Good for self-reliant travelers

This hotel is a good value for the money in Honolulu. However, I found the reception staff to be polite, but not really welcoming. We are long time Hawaii travelers, so for us this was not a problem. This is not a resort and I did not experience any of the "aloha" found at many similar or even lower price hotels. We had a accessible suite. My husband uses a cane and has mobility issues. However, this suite would not have been acceptable for someone in a wheelchair. The sink did not allow a wheelchair to slide under it. There were a lack of stability bars in the shower and by the toilet. We were able to manage, but someone with more needs really should physically "see" the suite before checking-in. As Hilton Gold, I received the $30/day credit to spend at the restaurant or at the attached Holoholo Coffee Bar. We were their four days and each day the restaurant had a sign outside saying that their P.O.S system was down and hotel charges weren't acceptable. We were able to use the Holoholo Coffee Bar to spend the $30/day credit. This was a good move. There were tasty light meals, fresh fruit, pastries, and sundries at this site. With a microwave in a suite, we were able to eat light breakfasts and evening snacks in our room before venturing out with our local friends. Note: Bring some plastic forks/spoons and paper plates with you. The room was clean, but really needs some updates. It is a bit worn or tired with chipped paint and scuffs. For the space, it was fine. However, I don't believe that we will return.
A return visit, but not the same

This was our second visit to the Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki. A few differences from a few years ago. Cons: - Cell Block '50' for rooms that are right beside the 3 elevators: if you need the sounds of a freight train to sleep then this would be the room for you. If you are a light sleeper, do not get a room ending in '50'. The elevator sounds are constant day and night. To say we were 'under-whelmed' would be an understatement. - No balcony and the window does not open, just a 'city' view that backs onto two other hotels/condos. - Asking for a room change: if they do not have one available is to check out the next morning and re-check back in at 3 pm, the "good news" is they can hold your luggage for you....rather than just have you seamlessly switch rooms without having to check out. (As we booked our package through Costco, we were concerned that having us check out could pose even a bigger problem and weren't willing to risk it and lose precious vacation time.) - Asking for a late check out: this can only be requested on the day of your check out in the early morning (7 AM) and there is no guarantee they will grant you one. Two options: until 3 pm, you would need to pay approximately $60 USD or until 6 pm, you would need to pay $120 USD even if you keep the cell block '50' room. Pros: - The hotel is in a great location with the International Market Place across the street. It is very walkable and easy to get to everything. - The hotel and room was clean and safe. - The pool area is decent with plenty of loungers and pool towels were always available. They also have Sun screen you can use too. - They have pay laundry services available, $4.25 per load for washer and dryer use. You can use a credit card to tap and pay. You do have to buy your own laundry detergent and dryer sheets but there are enough stores nearby so you have options. - The King size bed was really comfortable. - The bathroom was a good size. - The bathroom has fairly decent products for shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion. - The room had a microwave, minifridge, kettle and Keurig. - You could have housekeeping service every day if you prefer. The housekeepers were very friendly and attentive. - The shower had decent water pressure and hot water available at all times. - Staff were polite and professional.
