Underwhelming

Daniel L on Nov 21, 2024

Great pools, beautiful grounds. Room was great. No easy access to beach. Frustrating. Apparently there is a shuttle. On site cafe was pretty bad. Workers generally ambivalent, probably sick of tourists was our thought. Lady who advised our activities was great and spot on. Lot of money for just an ok experience. You win some you lose some. Move on.

Beautiful Pool, But Staff, Food and Beds and Service Leave Much to Be Desired

derekseal (Gilbert, Arizona) on Nov 21, 2024

Having visited numerous four- and five-star resorts across Hawaii’s islands over the past decade and a top Titanium Elite, I came to Koloa Landing with high expectations, especially given its accolade as USA Today’s “Best Hotel Pool in America.” Unfortunately, the experience fell significantly short, making it one of the worst service experiences I’ve had. Our expectations were far from met, and we won’t be returning. The most frustrating moment was being reprimanded for slightly moving pool umbrellas —just about three feet—to create shade. While we were told we can move our chairs and not the umbrellas there was no signage or notice. At every other resort I’ve been to, it’s standard to adjust umbrellas as needed. If the resort doesn’t want them moved, they should install fixed bases instead of ones with wheels, which naturally invite repositioning or at minimum just drill sieves into the pool deck for umbrellas that can’t move. Additionally, the food at Holoholo Grill was very disappointing for the cost. Our coconut shrimp was overcooked, the chicken had very little meat and the next morning the pancakes were overly cooked like a dark piece of toast and when we showed a hair in the food - the server dismissed it as being part of eggs which it was clearly not. Even a reasonable request to leave pepperoni off half of the flatbread turned into an unnecessarily complicated experience, with the service staff being unaccommodating throughout the process at the market place. The beds are not good (just like other reviews) and there are several maintenance issues we experienced in our suite with doors sticking and not closing properly. While the resort’s grounds are undeniably beautiful, with well-maintained amenities and stunning views, the service, food, and staff fell far below the standards such a property advertises. Guests spending $1,000–$2,000 a day expect more than dismissive attitudes and poor service. Koloa Landing may have an award-winning pool, but it has a long way to go in remembering the fundamentals of hospitality.
