Hard to get fed

Overall the resort was nice, if you have visited resorts previously you will find this one to be as good or better overall for facilities and overall care. Two biggest downsides were the restaurants (that did serve great food) took 30-45 minutes to get into each night, and another 1.5-2 hours to get served. Allow for 2.5 to 3 hours each night to get fed. The other downside is that the majority of the pool edge is cabanas that you must purchase if you want to use, and each cabana comes with an addition 2 chairs. This leaves only approx. 1/2 the chairs available for free use, and those are behind the cabanas, so you cant even see the pool from where you sit. We were not able to get any seating within the 5 days we were there, even getting up and getting out there by 7AM they would all be reserved. Our stuff had to be left on the cement while we swam. The shame was 1/2 the cabanas were not even getting booked so alot of the pool edge went un-used. its all inclusive, but this all inclusive experience doesn't come with seating. If you want pool side seating you are likely going to have to pay 100USD per day additional.
Good experience

First, let me start by saying that after reading some of the reviews here I was a little concerned about our Thanksgiving visit. However, our concerns quickly disappeared. Here are a few reflections. 1) This is an older resort. I would not consider the condition of the resort to be 5 star but for us, it was very comfortable and we would definitely return. The interior in some of the rooms may need a little touching up. But it was always clean and well stocked. 2) We had a swim out with a butler. After this experience, we will ALWAYS have a Butler. Butlers at this resort work in pairs. That way they are able to have a "life" outside their job, covering for the other butlers day off. We asked if they shared tips and were told, yes. Betty was our Butler -- fantastic ... her partner was on vacation the week we were there. The couple traveling with us also had a swim-out with a butler. Their butlers, Devian and Andre, did things for us when Betty was not there. They, too were excellent. They checked on us numerous times during the day. And one day when they couldn't find it, they called us several times (we had left the Betty phone with our things on the beach so we didn't hear it). But, overall the service she provided along with the other two butlers was OUTSTANDING. 3) The swim out was nice. We only used it one day. When returning we will opt for a room with an ocean view on the higher floors. We think that experience would be a better fit for us. The primary reason is the privacy issues. People can walk by and look at the swim out ... and if curtains are not closed, right into the room. Also, if others are enjoying their swimout there are times when it spills over to yours, privacy can be a challenge. 4) We understand this is a nonsmoking resort. We were told that several times when we inquired. The issue is that people often don't adhere to that. We experienced individuals smoking on the beach a couple times. The issue was that someone in our group has lung/asthma issues so it made it hard on them. This is also the same for the swimout. Several times during our stay neighbors were enjoying cigars, cigarettes and other things on their patio to the swimout. It is not our favorite smell and it drifted. The biggest challenge is that employees were reluctant to say anything. It was very apparent it was happening as drinks were delivered to the pation area across the swimout, pool attendants were able to walk by, etc. Perhaps asking employees to say something when they see it happening would be a good thing for the management to emphasize. This is also one of the reasons for us opting out of the swimout in the future. When we left we mentioned it to Betty. She said she wished we had told her. So in the end, we probably should have mentioned it to her rather than preferred club front desk. 5) As preferred club, butler service guests we got housekeeping daily. They restocked the in room drink cooler and snacks basket daily. We mentioned we like a couple things and they were VERY good about restocking those items. We even mentioned we like a particular beverage and not only did we see more in our cooler, they also were placed in our beach cooler by Betty! 6) Beaches -- wow! As a preferred club you have access to all the beaches at St. James, Wild Orchid and also the Breathless beach. Preferred guests also have different color towels as there are beaches only preferred can use. That said, mgmt might need to empower beach employees to be stern with guests who are not preferred, if that is a perk. A couple times we saw couples firmly say they were not leaving and the beach attendants did not know what to do. Some guests might be a little irratated. We did hear comments from a couple others on the beach regarding that. Perhaps reviewing it with employees might be a consideration. I know it is difficult and just wish people would respect the parameters under which they booked. But, it did not affect our experience. Our butlers reserved chairs for us, got the towels, and provided an iced cooler everyday. We were always good to go. 7) Beach drink service. FYI -- tip your servers! I understand it is not required but ... our service was excellent! They got to know us and were always there as we finished our drinks. We really were impressed! 8) Food. There was lots of it. The breakfast and lunch buffet were good. Lots of choices and options. There wasn't anything that stood out, but it was good and a great option. Jerk chicken our group that was really good. We got it by the main pool in wild orchid - a gentleman was there cooking it. They said it was excellent. We very much enjoyed the Italian restaurant. My fettucini was excellent. The beef tenderloin top notch. The appetizers were good. I would have liked to try all the dishes but was way too much food. The fact that you can order all of them ... wow! We were not fans of the Jamaican buffet - but that was just not our type of food. Heard many say it was good. We loved the Hibachi restaurant. Our chefts were so entertaining -- especiall Ramone (like the lettuce). The rice was very good and the meats were good, too. Overall we really liked it. You need a reservation. There are only two chef tables and it can be hard to get into. Our butlers handled this but I did see many people waiting awhile, and some were told it was full for the evening. The pizza at one of the spots by the main wild orchid pool was really good. It takes a bit of time for them too cook it so sometimes you might have to wait but it was a good bite. 9) Preferred Club Lounge - People were amazing! Food always out! We primarily tasted the sweet goodies but the other things looked really good. Loved to talking to the bar tenders at the bar! 10) Rooftop bar at Breathless - the view was spectacular. The food was good. The servers very nice. Not sure I would go out of my way to be here for the food but the view was just wow! It is small. Preferred Club Guests at Wild Orchid can get reservations there. Our butler secured this for us. Had a cart waiting to take us to Breathless and was there within minutes to pick us up after we called on the Betty phone and let her know we wer ready! 11) Snorkeling. The waters and the life in the sea were breathtaking. The water was crystal clear. Looks just like the photos. I recommend you bring your own snorkeling equipment. They only have it for use if you do the guided experience. Would I go again? Yes! We went for 5 nights. I might go for 4 nights instead but maybe 5 nights. When we were there the weather was on and off ... in terms of the ocean ... so many of the excursions were cancelled. But I highly recommend the free snorkeling experience that happens a couple times a day. Welll worth it. We may try to return to experience the excursions as we did not leave the property. It was beautiful.
