Baggage allowance

You are allowed to check 2 to 4 bags on a WestJet flight, except with WestJet Encore, where you are allowed 2 to 3 bags. The number of bags allowed over 2, and baggage fees required, depend on your fare bundle and WestJet Rewards tier benefits.

To travel with more than the standard number of bags allowed, you can ship additional luggage through WestJet Cargo.

Prepay for bags and save. For the lowest price on up to 2 checked bags, guests are encouraged to prepay for their first and second checked bags online through Manage Trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight as fees will increase through self-serve check-in, and at the airport with an agent.  

Checked baggage fees can vary based on when they are paid (during booking, through Manage Trips, or at check-in), date of purchase, fare purchased, origin airport, destination airport, duration of flight, promotional offer, day of departure, or day of return. 

Certain checked baggage fees may only be offered on WestJet managed digital self-serve tools (during booking, through manage trips or self-serve check-in) and will not be available through the WestJet Contact Centre or other channels.

Are you travelling with one of our airline partners? The policies of the other carrier may apply, so we encourage you to familiarize yourself with these prior to travel.

Fees are combinable where applicable. For example: if a bag is overweight, oversized and is a second bag, then all 3 fees apply.

Bag fees are charged in Canadian (CAD) or U.S. (USD) dollars, depending on the booking’s country of origin. For flights departing from outside Canada and the U.S., bag fees will be converted and charged in the local currency of the departure country. GST is charged on fees for all itineraries that originate in Canada.

When is my baggage fee included?

First bag fees are included for EconoFlex, Premium and Business fares and Silver, Gold and Platinum WestJet Rewards members. First bag fees are also included for Econo and Member Exclusive fares to and from Asia. 

Second bag fees are included for Premium and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members

Excess bags are included for Platinum Rewards members.

The size of checked baggage must be within 157 total cm (62 total in.) and not weighing more than 23 kg (50 lb.).

Oversized luggage exceeds 157 cm (62 in.) in total combined dimension (length + width + height), but less than 203 cm (80 in.).

Overweight luggage exceeds 23 kg (51 lb.), but no more than 45 kg (100 lb.).

For flights to and from Europe, overweight luggage exceeds 23kg (51 lb.), but no more than 32 kg (70 lb.)

Baggage exceeding the accepted number, weight or dimensions must be shipped through WestJet Cargo.

Travelling with a child under 2

When you travel with a child on your lap, you can check 2 pieces of infant equipment (car seat, playpen or stroller), in addition to your checked baggage allowance, free of charge.

Travelling with a child over 2

For a child or infant travelling in a paid seat, you can check one piece of child/infant equipment (car seat, playpen or stroller), in addition to their checked baggage allowance, free of charge.

Priority baggage means your bags will be tagged so they are among the first to the arrival carousel.​

Eligible guests include​

• Platinum and Gold members and their travel companions on the same reservation
• Guests seated in Business or Premium​

PLEASE NOTE: If using a self-serve bag drop station, please be sure to see a WestJet agent to have a yellow priority indicator tag added to your baggage tag(s) prior to drop off.​

Prepaid checked baggage fees are refundable in the event of a flight cancellation. 

• Prepaid checked bags can only be added on WestJet operated flights. 
• Prepaid checked baggage fees can be paid online for first and second bags only. If first and second bags are already included for as part of the fare bundle selected, or as part of  WestJet  Rewards member benefits, additional bags can only be added at the airport.

Baggage fees change within 24 hours of your flight. First and second bag fees will increase within 24 hours of departure during check-in, including check-in at the airport. For the lowest price on up to 2 checked bags, guests are encouraged to prepay for their first and second bags, you can do so here.  

Flights with prepaid checked bags can be cancelled online and bag fees will be refunded except when an UltraBasic fare has been purchased, which is a 100% non-refundable fare with no change options allowed.
