Good but could be great

Overall, I would say this was a good trip. I have been to the Dominican many times, and I typically stay at a different resort chain and have come to expect their level of attention to detail and service. I will start my review based on detail. The staff has a more relaxed, less attentive attitude here than at the other resorts i have stayed at. Not to say the staff at impressive isn't nice. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly. They just don't have a sense of urgency or seem to have a "guest first" attitude. It's more guest eventually. The grounds are beautiful. They take very good care of the gardens and plant life. Walkways and public areas are clean, maintained, and seem to be very well looked after. The resort and the buildings are beautiful. The beach overall is great. Plenty of loungers, ocean edge of the beach is full sun with a healthy strip of beach dotted with palms for shade, beach is wonderful. They spend a fair amount of time daily cleaning it and making sure seaweed and previous days cups and trash are dealt with, but they dont start until 10 am, when the beach is already full of guests. Other resorts I've been to do this around 6:30-7 to be finished before many are up. That being said, they dump all the seaweed (and a fair amount of trash) in a pile on the right side of the beach, on the property line with the neighboring business. It's almost directly in front of the last building, where we stayed. So from our ocean front balcony, we had a beautiful beach and ocean view, with a healthy side of trash. We were there for 1 week, the pile only grew, and it was never removed. They do have a nightclub, but it's sort of boring, mainly because the DJ isn't great. It was raining when we were there, and water poured into the men's bathroom from the ceiling like it's a planned water feature. I'm not sure how the ceiling hasn't caved in... bartender in the club, however, was FANTASTIC. He remembered everyone's drinks without asking after the first order. There were some events with music in the lobby, it was so much fun! The room we had was an ocean front with a jacuzzi. The room was clean and in good working order. When housekeeping came, they did a fantastic job. They are pretty stingy with the "minibar." A few bottles of water, a coke, a sprite, and two small cans of coors light. No liquor, which is odd for an all-inclusive. The AC in our room worked very well, was a great reprieve from the heat and crazy pre/post rain humidity. Beds were very comfortable, slightly firm but also soft. The food was also good. The food at the buffets we went to was pretty good, not a giant variety, but always tasted good, and they kept up on keeping it fresh and full. The main buffet was open air, but it has giant fans that keep you pretty cool. The premium buffet was enclosed and had air conditioning with slightly better food. We went to the Mexican, Italian, and Steakhouse restaurants, absolutely AMAZING. Good service and the food was so good. Check-in went OK. it didn't take that long since we were premium. They take you in a separate area, where you sit down for check-in, and it's air-conditioned. I did notice the regular check-in had a very long line, and several people looked grumpy. There is no welcome drink or cool towel upon arrival, which i thought was strange. The cons- Day 1, power went out at the end of check-in. Obviously, out of their control, however, they don't have generators. No fans, the AC stopped working in the check-in room, the printers didn't work, but they finished checking us in. Getting to the room, no lights, no AC, no breeze that day off the ocean, and no running water in the room. After 1.5 hours of sitting in the room in humidity soup, the power came on. AC cooled off the room in maybe 10 minutes, and I could finally take my "I've been traveling for 15 hours and need a shower" shower. The rest of our day was good, however. Day 2, the key card stopped working, no one was around, and my phone was in the room. Walked to the lobby, waited for almost 10 minutes because there was 1 girl at check-in and 5 couples checking in. I think the look on my face is the only reason she excused herself and asked me what I needed. Went back to the room, but it still didn't work. Turns out the door lock batteries were dead. Called the resort, and they sent maintenance. The tech got there in under 10 minutes and immediately opened the door with his tool to let us in, then fixed it. He checked it probably 10 times to make sure it was good to go. He was fantastic. The rest of the day was good. Con #3, and I think it's a big one. Most of the staff either do not speak English or just chooses to not speak English. If you do not speak Spanish and relatively fluid Spanish. You will be in trouble. Thankfully, I was there with a friend who actually lives in the DR, so he did all the translation for me. I'm not one of those Americans who travels elsewhere and gets all bent out of shape because people are speaking other languages, especially in their own country, and I do make an effort to learn basics. However, if you are going to operate a resort in a place that sees massive amounts of American tourists, having a staff that speaks English should be a no-brainer. This particular resort (based on the guest and the staff) caters to locals and others from Spanish speaking countries. The staff is also noticeably more attentive to Spanish speaking guests. We didn't have much issue with service because my friend is a native Spanish speaker, and I tip heavy. The two things together seemed to give us a much better experience. I would like to specifically call out the staff in the premium bar and premium buffet. They do go above and beyond. All super friendly, extremely attentive, and overall awesome. 2 in particular, Lujeiry and Estela, these two ladies are bartenders in the premium bar, usually in the evenings. Oh my goodness, they were great. They immediately made you feel like family and feel so very welcomed. I was 50/50 on the resort until them. I have already booked another trip in February, specifically because of them. I hope the resort reads this, and I hope they each get some sort of bonus. I watched them interact with other guests, knew peoples names, their drinks, the type of glass they liked. People came in specifically just to say hi to them. They are GREAT!! I was there in October to celebrate the big 4 0 birthday. These two ladies and the entire premium staff made it so special. My friend just casually mentioned it was my birthday, one of the ladies snuck off, and the next thing I know, there are multiple servers with a little cake from the buffet singing and clapping. Truly made it a special day. Looking forward to my next trip in 3 months!
A positive and interesting week

This was an amazing experience! So much to do and see here. Everything is amazing - the hotel, the food, the facilities, the staff. Thanks to Gasolina my stay here is very fun and exciting. She is very positive and caring. I also had fun with Carlo, we danced a lot. I like that the staff is very welcoming and kind. I recommend this resort!
