WestJet fosters meaningful dialogue and awareness through powerful screenings and partnerships, acknowledging the painful legacy of residential schools in advance of September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In support of WestJet’s commitment to Call to Action #92 of the Truth and Reconciliation mandate, the airline leveraged the power of community internally, bringing WestJetters together in advance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, to raise awareness for the legacy and lasting impact of residential schools, taking space for reflection and encouraging meaningful discussion on truth and reconciliation.

Return to the Falls

On Monday, September 23, Elder Betty Ross and director, Eppo Eerkes, visited WestJet’s Calgary campus to share a special screening of Return to the Falls. The powerful documentary shares Elder Ross’ experiences at St. Joseph’s residential school and her teachings on truth and reconciliation. The mission of Elder Ross and Director Eerkes is to integrate this vital narrative into Canada’s education system, providing a medium of truth for youth nationwide and serving as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced and the resilience demonstrated by Indigenous communities.

Over 80 WestJetters attended the screening in person, while more than 120 participated virtually. Prior to the screening, WestJetters and Elder Betty Ross shared personal stories reflecting the deep impact of residential school systems. Through Eppo’s powerful storytelling, Elder Betty’s vulnerability and commitment to education and truth telling is inspiring.

Orange Shirt Society

Founded in 2015 by Phyllis Webstad, the Orange Shirt Society aims to raise awareness of the lasting impacts of residential schools. With Every Child Matters as its foundational principle, Orange Shirt Society has sparked global conversations around truth and reconciliation. In support of Webstad's mission, WestJet collaborated with her to further promote awareness of Orange Shirt Day and the intergenerational effects of the residential school system on individuals, families, and communities.

To commemorate Orange Shirt Day, throughout the month of September, the WestJet Store is selling Every Child Matters shirts and pins, created in partnership with Imprints & More, an Indigenous women owned business. All proceeds generated will be donated to Orange Shirt Day Society.
