My fiancé and I visited this Secrets resort for 10 nights over Christmas. After experiencing an amazing visit in September 2022 at the Secrets Rivera Maya, we were looking forward to visiting the Akumal Resort, due to the 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor. As with our previous Secrets visit we upgraded to the Preferred Club and a Suite. We were placed in building 4 (which is located on the edge of the resort near an adjacent hotel. The cost for the stay was circa $14K, excluding extras. This is the first ever review I have written and I chose to do so in the hope that future visitors avoid the issues my fiancé and I experienced. I feel it’s best to give facts and specifics on our experience and allow people to make their own minds up, rather than delivering an emotionally charged version of events. On our first morning we ordered room service breakfast, the wait time indicated on the iPad displayed 35 minutes. Our food arrived 2hours later (we initially ordered at 10.40 and it was received just after 12.43). During the 2hours we contacted in-room dining on 3 occasions each time being told it will be 10minutes. Upon arrive the food was cold. That same evening we again elected to order room service. A bottle of wine was the order. After making the order we also called to verify due to the issues we had received earlier in the day. The wait time displayed 35mins again, with our wine being delivered over an hour later. During this time we called on two separate occasions, with being told it will be 5 minutes on both occasions. The second day we went to the pool after our breakfast. We were greeted by the waiter that day Cruz who asked if we would like a drink. My fiancé and I ordered a Coke and a water. After 45minutes of not receiving any drinks we escalated to the supervisor by the pool. When challenged the waiter Cruz was defensive and insinuated that my fiancé was asleep. At this point we escalated to the Preferred Club team having 3 issues in the first 48hours of our stay wasn’t what we were expecting. After our conversation we were assured service would improve and we would receive the 5 diamond service level that we had paid for. Over the course of the next 48hours we can confirm room service improved with delivery being within the 35min window. On the 8th day however my fiancé and I went to the spa for 2 x 80min full body massages . Our appointment was scheduled for 2pm we arrived early and were shown to a wait area with around 5 other couples also having 2pm massages. All 4 other couples were greeted within a few minutes of 2pm whilst my fiancé and I had to wait around 15-20 minutes. We felt the only reason we were seen was due to ourselves escaping to someone. On our 9th and final full day before our departure my fiancé and I were welcomed at 9.45am to someone drilling into the wall from next door for over an hour. We contacted the hotel concierge by phone initially only to be told that building work can be done between 9-5pm and they are unaware of what rooms will be affected. As we left to go to breakfast we escalated the issue to the to the preferred Club. They confirmed that building work had stopped. On our return to our room at 4pm we had builders working outside our room again. There are some fundamental issues that guests need to be made aware of with being situated in Building 4 Suites. Firstly there isn’t great sound proofing in the rooms and the hotel next door is close by. We experienced crying babies and a generator going off for 30mins after midnight. The building work needs better management and more consideration for workflow with guests. All in all the experience we had isn’t one we expected. The unfortunate result of these pattern of events mean we won’t return in the future.

We are just in our taxi back to the airport after spending our Christmas at Secrets Akumal. It was that good I’m spending my time in the car recommending to all my friends and family. It was our first time in Mexico and after looking at reviews Secrets Akumal was very very highly rated. Almost too good to be true but after our 10 night stay I can say it is intact all true!! Everything was perfect, the grounds are kept beautiful. The staff are exceptional and so kind and helpful. The housekeepers are very professional and friendly. The whole of the entertainment team are amazing and welcoming. Such a good energy throughout the whole hotel. The waiters and waitresses at breakfast are lovely! And the seaside grill waiters also deserve a shoutout! Everything is run so well and thorough. The bbqs at lunch are some of the best food I have ever eaten. With endless activities to enjoy we was never bored! Antonio made our trip even better with his constant help and friendly face and recommendations everyday! Thankyou Antonio! The lady’s at the coffee shop remembered our order and was always so smiley and attentive! It’s the perfect balance of luxury peace and a hint of party.
