Not a 4/5 star resort!

This is 100% honesty, and factual. Buyer beware. The recent reviews are either fabricated, or the reviewers were hammered on Imperial beer. Conveniently, you can't leave a review on the Barcelo Occidental ...Tamarindo website. 3 couples booked this location in January for a May trip. The price was right. $1,400 for a couple for a week. Seemed to good to be true, and after reading extensive reviews, we became concerned. We upgraded to the Premium package ($100 per day) which was supposed to allow us early and expedited check-in, dinner every 2 days at their Italian or Japanese restaurants, and access to their Premium liquors (my wife wanted this upgrade to get Malibu). This brought my total to $2,100. Still a deal. 1) Check in is a free for all. 3 lines, but only 1 for actual check-in. Very confusing. 2) My printed receipt from the booking states my Premium gets me dinner at the restaurants once every 2 days (attached photo), but we were told only every 3 days, and they weren't budging. 3) Malibu was available for the 1st 2 days, then was mysteriously absent the remainder of our stay. Resort - Beautiful. Close to town (we rented a 6 person golf cart for the week). NO AC anywhere but your room, and it is hotter than h@ll with 90+ degrees, and 80% humidity. 1 pool, and it's not refreshing, as it's 90 degrees. Beach - Rocky. No sand to speak of unless you cross the small river. We did that, but you have to cross back before the tide rises, or your stuck. Food - 1 buffet onsite. Breakfast was good. Lunch was good. Dinner was sub par. They have a "snack bar" at the pool bar, but it's a very limited selection of poor quality, and fly infested. We did eat at their Japanese steakhouse, and it was horrible. The lady cooking hated her job, and our steaks were shoe leather. We also had the Italian restaurant, and it decent. Entertainment - every night at 9pm in the amphitheater. Hokey, but ok. Picture cruise ship show with local talent. Bars - there are 2. A pool bar that does not serve any Premium liquor. It opens at 10am, and they are strict. No mimosas, bloody mary's, or beers in the morning before 10. There is also a lobby bar that opens at 12pm. Premium choices are here. Please note they track the number of Premium drinks you order, and will stop you at 10 per person per day. Unheard of at an all inclusive, especially when you consider Jack Daniels a Premium drink. Rooms - they were nice. Ours was spacious, and had very cold AC. Please note that building 4 where we stayed, backs up to the amphitheater and is very loud from 9pm to 10pm. Special thanks to our 2 favorite bartenders Alan and Cristobal. They made our trip fun, and took great care of us. Overall? 4 out of 10. Don't be fooled, as this isn't the 4 or 5 star resort implied on their site. For $1,400 you get what you pay for. Ditch the 10 drink BS, put some cold water in the pool, and upgrade your snack bar, and you've easily fixed some glaring issues.
