Enjoyable, but Flawed

Daniel F on Nov 22, 2024

Breathless Punta Cana First, I want to start this review by stating that my wife and I went to this resort for our honeymoon – we were there for 10 days. We used credit card points, so we didn’t spend any money on booking the resort. We enjoyed our stay, but if we had paid out of pocket, I think we would have been disappointed. I’ll break down the resort into different sections. One important thing to mention is the Dreams Onyx resort next door. When we were checking in at Breathless, they mentioned that all Breathless guests have access to the Dreams resort. We actually double-checked this with our concierge because it seemed too good to be true. Dreams was the best part of our stay, and it’s a great benefit for Breathless, but the comparison is a double-edged sword due to how it makes Breathless look not as good. We also found that many guests at Breathless didn’t know they could go to Dreams (it was only a one-sentence mention at check-in, after all). Room Obviously, we don’t have a comparison for Dreams here. The room was nice. Housekeeping was wonderful, and it was always spotless every day. The shower and bathroom were great. The bed was comfy, and the minibar was always stocked. We did have an issue when we first arrived: one sink had no hot water, but it was fixed immediately. The TV was very basic, and the internet speed was unbelievably slow. I understand that this is not a priority because they don’t want people to stay in their rooms the whole time, but our first night after traveling all day, we were exhausted. We just wanted to watch Netflix and order room service. All that was available was basic cable TV, with about 60% local Spanish content and a few channels that offered English versions. There was no Chromecast option at all – disappointing because a Hyatt 4-star we stayed at in Florida before traveling had this option. The internet speed was also so slow, making it impossible to stream on phones most of the time. During our stay there were quite a few rainy days (heavy tropical rain from a big storm system), so again these amenities were not great for that situation. The hot tub on the back porch was okay. It’s really just a spa bathtub. It has some jets, but some of the jets were popped out or misaligned, and I had to fix them. The tub also leaked badly when it was full – concierge sent a maintenance person to fix it, but it wasn’t that great afterward. The rooms have very thin walls, so you will hear everything going on in other rooms and in the hall. Loud music goes well into the night, and you will hear screaming drunk guests running through the halls. Sometimes it felt like being back in a college dorm. It’s not in the rooms, but we also wanted to point out that both resorts have lots of outdoor walkways that are frequently slippery when it’s raining. Dreams often had lots of staff cleaning the water away or giant carpet mats down that helped provide traction (and they were Dreams branded too). Breathless had some “Caution: Wet Floor” signs, and that was about it. People were slipping and falling at Breathless. Amenities Pools: Most rooms are next to pools. We were lucky to have a ground-floor room next to a pool. Almost no one was ever out there, so it was nice having a “private” pool away from the loud main pools. • Freestyle Pool: This pool looks awesome on the website but was ruined for us by the incredibly loud music played there all day, every day. I’m talking about music so loud it hurts your ears. It was a comfortable listening level in our room on the other side of the resort. In fact, some of the waiters at Dreams, if they spotted our Breathless towels, would say, “It’s quieter over here, right? Breathless is too loud.” • Main Pool: This pool was nicer, and the vibe was better. There were plenty of seats and a swim-up bar. • Hot Tubs: We were disappointed that the hot tubs around the property are not heated. They are heated only by the sun – which I guess is great in summer, but in fall and on cloudy days, it was disappointing. It was strange because, again, the 4-star Hyatt we stayed at in Florida had heated hot tubs around the property. • Dreams Pools: The Dreams pools were much nicer. Despite the few screaming children you have to deal with, the pools were much quieter, and the music was more enjoyable (radio hits as opposed to the non-stop trap/house music from Breathless). We also noticed that the pools were SIGNIFICANTLY cleaner on the Dreams side. They were constantly cleaned and always immaculate. Compared to Breathless, where we never saw the pools being cleaned – always lots of leaves and bugs – pool decks were green and mildewy, with rusted metal ladders, etc. Dreams pools were also typically warmer, with more variety and bigger spaces. Not to mention, Dreams has a water park complete with a lazy river and water slides. Beach: At both resorts, you’re basically getting the same experience at the beach. The water is great, and the sand is clean. The worst part is the vendors. We knew that vendors on the beach are a thing, but since Breathless advertises a “private beach,” it was a little confusing. The beach is not private. It is controlled by the government and is crawling with vendors. They are obnoxious. Many did not take “No” for an answer. We’re New Yorkers who frequently deal with the tourist vendors in Times Square – this was 100x worse. They whistle at you for attention (my wife did not appreciate that), and you have to say no at least three times for many. We enjoyed the beach, but for us, the vendors really ruined it. Entertainment: The E-Team was great and always had a variety of activities no matter the weather. We did find that often, with shows/music, the app and the daily blast from the concierge were conflicting, and it was hard to know if something was canceled or not. No matter your vibe, there was something for you to do. Casino: This place was not good. The hotel gives you vouchers, so many guests are first-time gamblers there. The vouchers are not well explained and contained several typos. Additionally, the staff there speak almost no English so they were unable to explain. The vouchers are not free money to try; it is simply a match-bet. The staff in the casino were miserable—many guests were pointing out how mean/uninterested they seemed. The casino consistently had first-time gamblers, many of whom had no guidance except from fellow guests. They were low-energy and standoffish. Maybe the hours suck for the staff, but it ruined it for us. We went two nights and then decided not to go back. Food/Restaurants: Buffet: The buffet (named Spoon) offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets. Breakfast was an absolutely insane rush, and they were frequently out of popular items/long lines to wait for things (scrambled eggs, bacon, omelets, etc.). We mostly decided to opt for room service because of this. I can’t