We had a marvelous time at this resort. It was clean and comfortable and the staff were very warm and helpful. Pools were lovely and the beach was sandy and inviting. Food was good and we never felt rushed in the buffet. I would recommend to anyone who wants to spend time in beautiful Costa Rica!
Worst All-Inclusive Resort I’ve Ever Experienced

I’ve been traveling to all-inclusive resorts since I was 3 years old, and I can confidently say that Occidental Papagayo is the absolute worst. This place is a complete letdown in every aspect. 1. Misleading Amenities The resort advertises a jacuzzi, but it’s nothing more than a room-temperature pool with bubbles. It doesn’t heat up at all, which makes it completely useless for relaxation. Meanwhile, the only hot tub that does get hot is part of the spa, and it wasn’t even turned on when we went to use it. Despite the fact that we had already paid for massages and spa access, they told us we could come back the next day and pay $22 per person, per hour to use it. 2. Awful Food and Limited Hours The food at this resort is shockingly bad. All of the restaurants, including the specialty ones, serve subpar dishes and operate on very limited hours. The Italian restaurant was the worst offender. They served one of my party members a fully raw chicken breast! After sending it back, we were horrified to find that four of us ended up with food poisoning. It completely ruined the rest of our trip. 3. Early Check-In? Not Here! We paid for early check-in, expecting to get our room shortly after arriving at 6 a.m. Instead, we were forced to wait until 3 p.m. That’s nine hours of sitting around with no proper explanation or compensation. 4. Spa Disappointment We decided to splurge on massages to salvage some part of our vacation, but even this was a disaster. The hot tub at the spa wasn’t even functional during our session. For a resort that charges extra for basic amenities, the least they could do is ensure they’re operational. Overall, Occidental Papagayo fails to deliver on every level. Between the misleading amenities, terrible food, and unprofessional service, I wouldn’t recommend this resort to anyone. Save your money and go somewhere else!
