill. It has a great view of the Barceló beach, less crowded and wonderful hard working wait staff. We would like to give a huge Thank You to our favorite server, Darwin Perez, who made every breakfast or lunch at Coral special for us, always with the smile remembering all the details of our requests, offering suggestions, even on the busiest of days Darwin was super-efficient. Darwin Perez is one of the reasons we return to Barceló Maya Palace year after year. This year we’ve met another great server in the Coral Grill, Carlos Yah, who went out of his way to make our experience special when dining at the grill, sharing unique details about local cuisine and culture. Carlos’s English was excellent and he always helped with our order details answering any questions we had. Carlos constantly assisted other wait staff with translations to help other tables. We hope to see Carlos Yah again if we return next year! I also would like to mention one more server from Buffet Hacienda, Pedro Chan, where we had our last dinner before leaving. We told Pedro it was our last night at Barceló Maya Palace and he surprised us with special personalized desert plate, where “Have a Good Trip” was spelled out. All of us were so touched! Thank you to all three of these servers for making our Grill and Buffet dining experience memorable. As frequent visitors to Barceló Maya Palace we would like to share some feedback to the Hotel Management: please, improve adult dinner experience at ala carte restaurants, discourage families with small children to make restaurant reservations after 8pm. You’ll get way more satisfied guests and wait staff. Another tip: please, advertise your daily and nightly Entertainment Program better. Post daily activity schedules and nightly shows by the elevators in every building, by the entrance to the buffet and grill. There were wonderful concerts going on in the very spacious Palace theater we just stumbled on coming back from the restaurant and it had very few people in attendance while the hotel was full, just because no one knew about it, it wasn’t posted anywhere on the property during the day. And the last request: please, add more English language channels to your TV program. Majority of the guests in December were English speaking, but you only had ONE permanent English language CNN channel and occasionally activated a few HBOs movie channels in English. We are not coming to Barceló to watch TV, but it would be nice on the rainy days or late nights. Thank you!

Be prepared for long check in times 1/2-1 hour- huge resort needs improvement; late arrival no food or drink provided; outrageous price at shops for incidentals(180ml sunscreen+130 ml aloe Vera gel- $87.64 US); long walk from room to checkout( other Cancun resorts- note to leave bag outside room for transport to lobby and checkout;) no notice provided for daily activities ) Beautiful location ,beach, children’s facilities Food plentiful- restaurant staff attentive Specialty restaurants excellent
