Getaway trip

E Russell Y on Sep 28, 2024

Hotel is well located and room was very comfortable. The concierge service was excellent but the overall cost of the stay was too high given the level of service and having to share the grounds with many cruise ship tourists. We had difficulty getting into the hotel bar due to crowding. Overall good experience but not good value for the money.

A grand hotel but not a grand experience

robyn r (Melbourne, Australia) on Sep 27, 2024

This iconic and beautiful hotel is something to behold which is probably why it was crowded beyond belief when we were there. It is not only the people booked to stay here but the many tour groups and other visitors to Quebec who want to explore this place. Check-in was later than advertised. Our room, though an upgrade, was small and showing signs of ageing (e.g. frayed towels). At breakfast, service was very slow (due to the crowds). There were chipped plates. We expected more from a high-end and expensive hotel.

Incredible stay…but a warning to others

brads153 (Vancouver, Canada) on Sep 26, 2024

I absolutely loved my stays at this hotel over the decades and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Quebec City. It is THE place to stay to enjoy the history, culture and excitement that the capital of French Canada can offer. However, If you have read some of the reviews, most fall under three categories: excellent, good - but with issues, and DONT STAY HERE! Warning - bottom line, don’t stay here if you are: overly fussy/nitpicky on every minute detail of your stay, hate crowds & tourists, are disabled with limited mobility, hate noise, overly frugal, and not willing to immerse yourself in the local culture and all that Quebec has to offer. This hotel is a lovely experience to stay for a night or two, but most people have unrealistic expectations. The reality of this hotel is that it was built in stages in 1892-3 for railway and transatlantic ocean liner passengers from another time and era. It was not built to be fully accessible, nor to be all things to all people. It’s castle like appearance on the high point of the city is world famous and therefore attracts every tourist visiting Quebec City, so getting annoyed at the visiting crowds to the lobby and hotel cafes is a little ridiculous. The rooms vary in size and some are small. Remember that people back over 132 years ago were smaller than today (really!) and the rooms reflect this. Regarding accessibility, the hotel has done what it can to add ramps and elevators where there is room, but it’s a tall 19th century chateau with stairs…if you can’t handle some stairs and don’t want to stay in the lower rooms, then this isn’t the place for you (sorry to say). Bottom line - remember that you are not staying in a traditional 2024 era ultra modern hotel…it’s from a bygone era. The hotel has added all the modern amenities it can for a hotel of this vintage so staying here is a little like going back in time to a world where only the VERY privileged could stay in a place like this. Take it for what it is and not what you want.

Spend the Night in a Castle!

douglasgibbs (Chicago, Illinois) on Sep 26, 2024

Probably the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. Great location, right in the heart of Old Quebec City. While the lobby is very busy with guests and visitors, once you reach your room floor it is very quiet, in fact at times you don't even run into other guests. We used the pool twice (it is an indoor pool) and got to enjoy the sun for a bit on the outdoor terrace. Did not get the chance to eat at the hotel restaurants, but did have a drink at 1608, which I recommend. Loved the room with all its funky angles. Bed was very comfy as were the pillows. We will be back.

Terrible Stay and Terrible Meal at La Champlain

blondieitaliano (Philadelphia) on Sep 25, 2024

DO NOT stay at this hotel. It’s like Grand Central Station with tons of tourists, who are not staying there, roaming around the lobby. The lines for breakfast and to get into the bar for a cocktail are ridiculously long. Our room was tiny and the bathroom was tiny. It’s an old, rickety, very overpriced hotel. We had dinner at La Champlain restaurant inside the hotel. It was one of the worst meals of my life and it took 3.5 hours. My halibut was dry and tasted as if a salt shaker was dropped on it. The venison had no taste. It was a very average to poor overpriced meal with excruciatingly slow service. Just stay away altogether. Terrible stay and terrible meal.
