If you are affected by a serious communicable disease, you may be eligible, upon request, for a refund of the unused portion of your ticket - including unused fees and services - to your original form of payment, if your itinerary includes a U.S. flight and you choose not to travel.
What is a serious communicable disease?
Under U.S. regulations, a serious communicable disease is one that can cause significant health impacts—such as breathing problems, organ damage, neurological issues, or even death—and spreads easily through casual contact in enclosed spaces like an aircraft cabin.
This includes transmission through everyday interactions like sitting near someone, shaking hands, speaking, or touching shared surfaces.
Examples:
- Not serious: The common cold spreads easily but typically doesn't cause severe health issues.
- Serious: SARS spreads easily and can lead to severe illness or death.
If you’re unsure whether a condition may qualify, we recommend checking with a medical professional or health authority.
Refund eligibility due to a Serious Communicable Disease
You may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of your ticket, including unused fees and services, if you choose not to travel due to a serious communicable disease, and one of the following applies:
- You are protecting your health or the health of others.
- There is an entry restriction in place to, from or within the United States.
- You are required to quarantine for more than 50% of your itinerary at your origin or final destination (excluding travel days).
If you were advised not to travel to protect your health due to a declared public health emergency:
You may qualify for a refund of the unused portion of your ticket, including unused fees and services, if:
- You purchased your ticket before the public health emergency was declared for your origin or destination.
- You are scheduled to travel during the declared emergency.
- There is no U.S. Government determination stating that a medical form is not required.
In this case, you must:
- Submit a Serious Communicable Disease Medical Information Form completed by a licensed medical professional.
- Ensure the form is dated after the emergency was declared and within one year of your scheduled departure.
- Submit the form within 30 days of your scheduled travel date.
If a licensed medical professional advised you not to travel due to a serious communicable disease:
You may qualify for a refund of the unused portion of your ticket, including unused fees and services, if:
- You were advised not to travel, and your itinerary includes flights to, from or within the United States, including connecting flights.
- A public health emergency does not need to be declared in this case.
You must:
- Submit a Serious Communicable Disease Medical Information Form within 30 days of your scheduled departure.
If you choose to travel, consult with your medical professional before departure. Guests who appear unwell at the airport may be subject to a medical assessment at the discretion of WestJet airport agents or cabin crew.
If you’re cancelling your trip due to a serious communicable disease and are taking steps to protect your health or the health of others, a Serious Communicable Disease Medical Form must be completed.
