Amazing Resort!

Taylor D on Jul 20, 2024

I was very anxious coming to this resort because of some of the reviews. I am glad I didn’t listen to them! This resort was amazing! 10/10 will come back and would recommend. We were greeted at check-in with a drink and a cool towel. Our room was exactly as advertised (swim up pool). The whole staff was amazing and kind. Everyone was so helpful and accommodating. We stayed for 7 nights (ended up being 8 nights because our flight was canceled the day we planned to leave!). The pools and beach were fabulous and the food was great! I saw several reviews stating the food was awful, that was not the case for us at all. The restaurants cycle through being open every night and we never got bored of our options. The drinks were good and always flowing! We did not do any of the entertainment while we were here, but they had multiple events daily for guests. When you arrive, they do ask you to attend a meeting (they swear it’s not a timeshare) where they give you a whole pitch on a membership through Hyatt. We went to the meeting and didn’t sign up for anything and for a thank you for sitting through the meeting they gave us (my husband and I) two massages at $200 off each, so all we had to pay was $58. The massage was fantastic! I had Joy and he was wonderful. The whole experience was well worth it. Some people complained about the dress codes and the preferred status areas, but it didn’t effect our stay at all. Overall, we had a fabulous trip and loved our time!

Return to an Old Friend

Mark P (Toledo, Ohio) on Jul 20, 2024

This was the fourth time we have stayed at Secrets Aura in Cozumel. We brought our adult children with us so that we could renew our vows on the dock for our 20th anniversary. Tropical Storm Alberto was going by while we were there. It rained every day. We were not able to have the the ceremony or the catered dinner on the dock. The wedding planner pivoted & we had the ceremony in the lobby & the dinner at Bordeaux restaurant. The renewal ceremony was very nice but through miscommunication, we were not allowed to choose our dinner and most in the party didn't like several of the courses. Many complain about Aura because it is one of the older Secrets. That was something we always liked about it. The workers throughout the resort have always been very nice. They have made some updates to the rooms. Since Secrets is adults only, usually it is couples. The updates made it so that there is not a door to the bathroom. In the room my son & daughter shared, you could see anyone in the shower from anywhere in the room. I felt bad because it flooded right outside their room. Luckily, it never made it into the room. My wife was in a wheelchair & there was no way to get it up to two of the restaurants without her walking the stairs and us carrying the wheelchair. We just skipped the one restaurant but the other was the buffet where we are breakfast every morning. Again, they were nice about it & helped me when I had to carry the chair myself. The food was okay but not as good as we remembered. Portion sizes were much smaller. Since it rained every day, we went to the preferred lounge & played pool & games many nights. They had good snacks all the time and the bartenders were really nice We were disappointed in the weather but we still had a good time!

Nice beach but property needs work

mikerobinson04 on Jul 20, 2024

The beach and setting is awesome. The resort needs work. The pool was not fully functioning. There's wasn't enough water for the skimmers to work and some of the pool lights were falling out. It really needs to be redone

Would not return

cwhtkr1 (Winthrop Harbor, Illinois) on Jul 18, 2024

The hotel is in dire need of repair nd updating. There are non guests areas that were being used for trash and debris which led to smells. On a daily basis we had to get with the concierge to have our room either cleaned or restocked. The pool was dirty and never saw anybody doing any maintenance.

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING!!

Williebr4545 (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) on Jul 18, 2024

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING!! Hyatt has taken over and this is NOT the same place!! My family has been going to Secrets for over 10 years. We book the Preferred Area, Oceanfront, which on all 7 or 8 sites I checked, was the top selection. I book this because after surgery on my ankle, it’s painful to climb stairs and this selection has, in the past, been lower level upon request (I’m 74). However, when we arrived, I was told that we’d have to pay extra to get lower level. I asked to speak to the reservations manager and he said unless we paid more, they wouldn’t give us the downstairs floor even though this is Oceanfront. He explained that they’d added something called “Beachfront”for the lower level rooms, which was new and not on any sites I’d seen!!! This was a few days after Beryl and there were not many people there, so there WAS availability. THEN, we had to wait till 4 o’clock to get a room AND the power was out, so it was sweltering!!! No comping anything for that. And although the staff were working tirelessly, there weren’t enough to get the place back in shape after the hurricane. We, for days, had to step over dead and downed palms and plants on the walkways. We only had internet service once briefly one morning and off and on on the last day. We also lost power off and on. Now, the food: think Shoney’s on vacation. No guacamole or avocados the whole 9 days. No longer any cilantro in anything. It’s very bland, very repetitive food. There is only one restaurant with a.c. at night and the menu never changed, with the selection being limited. The meat is overprocessed and tasteless. The “French” and “Asian” restaurants are a joke. Warm vichyssoise?? Everything always has 2 ingredients as sides: potatoes and carrots. That’s it. Why can’t they just do good, wholesome Mexican food of different regions? I’ve lived in Mexico and each region has a different, delicious cuisine. The flies were so bad at breakfast that you had to eat and swat at the same time. C’mon. Get some of those cheap Temu fly fans. Also, there are now only a scattering of umbrellas, so shade by the water is hard to come by. Secrets used to have the beach cleaned and the cleaned cushions out on the chaise loungers every morning. Now you have to find your own and they’re often wet from a previous night’s shower. They are certainly full of sand. The beach towels were non existent for 2 days. We made a choice to never return. It’s too bad because we really loved Secrets. And they’ve lost good customers since we also would bring our children and their spouses and we book the upper end rooms. The only positive is the staff. They are hard working and unfailingly polite . Bye, Bye, Secrets! Hello subpar, very Americanized Hyatt.
