Three star hotel

Elena S (Apple Valley, Minnesota) on May 10, 2024

It was our first time at Grand Palladium Hotel, Grand Palladium Kantenah to be exact. We stayed at other brands like Barcelo, Iberostar and Paradisus. I wanted to try something new this time. I was primarily interested in good swimmable beach. The beach at Grand Palladium is vast. However, the bottom is rocky and there is only a couple of sandy spots where you can actually enter the water. Here is what I found to be different at Grand Palladium from other resorts where I stayed. The food selection at the buffet is scarce and somewhat repetitive day after day. There are only two buffet restaurants on premises. One is located between two hotels (Kantenah and Colonial). The other one is on White Sand territory, which is about 10-minute walk from the first buffet. Every time we go to the closest buffet, there is a line to get in. Therefore, we walked to the furthest buffet, which was never crowded. The other restaurants where you supposedly can have lunch were closed on some days. Out of 8 days that we stayed there, one of them was open only three times and the other at the White Sand hotel side was never opened. The food selection at the Beach grill was the same day after day; hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta in white sauce, pasta in red sauce and if you are lucky watermelon. The bottled water is available only at lobby bar and they are often times out of it. They charge $60 for catamaran lessons ($50 for refresher); at least that is what the person in charge told us. Some of the stuff who directly interact with guests can hardly speak or understand English. The minimum air conditioner temperature in the room is set and centrally controlled. Few times, at night I noticed that the air conditioner was not chilling the room, just ventilating the air. We also had 8-hour power down, during which not only the air conditioner did not work, but also the water was not running. Another thing I noticed is that people who prepare or serve food touch it with their bare hands. Although you are provided with the resort map, the specialty restaurants have no signage to identify them. When we were dining at Italian restaurant, which we had hard time finding, we observed people walking in asking what restaurant it was. Why not to put a sign? The man-made river area at White Sand Hotel part of the resort is smelly. We were offered an upgrade to move to one of those on the river villas. I am glad we did not opt for that. Overall, I got the impression that resort is trying to save money whenever they can. I will not be staying at Grand Palladium again and will not recommend it. There are better options in same price range. P.S. the highlight for me was abondance of wildlife.

Nice beach and pools, average restaurants

anso555 (Lausanne, Switzerland) on May 09, 2024

We spent 12 nights in Gran Palladium Kentenah end of April, beginning of May. We were first given a room in building 42 with windows overlooking the highway and the noise of the traffic that could be heard from the room. We asked for a change and got building 47, quiet and nice. The hotel is a town of 4 different hotels. Kentenah and Colonial are sharing a pool. White sands and TRS on the other side. TRS non accessible to non members. The white sands pool is more calm than the one at Colonial. The secret adult pool is a nice place at night for drinks chilling in the pool. All pools have a lot of seats, no need to book in anytime, same for the beach! The beach is great, just remember to bring water shoes because of rocks. Plenty of space to lay all along, shadow with palapas, Hamacs, sun, a lot of options for beach lovers, really good! To swim in the ocean, 2 spots with less rocks, just look at where the water is the clearest and where people are bathing! Good tips are shared on facebook fans group pages, very useful before visiting! The place is also very convenient to use the colectivos to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum, simply wait for a car outside the hotel entrance, on the right side for Playa and on the other side of the road for Tulum (30-45 pesos per person depending on where you go), take the tunnel. Chedraui supermarket is 10 minutes drive direction Playa del Carmen (ask the collective to stop at Chedraui Puerto Aventuras), the stop for both ways is right in front of the shop! The restaurants were good but not excellent. We are used to go the Secrets Maroma and this was nothing comparable to the quality of the food at Maroma! My husband and I were sick during the whole first week, not sure what it was but obviously something we ate or drank on our first days there. What we preferred were the restaurants with meat (Paisana, ElDorado and Bahia) because it does not involve much preparation of the food, it is simply meat grilled, which is good! Unfortunately, the quality varies and as we came a second time in those restaurants, the meat quality was close to bad... Staff were very good, doing their best all the time, despite that the place looked understaffed (we are hospitality workers and could observe this particularly in restaurants). Surprising fact, apart from the very bad looking beach buffet, there is no option for lunch before 1pm. Sometimes, there is a grill for hotdogs and burgers at the pool, but the times and days of opening are very mysterious. It could be good to have them displayed on the app. Breakfast buffet starts at 7am and is crowded from 8am at kentenah. The best is to go to white sands, where it is nicely occupied, but a bit smaller with less choice. From 8.30 am is gran azul open (only from Fridays to Sundays), with open space seatings over the pool and limited choice, but so much nicer! Tip for restaurants bookings: the reservation plannings open on sunday morning for the week. Do your weekly reservations at that moment. Also, Sumptuori can only be booked with the concierge. I did not get their reservation system because each time we managed to book for the busiest moment (8pm), restaurants were all empty! I think they may save spaces for family selection or TRS guests? It seems they are trying to extend their family selection and trs offer, taking off the advantages from 'classic' reservations. I think it is pretty dangerous to add space and service for those guests paying more when you take those services from other guests because you do not add staff. This kind of strategy is not usable on a long term, unless you want your guests to feel like 3rd class guests... For the restaurants réservations, since we are on holiday, not willing to book a week in advance the time of our dinner, i would prefer a beeper system, first come, first served, you come, go with you beeper and when a table is available, they ring you. So much more efficient! We particularly loved the open spaces in the lobbies, very nice to have a drink. The nightly entertainement is good, the dance shows are nice and we danced a lot at the silent party and the white party! We would have loved to have service at the pools or the beach. There are people taking plastic cups back but nearly no service. If we had one drink served every 2 days at the pool, we considered we were very lucky. The room cleaning was done once a day in the afternoon. Service was not very consistent. Sometimes missing towels, water, shower gel and soap not replaced. It felt like there was no gouvernant to check the service was the same all the time. I had this feeling at check in as well when we had to change room, not the same amount of towels, no ironing board, no solid soaps, to trashcan... as if there is no standard. Apart from that, it was really clean. Thank you to the dedicated hard working team! Rooms are stocked with shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, water, sodas and beers. Cofee machine regular and kettle. Haidrier, iron, safe. Balcony with 2 chairs, a table and a small place to hang your clothes that need to dry. Laundry service is very cheap and efficient in 24 hours max. Bathtubes are also jacuzzis. I would have love a separate shower and toilet. The rooms are pretty small compared to what you can find in Riviera Maya but totally sufficient. It is nice to walk around the resort, lots of shadow paths and lots of animals everywhere, amazing!!! One thing i did not expect was the pool/beach towels: you are given a towel card per person at check in, that you can exchange to a booth close at the swimming pool for a towel. You cannot have more than one towel per person and if you need a change, you can only bring your towel to the booth whick makes it very not convenient when you are at the beach. I understand economy and ecology make this system work but conveniently, an other system could be used. I wish as well that there was gel to clean hands before using the buffet facilities because this could explain why we got so sick as well... I would have loved to have slippers in the room, particularly to walk on cold floor. All my love and thanks to Vanessa at the Reception, Alan at Portofino, Angel & Jesus at Gran Azul, Jorge at la Adelita, Victor at Sumptuori, Juan at ChangThai, Miguel & Santos at El Dorado, Philomena at White Sands Buffet, Federico at Paisana, Eduar at Bahia, Emmanuel at La Hacienda. You guys are doing a hard job and you are doing your best, I really appreciated your kindness and your hard work, thank you!
