Terrible customer service at the Senator.

stephanietA5886FG on Jul 20, 2024

My family and I spent 4 days at the Senator from the 4-8th. We were a party of 10 under 3 different reservations. I have been to all-inclusive resorts all over the Caribbean and Mexico, so I expect customer service that is uniform all over these types of resorts. Upon arrival, we were not greeted with any welcome drinks or water. Check-in was smooth but our rooms were not ready which we knew would be the case. I immediately went to the area to make dinner reservations and was met with the first obstacle of the trip. They only have three restaurants and I was told since we are only there for 4 days we are only entitled to 1 reservation. This has never been the case anywhere I have been, resorts do their best to try to get you into every single one of their specialty restaurants. The Senator was so exclusive with their Steakhouse and essentially refused to give us a reservation while we were there. We went several times and tried and spoke to several different people and no matter what, they would not accommodate even a party of 2. The funny thing is every time we walked by the steak house the tables were always empty. My husband went in to speak to the wait staff there and they refused to sit us without reservations but could not speak for why all the tables were empty. We did eat at the Italian and Japanese restaurants and the food was inconsistent. Some things were tasty but desserts were bad. The fried ice cream at the Japanese restaurant was not even ice cream it was a ball of some kind of dough fried in some more dough. Thankfully, they have an ice cream shop that is open until 11 every day and you can have dessert. The buffet was fine, we always found something to eat. We are Dominican and Ecuadorian so the abundance of Latin food that was served was fine for us but I could see how it could be a problem for their guests of other ethnicities. The rooms are very outdated. Our AC worked fine thankfully since Puerto Plata is so hot and humid. The beds were comfortable but our rooms had no soap or shampoo. I asked several times for it to be replenished and eventually had to pay $10 at the gift shop to buy shampoo and conditioner. The fridge was filled daily with bottled water and soda, no Presidente, which in my experience in DR was always available in the fridge. The rooms were cleaned well daily. and WiFi was fine. However, all the outlets were oddly shaped and required adapters that we had to get from the front desk or else we could not charge our phones. The front desk did not charge us for the adapter but they charged my sister-in-law $3. As far as customer service goes this is where the Senator loses all its points. There is no staff around the pool or the beach taking drink or food orders. Again, this is standard practice at an all-inclusive resort. If you are at the beach for the morning (and why wouldn't you be, the beach is gorgeous) you are completely on your own for beverages. You have to walk back to the pool bar to get a beverage or be prepared with your own Stanley or hydroflask, which thankfully we were. We filled one with water and the other with beer. I have never been to a resort where there is no staff available for guests. At the bars, the bartenders were okay, not very personable, or social which is fine. We took care of them anyway before we left. The entertainment team was great! My husband won several competitions and did some karaoke and they called him Bad Bunny all week, which was cute. The foam party was a lot of fun and lasted a lot longer than other foam parties I have been to. We had a good time because we can have a good time wherever we go but that does not take away from the fact that the Senator simply does not meet the standard of customer service that is required of an all-inclusive resort. My husband is from Santiago and going to Puerto Plata is such an easy trip to take but we will not be going back to the Senator.

I love the entertainment team so much!! Baby, Dora, Skinny, Speedy, Monkey Black, Shampoo, Mosquito are all so kind. Love dancing with them!!! I also love the workers at the sushi restaurant especially Angel he’s very kind and love the food! The beach, the pool and the rooms are super nice and everything is really clean. Everyone is really friendly. The parties at night are so fun and the activities during the day are also very entertaining. Love playing the games or just learning how to dance. Great experience, it’s my second year here and I’m so glad I came back.
