More than expected in every way!

My first visit to a Secrets resort, I was continually shocked by the level of service, beauty and attention to detail. If I have any critique it’s that the hotel website doesn’t capture the true beauty of the lush grounds. We almost passed it by because it looked like a typical hotel with a bunch of pools, but once there you’ll find yourself immersed in a tropical paradise with paths that meander the grounds, koi ponds, stunning flowers, hidden hammocks, fascinating lizards, and a canopy of palms and other trees to provide shade and privacy. We stayed in the Romance Master Suite Ocean View, which is a large corner suite. The view from the bed displayed gorgeous sunsets, while the other wall led to a furnished terrace where the ocean could be viewed from a plunge pool. The view has me forever spoiled! The suite was positioned perfectly amongst the landscaping and other buildings so that we had privacy with all of the curtains wide open. Regarding service, the staff has really bought in to a high standard of excellence. Beyond the prerequisite friendly and helpful attitudes, the leadership should win awards for how they’ve selected and trained all levels of staff to anticipate needs. Going beyond expectations with personalized levels of service made us feel special and pampered, so it was truly a place where we could unwind. The building concierge team of Fernando and Diana elevated the experience as they listened, made suggestions, and expertly handled all of the details and coordination for various special moments for our 30th anniversary celebration. Whether it was planning surprises for us at various restaurants, having the turndown service add a special rose petal display, or making sure that the maid restocked the mini bar with preferred items, Fernando is a master at his craft. Staff with a non-public roles, like landscapers and kitchen, also went beyond to greet and assist. For example, they could sense our needs and stop what they were doing to escort us (which sure beats pointing and directions). Anthony, the concierge at the Relaxation pool, is another gem. On top of excellent poolside service, he saw that my wife’s beach tote broke, so he carried it for her to and from our lounger and building, and then surprised us by working with Fernando to arrange a replacement tote. I ran out of room to praise the spa and restaurants, but they were 5 stars!!!

We loved our week at Secrets Akumal. The facility is so beautiful as you are immersed in the natural habitat like no other resort we have ever been to in Riviera Maya. The people are the real reason to go. They are authentic and genuine in their desire for you to enjoy your experience. It was such a pleasure. Be sure to spend some time at the "quiet pool" before you go. We waited until the last day and wished we wouldn't have. It's a hidden secret! The food was amazing and it never felt overcrowded. Wonderful experience!
