Disappointing Stay - Definitely Not Coming Back

mkhambatti on Jan 03, 2025

Our 5-night stay at Villa del Palmar Cancun was a letdown in almost every aspect. For a family paying for a premier ocean-view large room, the experience was anything but premium. Here's a detailed breakdown of the issues we encountered: 1. Overbooked and Poor Dining Experience: The resort advertises award-winning restaurants, but we were unable to secure reservations for any during our entire stay. It’s baffling that a hotel would overbook to the point where guests can't access its main dining options. We had to rely on room service or the mediocre buffet restaurant, which offered uninspiring and repetitive food. 2. No Towels at the Pool: We attempted an evening swim at 6:45 PM, only to find no towels available at any of the pools. Staff simply shrugged it off, saying the hotel was full. With the pool open until 9 PM, this lack of basic amenities was unacceptable and ruined our plans. 3. Aggressive Timeshare Sales Tactics: From the moment we checked in, we were subjected to constant sales pitches for a timeshare at their neighboring property. It started with a misleading explanation of our “amenities” and an invitation to a “free breakfast” that turned out to be a sales presentation. Despite declining, we were woken up at 7 AM the next day with another pushy call and hounded every time we passed through the lobby. This relentless selling was a major vacation downer. 4. Poor Room Service and Cleanliness: Room service was slow and inconsistent, often forgetting essentials like water, bed sheets, towels, or pillows. It took 5-10 minutes just to get someone on the phone, followed by an hour-long wait for food. The room itself was poorly maintained, with stains on the floor, hair in the shower, and dirty mirrors. It didn’t feel like a luxury resort at all. 5. Terrible Internet and Limited Entertainment: The internet was painfully slow, making it difficult to stay connected or stream anything. Adding to the frustration, the TVs couldn’t cast from our devices, forcing us to watch whatever limited programming was available. This was especially frustrating as a family with kids who wanted to relax in the room after a long day. 6. Building Disrepair: The resort is in desperate need of maintenance. Despite paying for a premier ocean-view room on the 7th floor, we were subjected to a loud, constant hum from a nearby utility building. Exterior painting was ongoing, and the elevator’s down button didn’t work, forcing us to go up before we could go down. These issues detracted from what should have been a comfortable stay. 7. Mediocre Food Quality: The buffet options were lackluster, with nothing standing out as remotely memorable or high-quality. It felt like they were cutting corners everywhere. Bottom Line: For a family who paid for a premier experience, this stay was a massive disappointment. Between the slow internet, limited entertainment options, aggressive timeshare pitches, and poor service, there’s nothing about this resort that justifies its price or its claim to being luxurious. We will not be returning.

Do Not Trust This Hotel! Worst Travel Experience Ever!!

L3906EUheatherd on Jan 01, 2025

Last Saturday my 10 year old daughter and I traveled down to Mexico to stay at Villa Del Palmar Cancun. I have stage 4 cancer and I just started chemo in December so it’s been a tough month for our family. I decided a mother/daughter trip to the beach would be a nice break from our challenging day to day reality. I had done extensive research and decided Villa Del Palmar Cancun would be fun for my daughter and also enjoyable, yet relaxing for me. We had a long travel day as our flight from Houston was grounded on the tarmac for 5 hours due to lightning. I had arranged transportation via the hotel and I knew they had our flight information so I assumed they would be tracking our delayed arrival time. When we exited the airport there was no driver with a sign, so I had to ask around (mind you by this time it was 9:30pm). Someone finally escorted us to us to a driver near the parking lot, and they had to look us up on their list. It took awhile for him to find my name but when he did we were on our way. We were exhausted, tired and hungry at this point, but I knew from Google Maps we should be at the hotel by 10:05pm.. perfect I thought as I had Googled what time the dinner buffet ended (10:30pm).. a quick checkin and we’ll head to the buffet asap to get some dinner. I tipped our driver $20 USD and a Villa Del Palmar staff member greeted us and asked us to follow him to a building to the right of the main entrance. At first I thought this was slightly odd as I could see the hotel lobby and check in desk, but not knowing the property, I thought maybe they had a special check in area. My daughter and I enter a room where two staff members greet us and look up my information. Then one of the men proceeds to tell me that there was a glitch in their system in the past 24 hours and they no longer have a room for us. I knew I had had a long day, and I honestly thought I was hallucinating at this point, but he went on to present me with a folder that contained information about accommodations at another one of their properties. I was in total shock but quickly looked up the other hotel.. much less nicer, smaller and FORTY minutes south of where we were. I was like, “No one could have contacted me BEFORE we left the US?? BEFORE we got on a plane?? BEFORE we drove 35 minutes north from the airport at 9:30pm?!?” My daughter started crying, I practically started crying. I could not believe it. The last thing I was going to do was drive 40 minutes back south (at 11pm at this point) and go to their sub par other hotel because of their mistake. I called the third party booking company we had used to reserve the hotel and they said that they needed to talk to a manager in order to give us a refund. I asked one of the men where the manager was and he said he was the manager (his name tag read Alex Glez), but the third party company said they needed to be able to reach him from their direct line (and not talk to him via my phone). He then tells me that the hotel booking company needs to call back in the morning when the reservations department is open. Again, I’m in utter shock. I show them my balding head, explain to them that I have cancer and that this is beyond despicable. By this point it’s 12am. The men tell me they need to go home and walk my daughter and I to the lobby. I literally look at the couches in the entranceway wondering if we’ll need to sleep there. The booking company finally gets ahold of someone (not either one of the men in the room with me as I saw them leave) and they issue the refund. Now I have to try to find last minute accommodations for us during the busiest/most expensive travel season of the year (we arrived December 28th). And because it’s after midnight, I can’t even book accommodations for that night if I tried (everything online defaulted to the next day - the 29th). So I had to call around and find us something. Let’s just say I paid 3x the price per night at our new accommodations. But because of Villa Del Palmar and their shady business practices, I didn’t feel safe being there and would’t have wanted them to get a dime of my business anyways. The booking company did tell me that they oversold the rooms.. that it wasn’t a “computer glitch” like they let on. I wanted to share this because if it can happen to us, it can happen to anyone. Pretty much the worst thing that could occur when you go on vacation. My daughter and I are still shook up from the entire experience!
