The Westgate e42nd NYC

notgwerd (North Bay, Ontario) on Oct 29, 2024

I don't know how I came across the Westgate while looking for a place to stay in NYC. But I did, and is it amazing. Renovated in the past couple of years the place is spotless, great friendly staff, a very relaxed vibe. We took a King room with a terrace...In NYC! Sat out and watch the full moon rise over the east river. The key thing, it turned out for us, was location. Located basically at 2nd Ave and E42nd (closest hotel to the United Nations - makes for an eclectic parade through the lobby at all hours). The room was great, comfortable, and frankly painted the nicest shade of white I've ever seen. But - just down 2nd is a really great liquor store, and a block further on is a really nice grocery store - things are expensive everywhere but having these that close make a difference. Up 2nd (Beside the Dunkin' Donuts) is a wonderful place called "Tudor Bagel". Across 2nd is Patsys Pizzeria - we went for diner twice (most plates are "shareable") And... just around the conner and up e41st is the Tudor City Cafe, Yassine Cuisine, and The Tudor City Steak House - if you want something a little higher end. But you can get something affordable (and shareable) from the other two places. There is a spot to sit and watch the East River, and this really amazing place called "Tudor City Greens". A lovely park to sit and snack in peace. (Between Fire Engine Sirens of course...). Jane Jacobs would have loved it. It is an easy walk to Grand Central Station, or just up 42nd to the Green Line. Also a fairly easy walk down to the Ferry Terminal. One final bit ... we flew into Laguardia (OMG) This ain't your grandpappys Laguardia. Took a cab to the Hotel and back - cost about $50 each way...but we were early afternoon and traffic wasn't bad. Forget taking a cab anywhere during rush hour. Finally the in-room coffee is okay. Starbucks in the Lobby at the Lobby Bar - great little gem as well. All we can say is it is a great place to stay. If we get back to NYC - we won't have to think about where to stay.

Nice, but pricey

ej8903 (Kingwood, Texas) on Oct 21, 2024

The hotel is nice and rooms ave very good. The location is not bad if you don’t mind taking the subway to everything, as there is very little in terms of attractions near the hotel. My biggest complaint is that there is a ridiculous RESORT fee. This is not a resort. I asked what does this get me, and they said the resort fee covers your in room coffee and WiFi. This is $35/ night for keurig and bad WiFi. When you add this nightly fee, you can find better closer to more attractions. The fee should be factored into their nightly rate, as it is mandatory
