Honest review of this hotel

We stayed at this hotel over Christmas, and I want to share an honest review. In my opinion, the experience has been overly hyped by loyal past guests in the Facebook group, where negative feedback is often met with harsh criticism. The Positives: The beach was absolutely stunning and undoubtedly the highlight of our stay. It’s beautifully maintained, picturesque, and provided a relaxing escape. We also loved seeing the animals roaming the grounds daily, which added a charming and unique touch to the resort. The Privilege Package: We upgraded to the Privilege package for access to the BLoved restaurant, but in hindsight, it wasn’t worth the extra cost. The main benefit seemed to be the view, which can partially be enjoyed at the buffet restaurant without paying extra. If the view isn’t a priority, you can save money by skipping this upgrade. It was also disappointing that the best tables with the most stunning views at BLoved were reserved for Exclusive members, leaving us feeling underwhelmed. Dining Experience: Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet our expectations. The buffet offers a wide variety of options, but much of it was lukewarm or cold, particularly the meat, which was concerning. We had to send several dishes back in different restaurants for this reason. A family member also experienced an upset stomach for several days after dining at the buffet on Christmas Eve. During our stay, we dined at BLoved, The Grill, and the buffet. We were advised by other guests to avoid the Italian restaurant due to poor reviews, and the pizza and pasta options at the buffet really didn’t taste great, which made us hesitant to try it. As we’re not sushi lovers, we naturally avoided the Asian restaurant as well. Overall, the food quality was disappointing, though this could come down to personal preference. The Rooms: The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable, but we did encounter a few issues. A strong sewage smell came from the shower drain and was noticeable even from the bed. Additionally, the balcony seal was loose, and although the cleaner would push it back into place daily, it felt like a recurring problem. The ironing board provided was extremely small, which made ironing clothes a frustrating experience. The Hotel Overall: The resort could benefit from some updates. Many areas felt outdated, with old decor and some peculiar layouts. For example, the grill restaurant is located in a large, echoey hall, which created an odd and uninviting dining atmosphere. Final Thoughts: While the hotel has its strengths—most notably the stunning beach and comfortable rooms—it fell short of the glowing reviews we had seen on the Facebook group. We came in with high expectations and were disappointed in several areas, especially the food and some aspects of the accommodations. That said, we still had a great time, especially enjoying the beautiful beach, which made the trip worthwhile.
A week before the holidays at Catalonia Royal Tulum

The resort was beautiful, one of the best I have ever stayed at. We booked through Sunwing, which was a major dissapointment, but the overall stay at the resort was perfect. The resort is about an hour away from the airport, which can make for a long travel day, but worth the drive. The layout of the resort it perfect. It separates the a la carte restaurants from the buildings with the rooms, which separates the buffet/pool/beach. The rooms face a small jungle, which allows for the Coatis to come by your balcony. The walk from your room to the lobby or beach goes through this jungle, allowing you to see the Coatis up close, as well as iguana's and paca's (all adorable). Lobby has a good drink bar/coffee bar, as well as a gift shop. Pool is surrounded by the buffet and the ocean making it easy to pack for the day, and stay put if wanted. The room was large, large shower with great water pressure and good temperature. Lots of pillows and extra blankets if neede. A/C worked well. Nice size balcony which was nice to relax on. Staff was great and helpful, only getting one who kind of brushed us off when asking for information about our transport (again, mainly a Sunwing issue...). Booking the a la carte restaurants were super easy through their site, which was easily usable with their free Wifi, which worked great and without password needed. You have five restaurants to choose from (favorites being Mamma Mia, Tao Cat and Rauxa). The Grill was okay, and we did not try the Adelita. Buffet was always well stocked and had more then enough options (overheard people complaining about lack of options so I guess it just depends on taste). Every supper is an a la carte, with the exception of Saturday which is the Mexican buffet, as well as some of the a la cartes still being available. The beach was perfect! No resorts sharing the beach right next to Catalonia Royal Tulum on either side. Beach was kept clean, staff bringing drinks were always available, juice bar right on the beach. No seaweed, no rocks in the swimming area, watersport activities easily accessible. We never had to fight for chairs, however towards the end of our stay we started to notice the typical ignorant people reserving chairs on the beach without showing up for most of the day. Nightlife was minimal, but in a good way. Always had something, but we did not attend often. To be noted : we booked an excursion through Amstar (Sunwing not having a representative at the resort all week). It was Tulum & Yalku Excursion: Guided Tour, Cenote, Snorkel, and Lunch at 169$ USD. This was a big dissapointment, and would not recommend. I will leave a review on their page, but long story short, 8 hour day, less then 2 hours spent doing the actual excursion. This was easily my favorite in terms of layout, looks, comfort, food, etc. Would recommend highly.
