Not a five star hotel

We booked this hotel to have a five star experience but didn’t get it. It’s not all bad and may appeal more to other people, however there are certain things that need to be addressed. Also beware of the m...any Mexican extra costs that have to be paid that are not mentioned or highlighted in the travel brochure. The good bits • The food is excellent, although somewhat repetitive in the buffet restaurant • The Steak, Mexican and Asian restaurants are good, however the Italian isn’t. • The hotel is very clean, however the beach bed area does require cleaning more often. Discarded chicken bones, empty glasses, cigarette ends...you can get the picture. • The hotel staff are helpful, polite and friendly • The rooms are well equipped and the air conditioning is excellent • The night time entertainment is ok • We had a tour of the kitchen area prior to a mexican cooking lesson. The area was spotless and very efficient. Making guacamole correctly was fun. • The barbecue food served daily by the pool was delicious • Trips booked through Royalton 1to Chichen Itza, Xcaret and Isla Majores were fantastic, but really expensive. The extras were annoying, for example paying more for mandatory life jackets at a Cenote swim hole, entry was part of the tour cost, but do you really go there not to swim. It should have been included in the price. The other bits • Some the spirits for none diamond club guests are very poor, especially the Vodka and Gin • Admittedly this is a party hotel and the slogan is ‘Party Your Way’, however it’s party the way of one particular sort of it’s guests’ way and for most of the time too. Loud, brash and selfish. I didn’t enter the swim up bar pool on several days due to it being full of people who had not left it for several hours. You can imagine how much urine was in the water. • The use of personal speakers was not allowed by the pool area, however regularly, there were numerous sources of music competing with the hotel’s and only on one occasion in 14 days did the hotel put a stop to it. This is despite complaints by several guests • A quiet peaceful area by the cafe that was particularly good at night was interrupted several evenings whilst the floor was being retiled. No attempt was made by staff to mitigate this and complaints to staff were not listened to. • The mini bar in the room was stocked minimally. It was supposed to be serviced daily, however in 14 days it was only done twice. That was despite 2 complaints to customer services and several requests to room service. • Extras are eye wateringly expensive. For example, a bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin at 155 dollars. It was less than a third that cost at a minimart down the road. We didn’t have a bad holiday, however what was paid was similar to a vacation in a Jamaican 5 star hotel the previous year and that was a far better experience. Mexico seems to want to extract as much tax from it’s guests as possible. Tourist tax before you enter the country, excessive bag searches upon entry to check for the odd cigarette over the limit, I’m serious they are zealots at this, environmental tax at the hotel for each day you stay, harbour tax when you take any boat trip and amazingly enough a departure tax. All this needs to highlighted in the brochure. Excursions are very expensive and tour operators have a finger in many pies. They stop off at places they own to extract more money from you etc. Cancun is a beautiful area but there is scam around every corner. Beware. Be careful before booking this hotel. Try not to coincide with American public holidays, the place is full and excessively nosiy in all areas, even at breakfast. If you want a quiet peaceful time you need to avoid the place. You need alot of extra cash. We didn’t in Jamaica. Read up on Mexican taxes and entry allowances too. Check the time of year doesn’t conicide with excessive sea weed being washed up daily onto the beach. There were tonnes of it which were being raked into the sand. Not a good smell and a poor experience whilst swimming. I won’t be coming back to Mexico which is a shame because it has so much to offer. I'm not sure if I would visit anothrt Royalton either.

Victor was an amazing butler!!!! He answered all of my questions and handled all issues with ease. Highly recommend!!! The resort was immaculate! Level 18 did not disappoint! Even downtown is close!! I wil...l definitely vacation here again.
