A Late Arrival Flight + Long Drive Home Next Day = Worth Every Penny

Marie_World_Travels (Ontario's Near North, Canada) on Jan 04, 2025

The Room Immaculate and well-kept, with a comfortable king-sized bed that dominated the space. While the bed was incredibly comfortable, its size made the room feel smaller than it actually was. Room Location I’ve stayed at the Sheraton Gateway before, and in the past, I was given rooms closer to the front desk with fantastic views of the airport runway (I find watching planes take off and land to be utterly mesmerizing). However, this time, my room was located way at the far end of the hotel. In fact, the walk from the airport to the hotel felt shorter than the trek from the front desk to my room! To be clear, this isn’t a complaint—I needed to stretch my legs after a long overseas flight. It was simply surprising to realize how vast the hotel really is. Silence in the Chaos Despite being right next to one of the busiest airports in Canada, the hotel is incredibly soundproof. You’d never guess you were steps away from the hustle and bustle of Pearson Airport. Value and Recommendation At $431.60 for one night (before taxes), staying at the Sheraton Gateway is not exactly light on the wallet. As a frugal traveler, I always experience a moment of hesitation (and perhaps mild self-loathing) when booking. My brain screams, “There are more affordable airport hotels!” But every single time I can afford it, I hit the Book Now button anyway. Why? Location, location, location. After a long overseas journey, the last thing I want is to deal with another vehicle—whether it’s a shuttle, a taxi, or even Aladdin’s flying carpet. Walking out of the airport and straight into the hotel is sheer bliss. Every time I approach those automatic doors, I imagine the faint sound of a choir of angels softly singing, “Aaaah aaaah aaaah,” as they open. No shuttle buses in inclement Toronto weather. No waiting outside Arrivals wondering if I missed my ride. Just the simple, glorious “Heel Toe Express” to a warm, welcoming bed. Traveller Background My husband and I are seasoned travelers. He’s retired from the Canadian Forces, and I’m a retired travel consultant who now does business consulting and dabbles in pro bono travel advising. Over the years, we’ve stayed in hotels - everything from budget-friendly gems to opulent five-star hotels—and even the occasional dive. While we’re generally frugal travelers, we believe in paying for convenience when it truly matters. For late-night arrivals at Pearson Airport, nothing beats the Sheraton Gateway. I've already booked another stay for mid January 2025 - and I'll review my stay then as well. Final Thoughts The Sheraton Gateway delivers exactly what I need after a long, multi-leg overseas journey. It’s clean, comfortable, and blissfully close to the airport. Despite the high price tag, I’d still recommend it to anyone seeking convenience and comfort after a long trip. If you can stretch your budget, it’s absolutely worth it.
