Valentin El Patriarca - average trip

My husband and I travelled for a week May 18-25 and had the upgrade to Alegance as part of our booking. We travel to Cuba every year and know exactly what to expect when traveling here in regard to food etc, we go to Cuba for the great people and the beautiful beaches. I need to start off by saying the resort was completely dead during the week we were there, maybe 100 people total if that. I had ready about lack of lounge chairs around the pool and beach area and we certainly did not face that issue, we would show up at the beach at 10:30 and could still find a palapa and chairs everyday without any issues. As for the main pool we never hung out there, no one was ever around and no entertainment activities or music. Our afternoons were spent at the Alegance pool with Roberto as our bartender. There is no shade at either of the pools, some umbrellas available at the main pool but at the Alegance only if you are able to get a chair under one of the big palm trees. Food: To start off we did not starve but it was pretty repetitive throughout our week, what we did have was decent/good. Not sure if it was a result of their low season and not preparing as many options or the fact that they do have shortages and work with what they have available. Our first night we ate at the buffet (super hot, no AC), minimal options available but the cooking stations had pasta being made along with pork and chicken. Breakfast - we ate at the Alegance restaurant everyday, had freshly made eggs (fried, omelet or scrambled) everyday but the only sides or add-ons were continental style with bread, cereal, cheese, cold cuts and fruit. Lunch - ate at the beach snack bar (also 24hr snack bar), Hamburger, ham & cheese sandwich, pasta with tomato sauce, some days hot dogs. (no condiments) Dinner - had a la carte every night, food was good at each (Italian, Carribbean, Gourmet or Alegance) however the main meal options at all of them was Pork, chicken or fish, Italian also had pizza. The starter soups were all really good. At the Alegance dinner one night was lobster, pork and fish platter (wasn't too bad). Bars/Drinks: Typically the coffee in Cuba is fantastic, cappucinos and all, I found it was hot and miss at this place. Also some days there was no coffee, they ran out. Tried Mike's cafe on our 2nd day and heard they too had run out of coffee, never made it back another day. Beer not available some days at some of the bars and the rest of the drinks were hit and miss on what they could make. Could never go wrong with the traditional rum and coke. Our room was great, spacious and AC worked well (Rm 4622), thank you to Blanca for helping us with the room request on the 2nd floor. Entertainment was in the lobby at night, no shows in the theater. Every night something different, singers, sax players, band, etc. By 11pm not main people left in the lobby, the disco was also open at that time (never tried it to provide input). Overall we had a decent stay, very quiet but also relaxing in this case. Met some great people at the Alegance pool who we hung out with every day. Would I return to this resort, that would depend on the deal available. If it was a low cost for a getaway I would consider it.
