If you're going to Vegas, but you still want to sleep...

MallomarNY (New York) on Apr 19, 2024

As a friend said, "If you want to see Vegas, but you still like to sleep, stay off the Strip." My husband and I actually do like sleep, and The Virgin Hotel on Paradise Road was the most perfect place for us to both experience Vegas and get a great night of rest. Details: the hotel is spotless, gorgeous, decorated in soothing desert colors. Our room was spacious, with a fantastic view of the Strip and part of the endlessly entertaining Sphere. Bed: ahhhhh. Staff: Top-notch, helpful, friendly, get you where you need to go. Most important? We never heard a THING. Like, zero noise. This is the quietest hotel I think we've ever stayed in. We've been at meditation resorts we had to leave because they were too noisy, and this hotel in Vegas? Zen! I adored the Funny Library Cafe, which provided me with much-needed oat milk matchas in the early morning, and there are plenty of shops in the hotel to get whatever you need or forgot. There's a casino, too, but it's a manageable size, not overwhelming, like some of the others. While being off the Strip, the Virgin is close enough to everything to be a short drive or cab away. You're not in the middle of nowhere, just off to the side of the party. The bachelorette and bachelor parties stay on the Strip, and the guests at this hotel are more families, business conferences, and people like us who want to enjoy Vegas and still get sleep. Everything about this hotel is great, and I look forward to staying here again.

Not a safe space for Black Travelers. We are treated like 2nd class citizens.

To say I had an unfortunate and disturbing experience at the Virgin Hotel Las Vegas, would be an understatement. I was in Vegas after seeing the amazing Mariah Carey Residency! It was my last day and after checking out of my Airbnb, I elected to lounge at a hotel using a ResortPass.com Day Pass. I have used Resort Pass several times to kill time before a flight and it's usually a smooth, relaxing process. This hotel was disorganized with an extreme lack of communication and systems in place for Resort Pass patrons. I was told at the check-in desk, that I actually needed to check in at the pool since my day pass was mainly for pool amenities. However, the pass just stated that it was a day pass for the hotel as a whole. I asked the concierge, Adrian, if he was certain but he rushed me off a bit and was a bit dismissive once he saw I had a Resort Pass Day Pass. He stated, “We don’t handle those at the front desk.” It seemed weird to check in at the pool and then walk back to drop off my luggage. But I did as I was told. I followed those directions but there was nowhere to check in at the pool. I walked all over the pool area and one of the maintenance supervisors asked if I needed help. Alex, was soooo gracious and was the MVP of the day! He went above and beyond calling around to figure out where I should check in and helped me carry and drop my luggage off. There was so much confusion just due to the check-in process and it was clear they had no formal procedure in place to handle the day pass “experience”. I was told by one of the other helpful staff that they are still “figuring out the Resort Pass process”. I saw the concierge, Adrian, who gave me the misinformation about “check-in” and he deflected and said I was supposed to go to the upstairs pool. The upstairs pool was closed for the day, so that made zero sense. I actually never actually got checked in. Alex just took a picture of my confirmation and showed it to management. There was no real check-in and I spent over 45 minutes trying to “get checked” and give my bags to the bellhop. After that chaos, I was committed to still enjoying my day. Alex walked me back over to the pool and I overheard two Black women being berated and told they cannot bring in outside food to the pool area. They tried to explain they planned to purchase more food and drinks at the pool bar but the security guard firmly said that was prohibited. It wasn't what he said that was the issue, but it was the belittling tone. One of the women plainly said “Is it because we’re Black???” and he said absolutely not. I asked Alex about the rules on food and he said that you can't have outside food at the pool because they sell food there. But I can eat outside food anywhere else aside from the pool area. I ordered food at the hotel because I didn’t like the menu options offered. I ate behind the bar beside the photo booth because there were no restaurants in that zone. One of the bartenders told me that I couldn’t eat there and that it’s a smoking zone (it’s located next to the casino area). I was so perplexed that you can smoke and bring dogs there, but not eat outside food. He told me I had to sit in the area by the TVs and pointed (which I recorded). I then sat in the area by the TVs and he came up to me saying there’s no eating there either. At this point, I was getting extremely frustrated and said “Which one is it because the bar keeps moving??” He then said I could only eat in the lobby by check-in. I was so angry that I asked to speak to a manager. This was very interesting because while checking my bags in, I heard a Black woman being told she couldn’t check a bag with food in it. But the bellman said he’ll make an exception this time. So we can’t bring in outside food nor eat it around most of the property??? So many arbitrary rules were being demanded of non-Black patrons. The bar manager, Ian, came out about 20 minutes later and I told him I would be recording the conversation because I already planned to report this horrible experience. I walked him through the chaotic chain of events and he was only listening to defensively respond. I think his guards were automatically up because I was recording with the camera pointed towards myself. But he lacked customer service, humility, comprehension, accountability, and racial sensitivity. He kept deflecting the issue to them upholding health code regulations by not permitting outside food. But that’s perfectly logical if it were explained respectfully. I told him that I was hesitant to make this a race issue but after seeing the other incidents where Black women were talked to like second-class citizens, I was noticing a trend. He kept cutting me off and said “I won’t allow you to make this about race! I will walk away and won’t entertain this conversation if you try to make it about that! It has nothing to do with how you look!” I told him now you’re invalidating my experience as a Black woman and further substantiating my notion. At this point, I showed his face in the video so the relevant parties could see this was a White man chastising me about racial inequality and downplaying my experience. I also mentioned that there was no signage designating which areas do not permit outside food and/or allow smoking. He abrasively said “What do you want me to do??? Walk you to the pool?!?” I have never felt more belittled and blatantly disrespectful. I spoke with a couple of employees of color and they empathized with this situation and have witnessed their own experiences with this company. This is why companies need DEI initiatives including sensitivity training with Black and Brown employees hired at ALL levels. Side note, Woody from security was very sympathetic and accommodating as well! He did what he could within his means to help. I also recorded a statement from two other Black guests who experienced racial inequality. No one should have to endure this level of confusion, stress, and disrespect on vacation! This establishment should not be in partnership with Resort Pass if they do not have the infrastructure or respect for day pass visitors. Worst “resort” experience ever. I cried three times due to the marginalization.
