Not for me

Bill B on Mar 15, 2025

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars: my daughter loved the trip, but I'm never going back so I gave it a 3. We stayed a full week and were able to visit most of the restaurants and experience what the resor...t has to offer. This rating is based upon the value for the price. The grounds and beach were beautiful. They manage to integrate nature and wildlife into the experience without leaving you eaten alive by bugs. The larger room at the maya was perfect for us and very comfortable. The housekeeping, landscaping, and cleanliness of the property was top notch. That is what impressed me the most, but that also ensures that the pictures come out great, which is what drives bookings, so I guess it makes sense. Their kids-zone area was great and my daughter loved it. The entertainment and activities available were varied, family friendly, and kept us and our daughter entertained. The waterslides were centrally located and we hit them a few times but they get boring quickly. Overall this met expectations. And now the reasons I won't be returning. The food and drinks were bad. As a frame of reference, I would rather go to Chili's than eat at any of the restaurants or buffet's here and the drinks there would be better too. Also as a frame of reference I don't like Chili's and won't eat there. There were a few cocktails and bites of food that exceeded that level and were enjoyable but it was 90% worse. It's chronic cost-cutting. First, the expensive ingredients are bad...low quality meat, frozen seafood. I was unable to eat any of the seafood outside the shrimp. The lobster was flavorless and tough and everything else was fishy. Second, the staff clearly didn't have food preparation experience. Training issues were also evident with the bartenders as well: few of them could make simple cocktails well (The fishtank bar in the lindo lobby was the only location I had good consistent drinks). The recipes were awful. Many of the dishes were doomed from the start even if a talented chef prepared them (tho they would have known how to fix them). This is the part that makes the least sense since you can simply google good recipes. Lastly, they seemed to have outsourced food preparation or at least prepare many things in a central location (many locations have the exact same things...such as desserts, guacamole, sauces, ice cream). Given that they aren't paying for people that can cook this makes sense, but the recipes are still awful (the exception was the pastries/cakes which were mostly good so I suspect they had a deal with a regional bakery or something). The irony of these cost cutting efforts is that they drive higher waste since the guests were having to discard under/overcooked and inedible food and try more things to figure out what was edible that night. Most of the time we couldn't eat much of what we ordered at a restaurant and had to head to the buffet. The steakhouse was the best, but it was reservation only, they would only seat like 4-5 tables leaving the restaurant 60% empty. Overall, if you drink straight liquor or something simple like rum&coke, gin&tonic and care more about quantity over quality of food you should be fine here. We are likely done with all-inclusives after this.

Emiliano was so fun with the kiddos!! Had the best time dancing. Definitely a fun time! We had such a fun night overall. I would recommend the Iberostar as a great resort for families for fun and activiti...es. We enjoyed the pool and all the activities.
