4 star enjoyable

Chloe B on Mar 22, 2025

Just returned home from a week stay at Ambar. We tried the MEAT, Italian, Mexican and Mongolian restaurants our favourite was definitely the Mongolian. The hotel its self was clean and well maintained. Wou...ld probably put the hotel at a 4 star not a 5 if we were being picky as there are little amendments that could be picked up on. The pool issue is an area I was concerned about being from England I knew I would need shade! Unfortunately all the umbrellas had been taken everyday of our holiday by 8 am. We went to saona island with tui and would definitely recommend. Overall I would come here again with more bug spray and more sun cream as the shops are expensive!

Some finessing needed to be a 5!

AngeBisk (Burlington, Canada) on Mar 21, 2025

If we hadn't stayed at Secrets Cap Cana 3 times, I would have probably given this resort a 5. But in comparison, Bahia Principe needs to finesse a number of things to be considered a 5 star in my books. ... Check in was fairly quick except for trying to book some a la cartes upon check in. (more about that later) You get a wrist band with a specific color for the Luxury Ambar and that is what you use to get into your room. (no fumbling for a room key or card) . Being at the highest priced resort of the Bahia Principes, you have access to any of the facilities at the other lower priced resorts, of which you can easily get to by continual running golf carts. (you just cannot eat at the buffets of the other resorts) We stayed in a swim out room in building 60. Great building... right beside the pool and the closest building to the beach. Our room was impeccably clean, as was the building and most of the resort. We were well stocked with towels and the amenities in the fridge were restocked each day. Never an issue. Very large shower and counters with private toilet area. Decent powered blowdryer. Adequate amount of plugs for recharging electronics. Having a swim out gives you a nice large terrace area - 2 chairs & a table, as well as 2 loungers which we liked; however, we really did not make use of the swim out pool enough to validate the cost. Outdoor towel rack was handy. Tip: If you can manage stairs, (no elevators) , save yourself some money & just get a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor. My only complaint about the room .... the beds were horrendously hard which led to poor sleep. Tip: Apparently you can ask for a mattress topper which would solve the problem. Each building has a concierge. I only saw our building concierge sitting there once, which made it difficult to get any service you might require. The beach area is very clean and you can walk quite far in either direction from the hotel. Each resort in the Bahia Principe has their own specific area on the beach. Regardless of this, the Luxury Ambar area is quite crowded and somewhat clausterphobic. Pool area has lots of space, but there is a definite shortage of umbrellas. We went out to grab our pool spots between 7.15 and 8.15 a.m. and we never had a problem getting 2 chaise loungers, a small table & an umbrella. Pool bar bartenders seemed to have an attitude that we were inconveniencing them & often claimed they did not know the drink we were asking for. Each bartender seemed to have their own version of the same drink which was evident when the color of the drink would be completely different. The servers around the pool gave you more consistent drinks & often would be seen behind the bar, actually making the drinks. These ladies definately worked hard all day especially Jesenia (sp?)! There is a large "Activities" Board close to the pool which is handy if you don't want to use your phone app! Tip: 1. Grab a clean towel from the towel hut at the end of the day, so that in the morning, you can save your chair/lounger before the towel hut opens. Or.... bring your own distinctive towel to save your spots. The towel man was probably the friendliest staff person at the resort. 2. Bring your own pool floats. There are none supplied by the hotel. 3. Bring your own towel clips to hold down your towels. Pool area Washrooms were poorly attended to. This seemed to be a daily problem. Daytime activities were plentiful - various games, Spanish lessons, rum tasting, dance lessons, cornhole, darts, cards, volleyball, pool biking, yoga, water aerobics, foam party etc. etc. I agree with some other reviewers that the entertainment team was not the friendliest team I have experienced. They did attract themselves to the younger guests of which were the minority. The guys were more social than the girls. This should be improved upon. Every guest should be treated the same. Nighttime activities were varied and somewhere in the resort you could find something to entertain you. (Beach party, white party, silent disco, fire throwers, live bands, karaoke, singers, etc). The huge lobby was a great gathering place in the evening with lots of seating & good bar service. The Palmira buffet was extensive and very good for breakfast, lunch and even supper. (The Valentines Day Buffet was phenomenal.... a seafood extravaganza!) The attentiveness of the wait staff in the buffet restaurant needs a lot of improvement, due to inconsistencies. Our first breakfast was disappointing - the food was good, but noone attended to us...... no juice, no coffee, no water. We ate & we left. The only time we did not leave a tip as we did not have a single wait staff come to our table. Sometimes, there was not enough cutlery at the table. Other times, my husband would ask for a soda pop with lunch. It never appeared. An alternative for lunch is the poolside Las Brisas Beach Restaurant. Also buffet style but on a much smaller scale than the Palmira. It is nice to be in a semi outdoor space for lunch. There is also a grill cooking lunch beside the pool but on the beach. We did not eat there but others did and all said the food was decent. The Sports Bar is typical of a sports bar and created a great evening during the Superbowl. The a la cartes at the Luxury Ambar were fabulous. The service was much better than in the buffet restaurant and the food was excellent in each of Limbo, Portofino & Meat. Our favourite was Limbo as was the bar and the bartender Kedwin. He made the best cocktails & put on a bit of a bartender show while making them. Tip: You don't have to be eating at the Limbo restaurant to partake in the Limbo bar area! My biggest complaint is that the hotel relies on you using your phone to scan QR codes to get the activity schedule as well as the menu in every restaurant. Truthfully, I am on holidays & I want a break from the electronics that dominate our lives at home. Tip: We left our phones in the room & asked for paper menus. They do have them, but sometimes it takes a long time for them to bring you one! Upon check in, I asked to make our dinner reservations as per the recommendations I read on other reviews. Well, here I am, arriving at almost midnight after a long travel day, & I am told that all the a la cartes in the Luxury Ambar are unavailable for my entire stay! I was told that I should have booked my restaurants up to 10 days prior to my arrival. Did not know this. I could not comprehend that I paid for an adults only luxury hotel & I am unable to dine at any of their restaurants! I ended up with reservations at various restaurants in the other Bahia Principe resorts - most of which are family resorts. No offence to families with kids; but after paying for an adults only resort, I do NOT want to be in restaurants with children. I found this entire system ridiculous. Since my email was not working on my phone in the Dominican, I was unable to download the app and verify it via my e-mail which would have made my life easier. So, I had to go to the lobby concierge every day and beg for a reservation at the Luxury Ambar a la cartes. Luckily, due to cancellations, we managed to get into all the Luxury Ambar a la cartes and they were all worth it! On vacation, who needs this stress? Tip: Download the Bahia Principe app onto your phone ahead of your trip. 10 days before, you can make your dinner reservations They also encourage you to check in online on your app. SPA: Had a great massage. Well worth the price! The spa in the Luxury Ambar is small but very nice. If you want to have the water therapy session along with your massage, you have to book at the large spa which is located at one of the other Bahia Principe Resorts & you need to take a golf cart to get there. Tip: Don't accept the first price they try to sell you on. Hold out for a bigger discount. At a cost, we were able to get a late check out. (Apparently, this can only be arranged on the day of your departure) . All in all, a very nice resort where many of the guests are returning guests , which says something in itself. Now that we know the system and how to work it, we will probably be back!
