Island Getaway

Thetravelingtoads (Tyler, Texas) on May 20, 2025

We stayed a week at Melia in a Level room. Check in at the Level Lounge was quick and easy. We made our allotted dinner reservations (you are rationed based on the number of nights you are staying) as... soon as we checked in. The Lounge area was part of the business area, so it was not particularly inviting as a place to hang out. We never did get an assigned concierge, so we aren't too sure what they were supposed to do for us. We got excellent responses when we called the front desk or housekeeping. As Level guests, the room came with very nice soaps and shampoos, the minibar was kept stocked with soft drinks and a few snacks, we had slippers and robes (way too small for me to use), and the room had a great view of the pool and ocean. The bed had a comfortable mattress and plenty of pillows. Housekeeping did a fabulous job all week. While very spacious, the room was very dated with obvious problems with doors, faucets, and air conditioning. Hot moist air constantly blew around the door (no door seals) making the room and everything in it feel damp. We were able to get a dehumidifier and it did help. The day we arrived, the ocean was fantastic, with crystal clear water and not a bit of seaweed. Unfortunately, a huge raft of seaweed rolled in on day 2, and it was 2 days before we attempted to get back in the ocean. It cleared up some more as the week went on, and we were able to spend some quality time in the water. We spent most of our time at the adult pool. We met a lot of really nice people and the bartenders did an excellent job with drinks. They played very relaxing music poolside. Like our room, the pool was dated and needed maintenance. The pool water was a bit cloudy, and it only appeared to have one working water jet. Several of the underwater pool lights were hanging loose. We had no trouble getting loungers at the pool until our last day. That day we were able to reserve a Bali bed for the day and everything worked out fine. There were three days when other guests decided to play "personal" music poolside. It was so loud it drowned out the good music the resort was playing. This was reported to management, but nothing was ever done to fix the noise problem. We have been to a lot of all-inclusive resorts (over 30) in Mexico, and this one had some of the worst food. Melia is a short taxi ride to town where there are lots of restaurants, so there are options other than dining at the resort. Our best meal for the week was at the Fish House, where we had steak and shrimp for dinner. Beware: mosquitos can get in through the closed windows and can tear you up at the Fish House. Mole and Mole Taco were okay but not memorable. We were disappointed that the Level Mediterranean Bistro was closed for the season, as we had seen a lot of good reviews for it. The buffet was limited in selection, repetitious, and the food just wasn't very good. Most grilled meats were overcooked and tough. Several of the items on the buffet were not kept hot (the right-hand food warmer wasn't much above room temperature, according to the temperature monitor). They did have good chicken legs. We saw them at every lunch, and dinner, and even sometimes at breakfast. So if there was nothing else of interest, there was always a chicken leg! Tip: when you walked in the buffet, if someone came up to you and directed you to a table, go with them. You will get excellent service. If you seat yourself, it is hit or miss on service. While we were pleased with the excellent service we received, there is a lot of room for improvement in the maintenance of the facilities, and the quality of the dining.

Solid, Simple Resort

Alexandra R on May 19, 2025

We had a wonderful stay at Melia—it's a beautifully maintained and exceptionally clean resort. Our room was spacious, modern, and spotless thanks to the incredible housekeeping team, who did a phenomenal j...ob each day. Everything in the room felt well-kept and up to date, and we experienced zero issues during our stay. The food throughout the resort was delicious, and we especially appreciated the effort to provide gluten-free options at the buffet. It would be helpful if the gluten-free signage were a bit clearer, as it was sometimes off to the side, making it hard to tell which item it referred to—but it was still great to see dietary needs being considered. One of the absolute highlights was the taco restaurant—sooo good! The tacos were amazing, and our two servers were fantastic. I wish I remembered their names because they truly went above and beyond, especially in helping accommodate my fiancé’s unique food allergy. We had fun with the resort’s activities—volleyball and croquet were both great ways to unwind. While we didn’t spend most of our time on-site, we were a little bummed that the salsa dance class listed on the activity board wasn’t held. That said, the staff who assist with booking off-site excursions were very helpful. Just a heads-up: some excursions ended up being a bit more expensive than what we were quoted at the resort, so it’s worth bringing extra money in case they try to add on fees. We also enjoyed the pickleball courts and croquet area, which were nice perks. The spa was a relaxing experience overall, and the team was friendly and professional. However, we noticed that some of the details from the intake form weren’t fully followed—for example, my fiancé’s request to avoid a certain oil (due to an allergy) was unfortunately overlooked. And there were body parts we asked them to avoid, which they did not. While not a dealbreaker, it’s something to be mindful of for those with sensitivities. The Level upgrade was absolutely worth it for us—especially for the elevated drink options and added touches of comfort. Before arrival, we filled out Melia’s pre-arrival form, which included special requests like favorite drinks, housekeeping preferences, and request details. While we appreciated the option, it didn’t seem like the form was reviewed, as some of the requests weren’t acknowledged. My only real disappointment was that my fiancé’s birthday wasn’t celebrated in a more festive way—we found a few balloons on the bed upon arrival and later received a small cake to the room, but a door banner or special touch at dinner would’ve made it feel more personal. Overall, we really enjoyed our time at Melia. The staff, food, and amenities made for a memorable trip. With just a few improvements in communication and personalization, this place could easily be a five-star experience.

The nicest resort on cozumel for the money !

Rick N on May 16, 2025

The staff at this resort are friendlier and more professional than the other resorts we have stayed at on Cozumel. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We have been going for years to different resorts there but this... was the first time to Melia but we are already planning our next one. The best snorkeling experience ever! Saw so many stingrays and swam with literally thousands of fish. You will love it. Beds are comfortable and the food is fabulous! They have an adult pool and a family pool which is great because we hang at the adult pool. No crowds or chaos. I'm convinced, it's the place to go in Cozumel. Thanks to all the staff, cooks and waitstaff! You are incredible! #nagelcontractor Rick Nagel
