First and last trip to Cuba

NorthStar21020659098 (Pickering, Canada) on Mar 22, 2025

This was my first and last trip to Cuba. I wanted to leave and cut the trip short after a few days but that was not possible. So, here is the good and the bad. I realize I'm being picky, but the responsibi...lity of fixing most of this stuff is not on the Cubans to fix. They have such limited resources that they are doing the best they can. But Sirenis is a chain of hotels owned, I believe, by a family in Spain. It's their responsibility to provide the tools to the Cubans to maintain their property and they certainly are not doing that. Pros: the beach is beautiful and you can walk for miles - you can rent a paddle boat (although only one works, the others are broken) and spent half an hour paddling around the bay area in front which was nice. They will also take you out in a catamaran if you like (not sure if there is cost for that) - bring your own snorkel and head over beside the jutting rock formation and you'll see lots of fish - the beds were comfortable - even on March break, they were nowhere near capacity so there was never any trouble with finding chairs (although somehow they ran out of towels which means they don't have that many to start with) - the evening shows were good - the Cubans are lovely people and try their best - the lobby and bars are nice, the pools are nice - the shower head has good pressure and we always had hot water - there are lots of cats living on the property that hang out outside the buffet area. I love animals so it was fun to have them there as there is limited other wildlife. There are pelicans that spend time on the beach as well. Cons: Rooms/hotel: - the rooms are not only outdated, but actually ugly. We staying in the Cayo wing (Sunwing) and even though there were only 2 of us, they put us in a room with 3 beds all crammed in together. The bedding other than the sheets is this old brown cover that serves little purpose. If you needs more blankets, there were old, stained wool blankets in the closet. - the TV remote didn't work properly, the volume would only go up, not down - half of the lamps didn't work, the lighting in the bathroom is quite dim - the sliding door had a make-shift lock. The front door lock only worked if you really slammed the door shut. - the walls/ tiles/etc all need repair - the bathroom has black mold - the landscaping around the hotel is "meh". What grows naturally looks lovely, but the could certainly do more just by planting some flowers. Even though it's their winter, it's still hot so I'm not sure why flowers can't be planted. It would just add to the natural beauty. - the entire country lost power during our stay. The back up generators came on after a while so at least we had lights but the A/C didn't work quite the same so for 2 days everything in our room was damp/wet. - it gets cooler at night than you might expect, so pack some light long sleeves/pants - the "Kids club" area is not open/not used - some versions of the maps are not updated. Ie there is no ice cream parlour, there is no gift shop (there are vendors that sell their hand made stuff - that is not the same as a gift shop. If you need to buy something that you forgot, you will have to go into Varadero, or maybe go to another hotel? ) Food and drinks: - repetitive - basically the same thing every day, every meal - they use a lot of salt in their food - if you are vegetarian, you will inevitably still eat some sort of meat. The food is not labeled and things that look meatless might not be. Anyone with food allergies is in trouble! - I am thankful my kids did not come along because they would have had nothing to eat. Don't bring picky eater kids here! They can make french fries and there were usually plain pasta. - Food handling/hygiene is lacking. No one is sanitizing their hands, cross contamination is everywhere. They don't have enough tongs for each dish always, so the tongs may touch various dishes (ie if you have any allergies, you are in trouble) - they often run out of dishes (ie coffee might be served in a bowl) - they seem to have a shortage of napkins - you are lucky if you get half of a napkin - The plastic drink cups are reused (it is not clear how well they are washed before reusing, I heard they are just rinsed and then used for the next person) - they use the same spoon to mix the drinks for everyone - so for example I brought my own cup. I had a drink in it and then asked for another. The same ice from my previous drink was used for the next drink and then the spoon that stirred my drink went back into a cup of water for the next person. (ie my saliva/germs is now in everyone else's drink) - they did not have limes when I was there. You don't realize how many drinks require lime until you don't have any. They couldn't make mojitos properly as a result. The pina coladas were missing something so they put red syrup liqueur in it. Tequila Sunrise was ok, but sooo very sweet (as were all of the drinks I tried and eventually couldn't handle anymore because they were mostly liquid sugar). Since they didn't have anything standard I liked, I asked the bartender for suggestions but was just told "I can make anything". The booze must have been watered down. I drank so much tequila that I should have felt something. I was sober all week, same with my partner even with drinking the beer. (for context, when we went into Havana and Varadero, they were able to make proper drinks and they were delicious) - the 2nd buffet was never open (likely due to low capacity) but at lunch they had this small BBQ going outside of it. - we didn't try the a la cartes because you have to be outside of the main buffet before 9 am each day to book one (ie can't book in advance). I don't know why they do it this way because the a la cartes were more than half empty whenever we walked by. Outside of the hotel: - if you go into Varadero - be sure to go down towards the end of the strip and find Rigo's Pizza. OMG. The best pizza I have ever had anywhere. And cheap. - In Havana: there are people begging and hustling at every turn and it wasn't really comfortable for us walking around being hassled so much. There are little kids begging in the street so be prepared for this. - try a ride in a classic car. The drivers have a wealth of knowledge to share. - the bus to Varadero is packed full and our bus broke down after about 5 minutes. We all had to get off and wait for another bus to come along. No big deal, but be prepared to stand on the bus as it was always full. Overall, I would never return to Cuba unless the economic situation there completely changed and the people had what they needed to not just survive, but actually thrive. Tourism is their biggest industry and even it is failing now. The government needs to change and think of it's people's best interest and not it's own ego. (in my opinion).

Resort was not over packed at all. Staff and service were excellent. Every staff member was very nice. Always found something delicious to eat. Snack bar was very good. The view of the ocean is beautiful a...nd the ocean had many seats available.