imagine how this place functions at a busy time since we were there in the off-season. Lunch/Dinner: It’s fine. The food was good—better than most buffets. One of the weird/annoying things was that you always were taken to your seat by a waiter, but then you immediately left to get food. At Dreams, you enter the buffet and then sit wherever you want. Also, this place should be renamed ‘Fork?’ because you will constantly be looking for silverware. Often you sit down to no silverware, and it takes 10 minutes to flag someone to get you some—which they just take from another table—repeating the process. If your silverware is taken between plates, good luck getting more. Not sure why they don’t just have buckets of silverware with the plates at the buffet. A few other things to note compared to Dreams: the signs for all the food at Breathless were frequently missing, mislabeled, or worn and unreadable, meaning sometimes you didn’t know what things were. Many food items also shared serving ware, meaning contamination could be high. There were also no vegan options (besides salads). Dreams Resort had a larger buffet, immaculate signage, and offered a vegan station. Not sure why vegan food was only for the ‘kids’ resort. We were a bit disappointed, for example, that the only burgers available at Breathless were beef—no turkey or vegan options. Restaurants: Some were great; some were not. The French restaurant was great, and the grill was nice too. The Asian place was so loud because of the hibachi. All the restaurants would also have random dance performers sometimes, which was mostly distracting—especially in the Asian restaurant, as it seemed mildly offensive to have Dominican women dressed up and wearing makeup to look like traditional Japanese dancers. We did not enjoy the Italian place. The food was fine, but the server forgot about us, and it took 20 minutes to order. It was also situated in one of the dining halls of the buffet place, so you’re there enjoying a private ‘fancy’ Italian dinner while John and Susie are in the corner, sloshed and eating buffet food in their swim trunks. We also found that overall, the service in many of the restaurants felt rushed. Perhaps due to trying to get all the guests through, but we were in the quiet season. Often they were asking about dessert options when we hadn’t finished the entrées. It always felt like they were trying to get you out the door. In contrast, at Dreams, our favorite restaurant was their Mediterranean (Greek). We went to a few places there (Mexican was wonderful too), and the service was better, and we felt the food was more consistent there too. The bathrooms were also much more upscale, cleaner, and better stocked (some in Breathless had no paper towels) at Dreams. Room Service: We felt the menu was a little too limited, but the options they had were standard. Overall, the food consistency was not amazing. On our last day, we had an absolutely horrendous breakfast delivered—two broken eggs over stale bread supposedly called Eggs Benedict. The concierges were very good and offered us a free lobster dinner and champagne as an apology, but things like that shouldn’t happen at this kind of resort. Bars/Alcohol: Not much to report here. The bar staff was always fairly fantastic. One waiter, Angel, would even remember our drink order and would come around the pool by our room to see if we were out there and wanted anything. I would say the bartenders probably erred on the side of making the drinks ‘weaker,’ which is probably best from a safety and money situation. Honestly, if you wanted it stronger, you could just ask, and they would oblige. Occasionally, the drinks would have a heavy pour, but overall it was good. They mostly knew every drink you could ask for—I believe we only stumped them once. Service: If you haven’t caught on yet, service at Breathless was mixed. The concierges were fantastic, and you could text them at any hour, and they would be able to help. Generally, the basics were covered easily, but we felt that if you had a more complex problem, the language barrier was an issue. It was also strange to me that you texted the concierges through WhatsApp. Hyatt did have an app (it was overall very good—the map was useful, and it could show you Breathless and Dreams stuff; it also featured all the room service and housekeeping requests), but it was odd that the concierges were not accessible through the app. It’s not a big deal, but from a branding “premium” experience they herald, it does seem odd. Also, I’m not sure what you would do if you did not have WhatsApp. I guess only calling from the room phone? The housekeeping was good and always kept the room tidy. The bar staff were friendly and approachable. Restaurants waiters/hosts were slow and inattentive. One of the big differences we felt at Dreams was that the staff seemed happy. Everything they did, they seemed like they were having fun—laughs, smiles, and the staff seemed to enjoy working together. Even when not working, they were joking with each other and seemed to be having fun. In comparison, we felt the Breathless staff looked miserable most of the time. Even when not working, they didn’t seem to enjoy their coworkers or the resort at all. Maybe it’s a difference of dealing with families versus drunk adults? Maybe they are treated differently by management. But it’s odd when guests can feel the difference between the staff at the resorts. All in all: Breathless offers adults-only privacy, drinking, and partying. But Dreams really was the saving grace for us. It was more our vibe (not an endless party), cleaner, better, and nicer. If Breathless wants to succeed, they need to see what Dreams is doing and learn from it. We enjoyed our honeymoon, but we are so lucky we used points because I would be so disappointed.

Depends on what you are looking for....but not a luxury resort

Larry Y (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) on Nov 21, 2024

Not a 5 star - but the rooms were comfortable and clean, the food was good, the staff was really helpful. The transport to airport was just ok (50 minute ride but transport from airport to hotel took 2.5 hours due to some missing guests that never showed). Check in and check-out went very smoothly - all the staff (food services, maid service, front desk) went out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. Curiously they don't show you to your room - you kind of have to figure out by a general direction pointed to you from the 2nd floor lobby. The beach is beautiful, but we were not able to go into the surf due to severe undertow for 3 of the 7 days we were there. The pools are really busy and quite noisy - and many of the crowd was quite intoxicated from early in the day onwards. Music at both pools all day. The structure of the hotel makes it that there is a lot of echo in the hallways - at 3 am not the best experience you want to wake up to.
