Great time at the Grand Palladium Resort

Lisa B on Nov 16, 2024

I loved my time at the Grand Palladium Resort in Lucea, Jamaica. The resort has a multitude of restaurants and bars to enjoy. We had a great time at the beaches that can be accessed on the grounds as well as at the pools onsite. The large infinity pool has a huge swim up bar that has an electric party atmosphere with servers who often sing and/or dance to fun tunes played by the DJ. Soon everyone was singing along with them and it was one giant party! But my favorite memory from my stay there was when Danny, one of the hard-working groundskeepers, took the time to give me a coconut after cutting it open for me and showing me how to drink the water inside and eat the coconut flesh. He explained some of the many health benefits of coconuts to my husband and me and how he eats one every day as a part of his healthy lifestyle. We overall had a great time and can’t wait to go back. The people of Jamaica are very kind and welcoming. I always felt safe and cared for.

Not worth the money or time, subpar service and amenities.

Our stay at the Grand Palladium Resort from November 9-16 was deeply disappointing. Our group of nine included four disabled military veterans, and we travel abroad every Veterans Day, having previously visited Mexico and the Dominican Republic multiple times. Unfortunately, this was our worst experience by far. To start with the positives, the beach and weather were excellent. However, that’s where the good points end. The resort itself is poorly managed. The staff appeared unhappy, unaccommodating, and lacked basic hospitality skills. Many were unprofessional and didn’t wear name tags, making it difficult to identify them. Several staff members even confided in us that this is one of the worst-run properties on the island. Here is one of many examples of poor hospitality. On the day of check out my spouse went to the bell hop area to see if we could get a porter to retrieve our luggage the time was 7:20 Am. My spouse approached an employee in the bell hop area and asked could he help with the bags. His reply was I’m not on duty until 7:30 Am. There were at least 10-different better responses he could have provided. After he finally picked up our bags I asked who was the manager of the bell hops, his reply I am. Say no more. The accommodations were subpar. The buildings are three stories high with no elevators, a significant issue for disabled guests like us. Our rooms on the third floor had multiple problems, including poor-quality beds and inconsistent housekeeping. Some days our rooms wasn’t serviced at all. We also experienced flooding due to water leaks, requiring us to change rooms multiple times. Despite paying extra for a king-size bed with an ocean or pool view, our request was not honored upon check-in. Management only offered to move us mid-way through our stay without any compensation for the inconvenience. One of our group members sustained an injury after slipping on a wet floor caused by a leak in her room. The same member of our party checked out early and departed due to the sustained injury caused by flooding in her 2nd room. Half way through our stay our room keys stopped working. The response from management was we had to get a bell hop to let us in and out of our rooms this occurred over a 2-day period. We had a rude exchange with one of the employees working the beach area. She in a very nasty way asked our party of 7- to relocate because we were blocking the view of an unused cabana. There were several vacant cabanas. We happen to be setup about 10-feet away and she wanted us to move. We did not, and a security person came over and told her let us be. The food was mediocre at best. While you won’t go hungry, there was nothing memorable about the dining experience. The better restaurants require reservations one to two days in advance, making it hard to enjoy a spontaneous meal. Additionally, the location of the resort is quite remote; it’s on the outskirts of Montego Bay about 50-55 minutes away from the main entertainment areas. The traffic is horrendous—worse than what we experience in Washington, D.C. We always tip well, and each member of our group tipped between $100 and $200 during our stay, but this didn’t seem to improve the service or the attitude of the staff. Several employees expressed dissatisfaction with how management treats them, which likely contributes to the poor service. Overall, we strongly recommend avoiding the Grand Palladium in the outskirts more rural parts of Montego Bay at all cost. If you’re looking for a quiet, low-energy resort with minimal nightlife and subpar service, this might be a fit for you. However, if you want an exceptional experience in Jamaica, consider looking elsewhere. For an exceptional island experience consider Hard Rock Punta Cana Dominican Republic. If you are looking for poor service quiet leisure with minimal expectations the Grand Palladium is good for that. One last note, you must pack patient’s. Jamaican time is + 15 to 25 minutes. If you ask how long any response you receive expect the actual time is + 15 to 25 minutes. Me and my 9-person travel group give the Grand Palladium in Montego Bay Jamaica a 1/2 star or F+ rating.
