OVERALL: The adults-only section is very nice, but you really feel like a 2nd class citizen if you are not Diamond Club. Without a butler, reservations for restaurants get all booked up, no one takes respo...nsibility to ensure you get your room service, and there are options that aren’t available to you. I would only recommend this hotel again if you are Diamond Club. They are VERY conscious of food allergies - you will be asked every single time you enter a restaurant for your room number, last name, and if you have any food allergies. I wish they would have some sort of marker on your bracelet or something so (as people with no allergies) you’re not asked every time. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Across the board, staff interact with you as a guest as though it is an irritation that they have to do something for you. This is the biggest detraction from this lovely resort, and very different from other resorts I have visited in Jamaica previously. From defensiveness (“I’m not on drinks, only food, you’ll have to talk to her”) to ignoring (2 staff behind a desk, both helping 1 customer, don’t acknowledge you entering the office) to forgetting (sorry I forgot your hot water for tea and you had to ask 3 people”) to making us walk back to the hostess stand because we “hadn’t checked in properly”, there always seems to be rules that you as a guest don’t know that you aren’t following, and staff are mad about it. If you aren’t tipping, you basically don’t exist. Some of this might be avoided through having a butler, because THEY will then deal with all the other staff? Staff are undertrained - they don’t know the answers to questions, they don’t have walkie-talkies to communicate to other parts of the resort, and some departments have too many people hanging around (towels) while others are visibly understaffed (bars). It is the biggest reason (from my vantage point) why reality does not match expectations. Staff are making things up as they go along because there are obviously not enough standards that are monitored for compliance VIBES TEAM/ENTERTAINMENT: I will start by saying that I am not a joiner of activities at resorts. I just want to sit in the sun and drink and eat and read my magazines and stare at the sea. On our first day, a Vibe team person asked us to join Aquacize and we said no, but he kept pushing. Then when we came back to our chairs with lunch and he said “with all those calories now you need to join aquacize” and we asked him not to fat shame people for eating, he was mortified and apologized saying that’s not what he meant, but also had no idea that perhaps commenting on what people eat while you ask them to join an exercise class was highly inappropriate. Another member sat and chatted with us for a while, but did not have the skills to pick up on the clues that we weren’t engaging - he tried several more awkward times during the week, and so we just avoided him. This comes back to training - these folks need to be taught how to engage with people appropriately, what the signs are that they don’t want to, and how to just leave them alone. There was a foam party on Friday (not listed in the schedule in the app) and the music and party was BUMPIN’ at the Hideaway Pool. There was a big group of people to celebrate a birthday so I think they had requested a party atmosphere because there weren’t any twerking contests or foam for the rest of the week. I was worried it was going to be like that all week but most other days were quiet. Any live music in the Hideaway area is great because you can also enjoy it from your balcony! Except the beach party - the DJ was terrible and even with earplugs, it was very loud in our room until 11:30pm. We literally watched people walk up to the entrance, hear the music, and keep walking - too funny. FOOD/DRINKS: The decor and theming in the a la carte restaurants is on point. However, what is written in the menus is NOT what you get - at least not exactly. An example: French restaurant offers “Seared Lamb Tenderloin with blue cheese potato pave, chocolate merlot demi, and minted pea puree” but what I got was rack of lamb with mashed potatoes, some kind of gravy, jarred mint jelly, and roasted vegetables. Or the Italian restaurant offers a pizza with parma ham and arugula but it’s cubes of chicken ham and no arugula. And they never had seabass, even though it’s on every menu. So the menus sound very high dining and amazing with drizzles and sauces and sides, but you will get that protein and whatever sides they have in the kitchen. So the food is yummy, but you feel disappointed because it’s not what you ordered? The buffet isn’t huge, and has a lot of Caribbean food - so if you’re in Jamaica for curried goat and boiled yam, you’ll be set! We were sad to not see plantains more often and never had festival! There could have been more themed options on the theme nights. I would love to see staff have a better understanding that folks want constant coffee and tea refills in the AM - you shouldn’t have to look around to find someone for more coffee in those tiny mugs. Each day, there was a jerk pan (charcoal BBQ) set up and a small lunch buffet by the pool in the Hideaway section - we ate there most days as it was just so yummy! It would be nice if that buffet had morning/afternoon snacks as well - there is nowhere to get fruit/snacks other than the really far away coffee shop (that has limited supplies). All the information is available on the app - it’s not super intuitive, but the information is there. You can see what theme night is at the buffet and view all the menus as well as make your reservations there. There was only mango served one night when we happened to walk through the buffet after dinner. Otherwise, it’s honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, and pineapple. Some apples. It was weird, because mangos were in season and we were able to get them from a roadside stand! They don’t want you to take food from restaurants or buffets back to the room so the dishes don’t break. But they don’t have any tinfoil or boxes if you want half your pizza for later. So we would mostly just leave with plates anyhow and only 1 person ever said anything. There is room service that is advertised as 24/7. As I wasn’t feeling especially well when we arrived, we ordered room service for the next morning, but it never showed up! We talked with staff who looked into it for us, and we sort of got what we ordered the next day, but I wouldn’t say room service has excellent precision. Bars have the typical drinks, but few menus available - most of the people are drinking things that aren’t even on the menu anyhow! Every all-inclusive could do better at this so people know what to get instead of having to ask strangers, hey what’s that you’re drinking? ROOMS: Gorgeous, recently re-done rooms with clever temperature, ceiling fan, and light controls right next to the bed. They have a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom but we never used it - not so much a good fit for a friends trip! But we appreciated that there was a curtain you can pull across for privacy if you use it. Balcony has lovely view with 2 chairs and a table and places to hang your wet things. Lots of towels, huge shower with 2 shower heads, big TV, mini fridge, comfy reading chair. Great, modern room with cold A/C. Winner! No issue enjoying Jamaica gold from your balcony (or anywhere else for that matter), but no ashtrays are provided. BEACH/POOL: Hideaway section has its own pool that is connected to the building 8 swim out rooms pool. There is a swim up bar with “land access” on the other side and the towel hut is right across from the pool. Across the path is access to the beach that is behind a fence/hedge. The pool is slightly refreshing first thing, but absolute bath water warm by the afternoon! Nice that there are ‘tanning ledges’ and places to sit or an area with a volleyball net. There are umbrellas and a side table for every pair of chairs at the pool and palapa style ones down at the beach. While prime chairs needed reserving before breakfast, there were always enough chairs for everyone. The beach area is small, but the cove feels so natural and almost secret that it’s fun. There are fish to see and lots of people snorkeled. Apparently, a sting ray comes to say hi, but I never saw him. I enjoyed floating out by the buoy line facing out to open sea. The bottom is sandy with “bits of nature” but no water shoes needed. The beach extends to another section, but we never sat over there as it was too far from everything else. If I ever return, I would ask for swim out in building 9, where it is quietest. There is drink service to chairs, but if you aren’t Diamond Club, they will get you maybe twice a day.
