HOTEL COVERS UP MOLD IN THE ROOMS

John T on Jun 02, 2025

We have stayed at this resort a few years back and loved it. We went back this past May 23rd - 29th and what difference a few years make. We were in room 2317 in the Villas wing. Tuesday it rained and we r...eturned to our room to find the carpet completely saturated. I called the front desk and almost an hour later a maintenance guy showed up. I have an inspection company that’s been in operation for almost 20 years so have seen a lot of cover ups. When I began investigating, I found that where the water was coming in along the base of the exterior wall, the baseboard was rotted and that rot had been recently painted per the maintenance guy. The carpet was loose along the wall because the tack strip had rotted away from likely years of this issue occurring and being covered up. The concrete slab was crumbling from the constant exposure to water intrusion and there was black mold growing from the baseboard. Behind that baseboard the sheetrock is certainly completely covered with mold where deprived of light and saturated. I showed the hotel guy the black mold and he said this was an ongoing issue in 21 rooms, told me they were full and that my family including two young daughters would have to stay in that room with mold and water logged carpet. I was also told a manager would reach out to me the next morning, but they never did. The maintenance guy didn’t even offer to help clean the saturated carpet that was 2/3 of our room or even lay down a towel. The towels we laid down turned yellowish brown from the filth and the smell was terrible. This hotel had been covering up water intrusion and painting over mold for a long while, just so they can keep renting these effected rooms out to unsuspecting families, most of which have children. I again reached out to a concierge who said a manager would contact me. Again no contact was made. After 10 pm the next night, they finally offered to move us, even though we were checking out in the morning. Whoever thought endangering my children and the children of other families deceived by this hotel, is morally corrupt. I have videos I’ve taken that I’ll be posting and will upload what I can here as well. Almost 2 hours after being told they had nowhere to move us to, despite having available rooms online, they were moving the people in the room next to ours to another room. We thought the headaches and burning throats that myself, my wife and oldest daughter had were allergies, but now it looks more likely that it was the toxic mold being covered up by Universal Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. -In addition, the faucet stop was broken in the shower and the left sink handle leaked so heavily it would flood the counter top, so could not be used. The room they moved us to, the bathroom door would not close as the base of the door hits the frame. We had to hold the door with the bathroom trash can. Stains on the tile near the lobby from someone spilling coffee went ignored for so long that it was able to dry on to the tile.

Everything was perfect!

asilemeter (Des Moines, Iowa) on May 29, 2025

We had a great stay at this hotel! The front desk staff were always responsive to my questions and very helpful overall . The cleaning staff did a wonderful job keeping our room tidy and refilling everythi...ng. The room itself was perfect! We had a quiet room with a bay view as requested. It was a real treat to unwind in our cool, comfy room after a long day at the parks and listen to the opera singers. The grounds are nicely kept and fun to explore. The water taxi was a convenient amenity that made it much easier to get around during the heat wave we experienced. I enjoyed walking the lovely garden paths early in the morning. We’d definitely stay here again.
