Been to Puerto Plata before, would not ever recommend this resort
Storyteller754969 (Ajax, Canada) on Nov 16, 2024
First time I have ever been sick in Caribbean. Stomach upset, going #2 alot. Night club never opened up to.piblic as it clashed with the staff entertainment at nights within 100 feet. The food okay, too much repetitive dishes. No bar near the beach. Invited to VIP breakfast, the food was worse and service worse then the buffet. I would not ever recommend this resort. I have been to Puerto Plata before and had a much better time.
Senator Puerto Plata Loved by Canadians.

This is our second vacation (November 2024) at this resort. We also stayed for two weeks in January of 2023. The cliental is made up of people from all over the world, Europe, Great Briton, USA and Canada. There are newly weds, families with children, seniors and individuals. This is a popular resort with Canadians. The overall majority of vacationers were from Canada. We had conversations with many vacationers who informed us they have returned a number of times. Diners enjoy three al-a-carte restaurants, a buffet, 24 hour sports bar, coffee shop, pizza shop, pool/beach restaurant, ice cream store and beach bar-b-que. The buffet has the usual variety of cuisine that serves food choices from Europe, North America and the Carribean. The al-a-carte restaurants feature Italian, Japanese and Steakhouse. Bookings are done at the lobby. It can be busy at times trying to reserve seating, especially when the line up is long. The beach has soft brown sand and shade is provided by palm trees. There was never a problem finding lounge chairs, although our first trip in January it was an issue. The Atlantic ocean waves break at the reef and roll onto shore. The current is very strong. There is seldom any sea week to deal with on the beach. Amber Cove is adjacent to the resort where cruise ships enter port. It makes for a good photo opportunity, especially at night when all the ship lights are on. The pool has a swim up bar, volleyball area and jacuzzi pools. Shade is provided by a few umberllas. There is a lot more sunny areas on the pool deck. The rooms have standard furnishings but some renovations are due, especially the bathrooms. It never impacted our stay at all. Apparently some of the buildings have had make overs lately. The resort seems to be making upgrades one building at a time. The Playabachata Resort is adjacent to the Senator. Guests staying at the Senator can use the facilities at the Bachata also. There is an Ultimate Leisure Club upgrade available. Not certain what the additional cost would be, but supposedly there is upgraded rooms, private pool and restaurant and high end liquor. Some of the servers that were friendly, cheerful, accommodating and seemed to enjoy their job was Anna, at the coffee shop and sports bar. She has taken English classes to learn the language. Gabriel at the buffet and al-a-carte restaurants. He is everywhere. I don't think he ever sleeps. Julian, Bibianna, Angela, Juana and Arisleyda at the buffet, always smiling and providing fast service. Angela and Arisleyda gave us warm hugs like we were family. My wife and I will miss them. Our friend Francis from our first visit in January remembered us and was glad to see us again. The Dominican people employed at this resort work very hard to make your vacation a restful, joyful and relaxing holiday. Please be generous and offer them a tip for their service. There are only two issues worth mentioning beside the needed room renovations. Fresh beach towels were difficult to acquire. We had to wait two days before we could exchange towels. The buffet did have a good variety for breakfast but it did seem to get a little repetitive over the course of the week. We had a great week at the Senator, mainly because of how we were treated by the staff.
