Experience Winnipeg and Beyond

New non-stop flights from L.A. and Atlanta to Winnipeg mean experiencing the wonder of Winnipeg—a destination in and of itself–and the gateway to bucket list adventures in Churchill, the Polar Bear Capital of the World and one of the top three places to see northern lights.

While here, check out three must sees:

1) Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park’s zoo features The Journey to Churchill, which astounds visitors with show-stealing polar bears that playfully swim overhead. It also features The Leaf–an eye-catching horticultural attraction featuring Tropical and Mediterranean biomes, Canada’s tallest indoor waterfall and a restaurant, all surrounded by lush thematic gardens.

2) WAG–Qaumajuq

Home to the world’s largest collection of contemporary Inuit art, Qaumajuq–the city’s newest cultural centre–features thousands of sculptures, stunning tapestries, bold paintings and more, all artfully displayed in galleries that mimic the snow drift-like Arctic landscape.

3)  Canadian Museum for Human Rights

This marvel of architecture is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights, featuring interactive, heart-wrenching and awe-inspiring exhibits.

Adventures on the Edge of the Subarctic

Churchill is a place for adventurers and is located in the northern region of Manitoba. Your first clue that this place is special is that no roads lead there and you must travel by plane or train to reach this remote town on the shores of Hudson Bay. But once there, you’ll experience a bucket-list adventure like no other.

1) Northern Lights

Churchill is one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights in Canada. Located underneath the auroral oval, Churchill boasts up to 300 nights a year of northern lights. Your best chance to see northern lights is from February to March, when the night skies are at their clearest and darkest.

2) Polar bears

Churchill is home to a polar bear population that outnumbers residents once a year. Best time to go is October and November when the polar bears roam the shore ice of Hudson Bay. Join a Tundra Buggy tour, stay in a remote eco-lodge or book a walking tour with a professional guide.

3) Beluga Whales

Visit Churchill June through August to see thousands of beluga whales congregate in the waters of the Hudson Bay and the Churchill Estuary River. Kayak alongside belugas, take a boat tour or see the whales from Matonabee, a glass-bottomed boat.
