The good, the bad, the ugly, but not in that order.

mitch b (Edmonton, Canada) on Dec 27, 2024

I always judge a resort by “would I return?”. The answer to Dreams Tulum is a resounding YES. So why only 3 stars, keep reading to find out. I’ll break this review into sections to make it easier to scroll thru. The bad Unlimited Vacation Club, (UVC), which will be know now as (URC), Unlimited Regreats Club. To sum them up, stay away. We have been members for 12 years, and in that 12 years we have been upgraded once. That’s part of their sales pitch. It’s a myth. Now we are not fussy travelers, prior to going to the resort, I reviewed the map and layout of the resort to get a feel for where things were. I sent a simple request to be in a particular building. I was assured that they would do what they could to accommodate. Day one - were given free transportation from Dreams Sapphire to Dreams Tulum, just had to sit thru a membership upgrade meeting. No issue, that seemed fair. We had the pleasure of meeting with Michelle, she was amazing. After about the first hour, we started getting a bit adjitated that it was taking so long. We mentioned that fact that we had been members for a long time, and had yet to see any benefits. She then proceeded to get her manager, we explained the same to him. I told him the only request we had made was to be in a particular building, didn’t ask for the presidential suite or anything crazy like that. Now, this guy had an opportunity to make things right and to start ou trip off on the right foot. He absolutely failed. In fact my wife was in tears after she saw where they placed up. By the way, this was one day after our anniversary where we were married at a Dreams Resort. Day two - I went back to see the manager and explained my frustration. He said he would do what he could to fix this. Second epic fail. Nothing was done. I’m not an expert in scheduling rooms, but by my estimations based on size of the resort, and number of people around, the resort was operating at about 50-60% capacity. Day three (or four) - met with our URC reps Natalia and Annette, bit amazing, caring and understanding people. Explained everything again to them. Long story short, nothing changed. URC summary - we were so fortunate to meet some incredible people on our trip. Some were thinking of joining the Club,we feel blessed to have saved them so much money and heartache, they will not be new members. We had always talked how great a club it was, that will never happen again. I’m sure somehow this will get twisted, and the blame wil lie with us, but these are the facts, you be the judge. The ugly Christmas Eve. A few days before Christmas Eve, staff were busy trying to sell tickets to a buffet. I know what you’re thinking. They wanted $800USD per couple with included a fancy bottle of champagne. We as “member” could receive this for $500USD. Naturally, we were not about to pay that at an “All Inclusive”. So we decided to go to Portafino for dinner that night (keep reading for a review of that restaurant). Here’s where it get ugly, during the sales pitch, or throughout the resort, no where was it mentioned you needed to make reservations at any of the ala-Carte restaurants. So as we went to dinner, we found this out the hard way. The earliest they could get us in that night was 9:00PM. So we went back to the preffered lounge (amazing place) and overheard another couple complaining about the same thing. They were offered a free seat at a table. So my wife inquired about the same thing. After many tears and frustrations, we were offered the same. We did not receive the fancy champagne, and that makes total sense. In my opinion, if I paid $800USD for that night, I would be livid. Don’t get me wrong, the food was amazing. The good As I stated at the start, yes I would return. Why? 3 things. First and most important, the staff. Second, the resort itself, beautiful. Third, the food, it was amazing. We didn’t have a bad meal there. Let’s start bottom up. -The food, we ate at the Portifino, Bordeaux, Himitsu, Seaside Grill, Barefoot cafe, World Cafe, Prefered Lounge for snacks, and we had a romantic dinner that I booked in advance (I did receive an automatic disvount from URC when I booked). As I mentioned, not a bad meal there, and there were some in our group of 8 that were fussy eaters. -The resort. It’s absolutely beautiful. We had it on our list of resorts to visit for almost 10 years. I’m so glad we made it. It’s an older resort, and if you look for faults, you will find them. It’s survived hurricanes and many years of existence. The staff work tirelessly to maintain it and keep it looking amazing. Hats of to them for their hard work. -The staff. I saved the best for last, and this is where I will give praise where it is due, and is the main reason we would return. You won’t find better, caring, and polite staff anywhere, and believe me, we’ve been to a lot of resorts. The three amigos (Edgar, Rene and Javier). They were the highlight of my day and got us off on the right foot. You couldn’t ask for a better trio of friends to wake up to and have breakfast with. It felt like I had known them all my life. Huge thank you for what you do. The pool bar staff (Jesus, Edwin, Carlos, Victor, and I know I a, missing Carlos’s dad and someone else). They always great you with a smile and make some of the most delicious drinks. When the bar isn’t busy, they take the time to engage in conversation with you. Making you feel like you are not just a customer. Thank you for your hard work making some of the best memories we have had. Last but certainly not the least, Erick from the entertainment team. From the moment we arrived, till the moment we left, Erick would engage with every member of our group. Huge thank you Erick for some wonderful memories. If you’ve made it this far, congratulations. This got long winded, but the resort and staff deserve this. So why only 3 stars? If I could give the resort ten stars, I would, but our experience and lack of concern for our simple request from URC dropped the rating. If you are thinking of visiting Dreams Tulum, my advice to you is stay away from URC, perhaps do there little tour where they may offer you some free things, show you some fancy rooms which you will never stay in, and walk away from them. Pro tip - these people work their buts off to provide you with an incredible time, if you can afford, drop them a tip from time to time. If you can’t afford that, everyone can afford to be polite to them. A simple please and thanks go a long way to showing them that you appreciate what they are doing to give you the best experience possible.

