You get what you pay for….

We stayed at Cabana Bay the last week of August, first week of September and overall we had a great holiday - though that was mainly due to our love of Orlando and Universal, rather than the hotel itself. As a family of three - with a 13-year old boy - we stayed in a Poolside Family suite (at least for a few days, more detail below!) and to help explain our review we’ve split it into Pro’s and Con’s below: Pro’s The hotel is located perfectly for Volcano Bay, allowing you to walk in to the water park in minutes - and with the early access you have your choice of beds, and a head start on all the water slides that do get busy later in the day The transport from the hotel to CityWalk - and therefore Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure - is excellent, we timed it as 15 minutes from the bus leaving to reaching the entry gates of the park! If you have a working mobile in the US, accessing Guest Services is quick and easy easy as there is a messaging service via SMS where you can get your questions answered - or requests for things like more bedding, room cleaning etc. - sorted very quickly The staff are all lovely, from the staff on the check in desks, through the cleaners to the staff around the pools, always saying hi and happy to help The pool areas are great, loads of sun loungers with cabanas to rent ($100 per day), and the water is amazing in the summer heat! Con’s The biggest issue we had was the room….the Family Suite comprises a lounge / kitchenette area with a double sofa bed and then through a sliding door a bedroom with 2 x double beds and a bathroom. With our 13 year old, we chose this room specifically to allow some privacy with our son staying on the sofa bed…… the biggest problem is that the sofa bed is terrible, like a plank of wood with a very thin mattress on top which made it unusable for our son (it would probably be ok for small children, maybe 8 and under). We asked the front desk if we could have a padded mattress topper, a proper mattress on the sofa bed, a single rollaway bed or even the removal of the sofa and a bed replacing it - none of which was possible we were told. This left us only the option of taking another room for the 12 nights left of our 14 night holiday, at a cost of £1300, something we intend to take up with TUI upon our return as the hotel admitted they have had lots of complaints about the sofa beds and looking at recent reviews on here I can see the same…… additionally, there isn’t a lot of storage space for a room that could (based on the room description sleep 6 people) with 4 x drawers and a small walk in closet probably smaller than a double wardrobe While the hotel itself is very clean, it is more than a bit worn in places - many of the parasols around the pool are dirty and streaked with stains for example While it’s important to consider this is one of the cheaper hotels Universal offer, it really does show - food options are not great with the main location being a large food court (though the food in the pool bars is quite good, and there is a Starbucks)…..after spending some time in Aventura and Sapphire Falls during our stay too, which are not significantly more expensive, I’d certainly recommend either of those above Cabana Bay Overall, I would say this is a good hotel if you’re looking for the closest hotel to Volcano Bay and are working to a tight budget - just be aware you do get what you pay for. For me, I would recommend considering one of the other amazing hotels Universal offer onsite.

Not without a few minor issues but a good stay overall

Stayed for 9 nights in an exterior entry family suite. Had to request a room change after 2 nights due to smell of damp/mould which was unfortunate. Hotel full that night so had to wait 1 day to move. New room was flawless. Pool areas are great, with a good slide in one, and a lazy river next to the other. Water nice and warm too, and great for a night time swim. Sadly the pools close at the hint of any lightning in the area, bizarrely just a short distance away Volcano Bay is still open as we're told to leave the pool area at Cabana Bay. There were no activities at the pools during the day which was a bit disappointing. Disney pools do lots of activities, and having visited a couple other Universal hotels (Sapphire Falls, Portofino Bay and Royal Pacific) they all had some fun poolside games with prizes (smoothie or cocktail from the pool bar). The family suite is a good size of room, with two double beds and a good sized sofa bed. The kitchen area is good - high breakfast bar with stools to sit at if needed, and a good sized fridge. Microwave also, with some plastic plates, bowls and cutlery should you want to prepare and eat food in the room. Food on site was nothing special, the pool bars were better than Bay Liner Diner for us. Refillable cup was good for soft drinks, but not enough refill stations close to the room (all are at eateries). Transport to City Walk was OK, buses regular enough but it frustrates me that you then have a bit of a walk and very long security queue depending on time of day to then get in to CityWalk/theme parks. In mornings we tended to walk along the path which took 10-15 mins at a brisk pace, or alternatively cross over and get the boat from Sapphire Falls. Both are quicker once security time is factored in, with a separate gate at the walking entrance and security checked before you board the boat at Sapphire Falls. Apart from the smell in the initial room, we really liked our time here. It's a different vibe to staying at a Disney hotel, but that was quite welcome after 2 weeks at Caribbean Beach and Disney parks. The lack of activities by the pool was disappointing, but not a big deal. Early entry to Volcano Bay and Islands of Adventure (note only certain rides open in each park for early entry) is a good perk, particularly the short walk straight into Volcano Bay. Paying such an extortionate amount for parking always frustrates me, and that's a big downside at Universal hotels compared to Disney. Would likely stay here again mainly due to the family suite room type, other Universal hotels don't offer the same space at such a reasonable price point. I would say Sapphire Falls across the road is a nicer hotel if you can get a room there for a similar price.
