This was our first trip since Covid due to various reasons. We were a bit shocked at how the prices had doubled and tripled since 2019 to Mexico. We booked through Sunwing and had upgraded to a Junior Suite Oceanview King, however upon check-in we were given a garden view on the 2nd floor with a view of the trellis and a partial side ocean view if standing out on balcony by railing. Thankfully the concierge promptly moved us up to the 6th floor, #4619, with 2 double beds as no Kings were available with Oceanview Junior Suite. Upon arrival we mistakenly went up to the Sky Lounge in Altitude Tower to see the view and have our first drink. I had read reviews saying you didn’t need the upgrade for access…nice bartender informed us and kindly gave us a complimentary drink. Place was empty due to wind but great view. Later, speaking to other Canadians who had upgraded from Junior Suite Oceanview to Altitude for $55/day to $250 a week, we were emailed a quote for $69 US a night (per person?). Our first two nights, dinner at Risotto and Ayami were disappointing. Took 2 hours before our entrée was served lukewarm or Room Temperature (RT). Even other guests noticed our poor service, it seemed we had new servers who needed training. Mushroom risotto was good however it was RT and the parmesan cheese was questionable. Osso Bucco was tender but over half grizzle with brown gravy, no vegetables. I did get quite sick on two different days, not sure if it was related to RT food. Dinners the rest of the week had much better service, although dishes were not always warm. Overall, the presentation & quality of dishes, entrees and desserts varied and were not 4*. Although the sushi rolls at Ayami were nice as well as the vanilla ice-cream with chocolate sauce. No dinner reservations were required during our April visit, sometimes you were given a buzzer to carry if there was a wait. Breakfast buffet was okay, some hot items in chafing dishes were RT. There was lots of fresh fruit cut up but no berries. One day they had good French toast and cinnamon buns twice. No maple syrup. Omelet station was excellent and they had bacon strips available if you ask. Mimosas were available to order. Some servers could also make a cappuccino. Take a Bite Café was great for cappuccino/frappuccino/espresso and caramel macchiato. They were open till late evening and had fruit cups, yogurts and salads to go. Their small slices of cake were also much better than the buffet’s. Lunch buffet was also okay, but some hot items were RT. Could make your own salad with various greens and toppings. Once they were serving tasty custom sopes at the omelet grill. We tried Surfos Snack bar a few times for decent burgers, pizza and fish tacos. For dinner our favorite was The Grill with Oceanview seating, we went twice. The ribeye skewers and shrimp skewers both with grilled vegetables were good, but small amount, so order more if needed. Don’t bother with the very thin New York Steak. The chocolate cake on a cookie was quite good, a dense tiny chocolate mousse cake. Both the roasted tomato and portabella cream soups were good, hot and served in a glass mug. The Mexican restaurant was good, we went twice. They start with a large platter of salsa, picante, guacamole, red & green sauces and warm tortilla chips. We liked the sopes, tortilla soup and enchiladas. The adult pool (much warmer than Infinity pool) and Oasis Swim up bar had excellent service. Pedro and Manuel were awesome. It was completely closed for the first few days due to a dangerous bee hive at the bar. I’m not sure if this will be resolved as bee activity started up again the day they reopened the area. I’d read in previous reviews about the adult pool being closed due to maintenance. On several evenings there was musical entertainment by the Altitude tower. Both the violinist and saxophone player were excellent. Lobby bar was nice in evening before dinner. Recommend a glass of prosecco before dinner if you are waiting. Hugo was great and made a good margarita. Unfortunately, they only had Reposado/Triple sec, no Anejo/Gran Marnier. Our room, bathroom and double beds were comfortable, however sofa looked old and soiled. Mini bar restocked daily with pop, 3 beers and 3 waters. Bring a refillable water bottle and get safe drinking water at bar/Surfos. Maid service was great, they even tied up the curtains some days. Rooms in Altitude tower appeared identical to our Junior Suite Ocean View. We really enjoyed the Krystal organized Thursday night tour to Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo, $300 pesos each. Christopher, the activities guy and saxophone player, was an awesome tour guide. He brought us to 6 places including a church, took our photos at the famous sign, art galleries and a jewelry store specializing in pearls. Then we had about an hour to explore on our own. Overall, our trip was okay but I would be very hesitant to return to Krystal Grand Los Cabos and will probably not consider a Krystal resort again because of our experience, especially the room temperature meals. I felt we paid a premium for our Sunwing trip and upgraded room but recieved budget level. We did see staff briefly placing new signs over top of some restaurant signs and taking photos so we are not sure if things will change.