Honest review from our stay in Dreams from Dec 14-21 2024

dyanminikol on Dec 26, 2024

Rooms: 5/10 We booked the deluxe ocean view room, view was beautiful. Accommodations were dated and in need of a complete makeover. Several issues arose upon arrival. First, the hallway mirror was not securely mounted to the wall and almost fell off. For safety, we had to remove it and store it in the closet since we were traveling with a young child. The steamer didn’t work, and the AC was leaking, soaking the hallway floor to the point where we had to use two towels to contain the water. Additionally, the outlet cover fell off, showing just how old the fixtures were. We had to call the front desk multiple times to resolve these issues. On a positive note, the room and bathroom were clean. Staff: 7/10 When we first arrived, we were hungry and headed straight to the buffet. We requested a high chair for our little one, but the server immediately said there weren’t any available. We had to ask another staff member, and it took quite some time to get one. At checkout, we had to carry all our luggage to the lobby ourselves because the bellboy was late, and we needed to catch our airport transfer. Our room was far from the lobby, which made this quite inconvenient. UVC staff at the lobby- 3/10trying to sell time share. Insisted in booking presentation to the point that it was annoying. Avoid that place. Just enjoy the beach. On the plus side, the bartenders, waitstaff, and housekeeping were friendly and attentive. Food/Restaurants: 6/10 The buffet had fewer selections compared to other all-inclusive resorts we’ve stayed at, but the food was good (7/10). Restaurants like El Patio, Sea Side Grill, and Portofino were enjoyable (8/10). However, Himitsu was disappointing (1/10) to the point that we had to eat at the buffet afterward. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try Gohan or the teppanyaki options. Beach: 7/10 The first few days, the beach was covered in seaweed, and the water was rough. However, the staff constantly cleaned the beach, and during the last three days, the water was crystal clear and calm—it was incredible. We particularly liked the section of the beach on the right side, where there were no corals, but it had fewer beach chairs and limited shade. As a result, we often had to walk from our centrally located beach chairs to this area. Beach chairs were a challenge to secure since they got occupied quickly. You’ll need to reserve them early, or you won’t find any available. Amenities: 7/10 The resort had two large pools, but the kids’ pool was located far from the main area. The on-site shops, pharmacy, gym, and café were convenient, but the chapel was closed throughout our stay. One night, the common area where the shops are located flooded, and staff had to suction water from the sewer to manage it. Entertainment: 6/10 The entertainment here was underwhelming compared to other resorts we’ve visited. Overall: 6/10 We wouldn’t return to this resort, nor would we recommend it. Despite some positives, our experience fell short of expectations, especially given that this trip cost more than our previous vacation at Riu Cancun, which we enjoyed far more.
