Peaceful Royal Plantation
KplusB (Nova Scotia, Canada) on Mar 21, 2025
We just escaped the cold with a week at Sandals Royal Plantation. While we tend to avoid all-inclusives, this one was different. It wasn't noisy, tacky, or crowded. Instead, we found serenity. The proper...ty is small and pretty, with pleasant, shaded porches and a choice of good restaurants. One evening, we swam under the stars while a saxophone played on the patio nearby- our favourite memory! The staff are kind and helpful. Special thanks to manager Omar, who helped us greatly with a lost-luggage snafu; to housekeeper Monique- who would make an outstanding butler! - and to Andre and Johavan, our dapper and charming butlers. In terms of suggestions, we know the property is in the process of updating. Softer lounge chairs, more healthy food and drink choices (ie: more salads, bowls of fresh fruit, and real juices instead of fruit punch), and filtered water stations instead of plastic bottles, would all be excellent updates. It would also be nice if lounge chairs could be reserved by butlers, instead of guests having to throw towels over them at early hours in order to get oceanside seats. Overall, however, we greatly enjoyed our time at this lovely property, and hope to return. We'll never forget those views, that soft air, or the kindness of the staff.
Luxury boutique stay in paradise for our honeymoon and my 30th birthday!
Jelly_500 (London, United Kingdom) on Mar 20, 2025
Where to start? Oh my goodness! We visited Sandals Royal Plantation for our belated honeymoon and my 30th birthday celebrations. We wanted to visit somewhere tropical and beautiful, which also had a luxu...ry vibe without all the hustle and bustle of your typical all inclusive resort... and 100% did the Royal Plantation fit the bill. The situation of the resort is STUNNING and everything is very clean. The hotel itself overlooks a private beach and cove which stretches from one end of the resort (east beach) to the other (west beach). The gardens and grounds around the building are immaculate and we were lucky enough to see the hotel's peacocks strutting their stuff around the resort. The lobby and seating areas are very well furnished, there is also a games room and a 24hr coffee station, an ice cream machine and a popcorn maker. The views from all three of the hotels restaurants are perfection too. We enjoyed having breakfast at the Terrace and taking in the view with a morning smoothie and a mimosa or two... perfect :-) The breakfast a la carte menu is very good, as well as the lunch menu. We also enjoyed Jamaican Night on the Friday. During our stay we also tried out the french restaurant at the hotel and the grill for both lunch and dinner. Both were very good, although we did prefer the beach restaurant for the gorgeous views. Our room was lovely, couldn't fault it. We stayed in 108 on the first floor. Our view of east beach was partially obstructed by the gardens/foliage but to be honest we didn't mind this at all, it meant we could watch the wildlife at sunrise and in the evening we could get a good view of the stars without much light pollution. The room itself was spacious, the mini bar was generously stocked and replenished every day, and we were also given our requested choice of spirits in our room to enjoy. We also ordered room service on one occasion (generally we prefer not to eat in our room, but we did see lots of guests ordering to their rooms throughout the day). We had the devil's food chocolate cake... it was seriously tasty and arrived quickly. We spent most of our days by the pool and a few days on the beach. Couldn't fault our servers at either of these locations the whole time we were there and the drinks were unreal - expect a generous pour of rum, which we liked!! The lady by the pool was so friendly and knew our orders by heart, as well as the guys on the beach who made an effort to chat with us and ask us about how our holiday was going. The water activities offer at the hotel is amazing too. We took part in paddle boarding, a snorkelling boat trip and sea kayaking during our stay. There was also the option of learning to sail and scuba diving if we fancied it, which we didn't on this occasion - but it was nice to have the option. The beaches were immaculately maintained and we often saw staff in the morning and late evening cleaning the loungers and also removing sargassum which had washed up on the beach. The effort by the hotel to conserve local wildlife is also appreciated. There are man made coves/coral coves around the hotel where a lot of the wildlife hang out. We were lucky enough to see puffer fish and rays, as well as the many colourful reef fish. Tip: they were most active in the late afternoon. Again, we found the staff at the water activities shop to be really friendly, approachable and helpful. The crew that took us out on the boat were fantastic and helped lower me into the water because I made them aware of my calf injury. I also had the CBD full body massage in the spa during my stay which was glorious, although a little pricey for 60 minutes. However the staff did go all out and even put a little display in the treatment room for me to wish me a happy birthday. All the staff were very friendly, approachable and kind, and didn't hastle me to buy additional extras etc which was a very nice touch and appreciated. Omar the manager was also great. He greeted us when we arrived and was also very present around the hotel most of the time. It was so nice to see a manager so involved and proud of their hotel, and he took the time to check in with us to ensure everything was going well. We've never stayed at a hotel where the management have been so welcoming and attentive. It definitely made our stay that extra bit special because our custom felt valued and personal/boutique, rather than the mass produced approach of a lot of bigger all inclusive hotels we've stayed at over the years. There were a few downsides/niggles to our trip though which I did feel needed mentioning so that the hotel can improve: Butler service. We've never had a butler on holiday before, so were unsure of what to expect. Both of our butlers were generally good but we did feel that some of our preferences that we'd listed on our booking form were overlooked a bit with regards to special touches for my 30th birthday and also some of our food/drink preferences. For example, we'd red the reviews of Royal Plantation that visitors celebrating their birthdays had received a slice of birthday cake in the room. We did request this but it didn't materialise. We also noticed that other guests around the hotel celebrating did seem to be getting extra attention including staff singing to them etc, whereas my birthday was more of a low key affair... which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I did feel a bit left out. Overall we found Neil to be more efficient/quicker at responding to our requests than Chaise, but both butlers were very friendly and welcoming, and chatted to us regularly throughout our stay. There was some miscommunication on one of the nights when we booked La Gourmand