  • The total dimensions (length + width + height) of checked baggage must not add up to more than 157 total centimeters or 62 inches and cannot weigh more than 23 kilograms or 50 pounds
  • Guests are allowed to check up to 4 bags. Please note: WestJet Encore baggage limit is only 3 bags. For flights to Kingston, Jamaica, the limit is 2 checked bags.
  • Any checked bag exceeding the size or weight allowance is subject to all applicable oversized weight and size restrictions and fees.
  • If you're travelling with overweight or oversized baggage, we recommend that you arrive 30 minutes prior to the recommended check-in times to allow time for screening.
  • To travel with more than the standard number of bags allowed, you can ship additional luggage through WestJet Cargo

Checked baggage fees

Prepay for bags and save. Guests are encouraged to prepay for their first and second checked bags online through Manage Trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight as fees will increase by $10 through self-serve check-in, and a further $10 if paid at the airport with an agent.

When is your first bag free?

Westjet world elite mastercard

First bag fees are included for WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ primary cardholders and up to 8 guests on the same booking.

First bag fees are included for EconoFlex, Premium and Business fares and Silver, Gold and Platinum WestJet Rewards members. First bag fees are also included for Econo and Member Exclusive fares to and from Asia. 

Second bag fees are included for Premium and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members

Third bag fees are included for Platinum Rewards members.

Third and fourth checked bags

Travelling with more than 2 checked bags? Checked baggage size and weight limits still apply and fees can only be paid for through online and airport check-in. Allowance and fees will vary based on aircraft type and destination.

Overweight and oversized bags for all fares: $100-$118

Bag fees are charged in Canadian (CAD) or U.S. (USD) dollars, depending on the booking’s country of origin. For flights departing from outside Canada and the U.S., bag fees will be converted and charged in the local currency of the departure country. GST is charged on fees for all itineraries that originate in Canada.


Travelling with or transferring baggage to our airline partners

If you are travelling with one of our airline partners, the baggage policies of the other carrier may apply. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the fees for your journey by visiting our airline partners page. Fees are collected on a one-way basis by the airline operating the first flight for each direction of your journey.

Carry-on baggage allowance

WestJet allows each Econo, Member Exclusive, EconoFlex, Premium, PremiumFlex, Business or BusinessFlex guest to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item.   

Items which do not fit into the sizing device will be placed in checked baggage and applicable baggage fees may be collected.

UltraBasic carry-on baggage allowance: 

WestJet allows each UltraBasic guest to bring one (1) personal item. WestJet does not allow UltraBasic guests to bring or pay for a carry-on bag except in the following cases: 

  • UltraBasic guests travelling to and from Europe and Asia are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item. 
  • UltraBasic guests are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item when Extended Comfort has been purchased for all flights in a single direction, including connections. 

UltraBasic guests who arrive at the gate with a carry-on bag that does not meet an exception listed above will be required to check the bag and will be charged a checked bag fee and a service fee. UltraBasic guests are encouraged to prepay for checked bags online through Manage trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight to save money.

Personal Medical Devices do not count towards carry-on baggage allowance. Learn more about what items are permitted in addition your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance.

 All carry-on and personal items must:

  • fit in the sizing device (wheels included – if applicable)
  • be light enough to allow you to place the bag in the overhead compartment unaided
  • be stored under the seat, and carry-on items should be stored in the overhead compartment on board the aircraft
  • be acceptable as carry-on for the country to which you are travelling. Acceptable items vary by country. Visit catsa.gc.ca to confirm what you are able to bring before your flight as WestJet is not responsible for items not permitted through security, at your point of departure or upon arrival at your destination
  • pass through security. Items such as: shampoo, perfume, toothpaste and moisturizers are only permitted in limited amounts


Consolidation rules: 

  • Duty free items must be consolidated with your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance. Duty free is not allowable as an additional baggage item. 
  • Personal electronics MUST be placed into a personal item or carry-on bag. 
  • Food items may be brought on board for consumption during the flight. Items not consumed will be considered part of your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance.  

Travel with pets

When your pet flies WestJet, they're our special guests too. They may ride in the cabin or checked in with their kennel on most domestic and international flights. Details are: 

  • A pet kennel fee applies for pets  
  • To add your pet to your travel plans, please contact us by phone
  • If you do not request space for your pet(s) 48 hours before departure, space may not be available, and you may not be permitted to travel with your pet(s)
  • To add a service dog to your travel plans, visit our service dogs page
  • Pre-booking is the only way to ensure space is saved on the aircraft for you pet. If you do not prebook, it is possible your pet may not be able to travel
