Tips and tricks to enjoy a nice vacation
Navigate600950 on Jan 04, 2025
Reviews are all over the place - that seems to reflect misguided expectations. If you go in with the right mindset, flexibility and expectations it’ll be a nice vacation. Beach and pool are nice and well liked by kids. Get there early enough to snag chairs. Resort felt less boozy than the Turks location (not a drink till the wee hours vibe). Small and manageable enough that kids could find their way around solo. Beach is small but so is resort so it’s big enough and it’s private so no vendors walking the beach! Accommodations: The place is old - if you’re looking for luxurious new construction this isn’t the place for you. But it’s clean and comfortable. Plan to shower sometime other than the pre-dinner rush. Everyone showers after beach/pool day and before dinner and hot water can’t keep up. Timing: If you go during peak weeks (holidays etc.) expect things to take longer. If you (or your kids!) can’t handle waiting to be seated for your meal, waiting a while for service, food, etc. then don’t go during peak weeks. Watersports: Only basic watersports on site. Be flexible as the boats break so make sure you have a couple windows of availability. If you can’t do it your first choice time - don’t be disappointed you can still sit at the beach :) You need to go into town for more substantive water watersports (jet ski, parasail, etc). Cash: There are on site street vendors who only take cash. Nobody has Venmo/CashApp. So if you or your kids are the type wanting to buy all the trinkets bring more cash than you expected. Tipping: It says no tipping everywhere on website but people are discreetly doing it at the resort. And it’s expected at every interaction off resort (for tours/excursions etc) so bring more cash than you expected. Food: This is where we saw the most frustration. But there are ways to get good food if you have patience. Buffet: standard cafeteria style. Bring your own hand sanitizer to use after touching the serving utensils that everyone uses for self service (there is none on site). Consider avoiding the kids section- kids self-serve sometimes using their own hands instead of utensils (including fingers in vat of butter). At breakfast you can get fresh made eggs/omlette and fresh smoothie. You can’t get anything fresh made at buffet at any other meals. Non-buffet: Breakfast: the crepe place is good for fresh crepes. It can take a while. Put order in early, ask how long it’ll take and go sit by pool. Lunch: pizza can take a long time. Order at 11:30 when they open or at an off time. Dinner: the restaurants are decent but can’t handle the volume. If you (or your kids!) get impatient or hangry get the 5:30 reservation or go at 5:30 to request walk in spot. That way you’re first before the cascading effects of back-up. If you’re not concierge level you can’t make reservations and sometimes a restaurant will fill up for the entire night with reservations. Be flexible and go somewhere else that night - your first choice will def be available another night. If it’s important to you to eat exactly where/when you want - get concierge level. But even then a 7:30 reservation prob wont be out of the restaurant until 10- you will miss all the evening entertainment. Entertainment: you need to eat early if your kids want to participate or else you’ll be in a restaurant during the program. Some rooms are close to the stage/main area so if you like to go to bed early you may find it too loud for you. If you’re an early bird be sure to talk to them about getting a room farther from the main area. Staff: most staff are super friendly and helpful. I would see some of the same people morning and night, so I imagine they work long days. Brush off the occasional grumpy person - we all have bad days or days we hate our jobs. Many places felt very understaffed during peak week so give them some grace (hostess doubling as busser and waitress during dinner).
Beaches/Sandals Do Better!
Monique C on Jan 04, 2025
December 2024 I was disappointed + disgusted with both the quality of customer service and the actual upkeep of the resort. A paying customer should not have to complain about a stripping toilet seat in their room at a “5-star” resort before it’s addressed. Beaches/Sandals eventually “upgraded” the room on the final day. However, it was done at the convenience of the hotel. It was not a priority, and it took me going back and forth with multiple people to remedy the issue. I will never recommend this hotel to anyone, ever! I ought to receive a full refund for the foolishness I endured at the resort. LONG REVIEW: My stay at Beaches was the worst vacation I’ve experienced, and what made it even more unbearable was the poor and lousy customer service. I checked in at Beaches on Dec 1st and planned to stay through Dec 5th as I was celebrating my birthday. Upon entering Beaches— the exterior of the resort was beautiful. However, when we checked in (celebrating with my best friend), it was immediately apparent that there were ventilation issues as the windows were misty or “sweaty.” Inside the building was a lot “older” than we anticipated (specifically referring to the lobby). We eventually got to the room, and as we expected, the room was a bit outdated in terms of the furniture. This was not an issue at first because the room was clean. Then I noticed that the toilet seat in the bathroom was stripping. So, we leave the room to explore the rest of the property. There wasn't much to see, and the beach was nonexistent. The resort was very underwhelming, especially compared to the other Sandals locations. That evening, we went to the front desk to ask about switching hotels and or visiting another location. I emphasized that I was celebrating my birthday. We were told we would need authorization to go to the other locations. We got authorised to visit Sandals Ochi the next day, which was a Monday, but we didn't get a confirmation for the remainder of the stay (Tue/Wed). Again, we inquired a few times. Note that we also asked about upgrading our rooms while at the Ochi location, they were not helpful. Fast forward, we still didn't get confirmation, so I went to the front desk to inquire. I spoke with a gentleman Monday evening/night (a short and dark-skin Black man) and explained the situation. His response to me was that he’d been off work for a few days and didn't know if a request was put in. I was flabbergasted by his response. I stood there and just stared at him — in disbelief. Your being off from work has nothing to do with me. The appropriate response would have been: let me look into this and get back to you. By the time I got to my room after leaving the front desk, I had received a call notifying me that I was “authorized” to go to Sandals Dunns River for Tue and Wed. Why did it take me following up multiple times and getting visibly angry for people to do their jobs properly? Mind you, this is after dealing with several incidents where we received poor customer service. I mentioned our room with a stripping toilet seat, which Beaches tried to replace, but we opted to change rooms at that point. Our second room was slightly better. It was clean. However, the ventilation was poor as the room was stuffy. The AC did not work properly, and the main lamp was broken. We used our iPhone flashlights. It was horrid! In another incident, I went to get coffee at Breakfast (flies everywhere!), and a female employee attempted to reprimand me for asking her and another co-worker for help. I'll leave that part out. The final nail in the coffin was Beaches informing me the DAY of my birthday (Wed) that we could finally switch hotels. I WAS INCENSED as I had already made plans to leave/check out that day. In closing, you get treated differently based on your physical appearance, particularly if you are a solo traveler. I don't think “Sarah-Beth” would experience this at Beaches. There’s an unconscious bias that exists, and that is why I will only support small mom-and-pop businesses like Jamaican Inn. Overall, I give my time at Beaches 0 out of 10. I do not recommend it.