at the Sandals resort next door, Chaise was meant to accompany us but the shuttle arrived before he did so we ended up going over to the other resort without him. It wasn't really an issue because we were able to find the restaurant and get to our table - but maybe something to keep in mind for next time. We were also served lunch by our loungers on a few occasions, but we didn't really get a choice in selecting our options - so ended up having the same thing, Lobster Thermidor, twice. I think this is because we'd mentioned it on our preferences. I think we'd also mentioned wanting to try Jamaican food too and noticed other guests were getting Jerk food from the Jerk Shack at the other resort delivered to them. In fairness we could have asked for this but we weren't sure of the etiquette when it comes to having a butler especially since they had chosen our lunch for us - I would have been mortified by sending anything back, so we ate it anyway. Sunloungers "at dawn". Oh my god, this was actually annoying. Again, not directly the fault of management but this seriously needs to be monitored. The resort is small, it only has 74 rooms, and there are signs on both beaches and by the pool which state than any reserved loungers will be cleared by 8am or within 2 hours of not being used so that all guests have a fair chance at enjoying the facilities. We found that this wasn't imposed at all. Due to jet lag, we were up very early most mornings and saw the same guests each morning at around 6am reserving spots on the beach from our room. When we popped down to the 24 hr coffee machine by the pool, before breakfast had even opened, we saw loungers by the pool being reserved by guests. This really wasn't OK. We also saw some guests reserving spots on the beach AND by the pool, which is just plain greedy. Who is reserving a sunlounger at 6am, seriously? Feels completely out of touch with the luxury vibe. Boo!!! 100% peak EasyJet holiday in Benidorm behaviour from other guests. It did add stress to our stay as whenever we got up slightly later, we struggled to find somewhere to relax. The only spots that were left were in very strong direct sun and we didn't want to get burned. We spoke to other guests who also felt disappointed and irritated by the easyjet sunlounger culture. Management, please do something about it. Dunns River Excursion. We got ripped off on this one, although this is more a complaint about Island Routes (outsourced tour provider) than the management at royal plantation. We paid the equivalent of around £170 for a 3 hour trip at the Dunns River Falls. We love excursions when we go on holiday and don't mind paying a bit extra for a quality excursion, but what we got was really poor, a total rip off and a very miserable experience. We were sold an excursion by the resort to the Dunns River Falls which included a transfer, entry to the park and a guided tour of the falls. Except when we got there, we were dropped off at the gate by our driver (from Island Routes) and told to be back at 12:30, which meant we only got around 2 hours as opposed to 3. We then waited around with another couple from our resort by the gate, expecting a tour guide to approach us. After about 10 minutes of waiting in the hot sun, we couldn't hold on much longer, so we went off together to find the toilets and changing room facilities. On the way to the toilets, we were approached by a guy selling carvings who started to chat to us about the falls, so we presumed he worked for the operating company. He then "gifted" us two small carvings, before carving our names into them and then demanding we pay him $120. We told him we didn't have that sort of money on us, which we didn't. He then asked us to give him whatever we had. We found this to be very aggressive and uncomfortable, and ended up giving him $40, which was pretty much nearly all of our spending money. We then regrouped with the other couple from Royal Plantation, after spending about 30 minutes as a group trying to find the toilets and then figure out how to book a locker - again, more time on the falls lost. Eventually we were guided down to the falls by someone who claimed to work there, and he took some photos of us. Then we realised he didn't work there because he kept demanding a tip and became quite aggressive. We managed to get away from him by going on the falls, but the falls were very slippery and dangerous - as you'd expect for a waterfall! - and we had been promised a hike up the falls but had no idea how to do so. Fortunately some of the genuine park staff were on hand and helped us up some of the way, as well as taking some photos for us and chatting about our visit. We wanted to tip them but they were gone by the time we actually climbed the falls and we had to head back. Whilst on the falls we saw other groups climbing up with a guide, so we were definitely cheated out of a proper excursion... once back at the lockers we were then chased by the guy (and his friends) who originally pestered us for a tip. We refused to pay and they shouted abuse at us, which was rude and intimidating, and made a bad experience worse. All of this was frustrating because the falls themselves were beautiful. We'd also been informed of a family bereavement the day before, so the falls was a chance to cheer ourselves up, and instead it made us feel stressed and angry. We reported the issues to Neil and I must say, he was excellent. He escalated the complaint for us and ensured that management knew about everything that had happened. Omar approached us at dinner and discretely caught up with us about the trip, which we appreciated. The next day, we were offered a 30% refund from Island Routes, which was better than nothing at all - however, Omar made sure it was put right and gifted us a credit which we could use in the shop/against our bill for the room. We were very grateful for this gesture as it meant we were not completely ripped off. Thank you Omar. Last point as this is very long... signposting! A cocktail menu and some dining menus at the pool/on the beach wouldn't go amiss. The bars and restaurants are so good at Royal Plantation and there is so much on offer, but you don't necessarily know about it all unless you speak to other guests. It took me 3 days to figure out there was a glorious rum and banana cocktail on offer! And even longer to discover that the Grill provided patties at lunchtime. There are also a lot of dining choices at the other resort but again don't necessarily know about them until you are tipped off by other guests. So better signposting all round would help guests to enjoy everything on offer - because there is a lot, and it's all so delicious! Coconut water. Why was coconut water only available on Jamaican night??? I found this a little strange. The coconut water was delicious. Can't beat it fresh out of a coconut when on holiday in a hot climate. I've had coconut water on my holidays in Greece, which isn't famous for coconuts... but I couldn't get it daily on a resort surrounded by coconut trees!? Overall a beautiful, luxurious stay in paradise. Thank you Sandals Royal Plantation :-)
