Thank you, you are the best!

It was our second time to Tropical but third time at Barcelo Maya Grand Resort. Again, what a service to our allergic kid. The staff was all perfect and kind. Big shout out to all the Capitan, especially t...he one in the morning at the Colonial Buffet. He was making sur that her favorite plate was prepared every morning without us even asking for it. Special thanks to Julio and Hector that were especially great for us. Thanks to the life guard at the water park (Colonial) for treating my daughter's small injury on her leg. The only thing is the room that had a mildew smell. And a lack of chairs at the pools and beach. But we managed it by using our towels on the beach or on the grass. It was ok for us. Thanks again! What a great week.
2nd time returning to the Barcelo Maya Tropical (Colonial). Paradise found again!

This was our second time going to the Barcelo Maya Grand Resort during Quebec's March break. This resort is huge and gorgeous, and just so beautiful. It is a tropical paradise! We stayed on the Tropical Se...ction this time in March 2025. In 2022 we were on the Colonial side. If you are wondering what the differences are, they are basically mirror images of each other, but the Tropical has the theatre and buffets on their side, so you don't walk as far to get to food or shows if staying at the Tropical. Otherwise pools and beaches are the same, and you will have access to Tropical, Colonial, Beach, and Caribé sections. I prefer the quieter pools on the Colonial side. There were more drinkers and it was louder at the swim up bar on the Tropical side, so we stayed to the shadier and calmer Colonical pools in the late afternoon. It seemed like several families felt the same way, as most of the kids were on the Colonial side too. Much easier and faster to get a drink at the Colonial bar as no crowds. I love the architecture of the buildings and the landscaping of the grounds and pool area. So lush, and green, with plenty of palm trees everywhere. This is good, because you won't get a lounge chair at the pools until later on in the afternoon. There just aren't any unless you are willing to get up early. Sleep is more important so don't bother. Luckily there are grassy green patches around the pools and some "grassy islands" also, so we just put towels down there. We had better luck at the beach getting a chair. If you know this in advance, you won't be disappointed. Also loads of palm trees along the promenade and all over the beach so you can find shade and not turn into a red roasted lobster. From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. I had requested 2 double beds (note that they do not have queens) and 1 sofa bed, so that our family of 3 could each have our own bed and sleep comfortably, which was honoured. Good thing, as last time we went, there was one bed for all 3 of us (a king) and so I took the sofa and my husband and 11 year old son at the time shared the bed. My son is almost 14 now so he's as big and tall as a young man, so good luck sharing a double bed if you have big kids, teens. The room was clean, we had everything we needed, and every day the maid came and restocked. If we needed specific things like extra coffee or shampoo, we just wrote a note with our requests. The water bottle man was very sweet too, and don't forget to ask him for peanuts, mixed nuts, and chips because he has those too, in his drawer on his cart, but won't leave them unless you ask specifically. I really can't think of anything negative to say, everything was great, and easy. I suppose I could complain about the AC unit which made an awful high pitched whirring sound if put on Level 3, but on Level 1 and 2, it kept the room cool and just sounded like normal wind. I normally like to put it on High to drown out any snoring, but could not use this function this trip. About the food: The FOOD is excellent, I ate super healthy all week, lots of veggies and seafoods, and no one got sick. The meals at the 4 course restaurants were all really excellent, we had the chance to go to 5 different ones during our 9 night stay. The only disappointing thing I ate were lamb chops at the Seafood restaurant, and unfortunately my piece was nothing but connective tissue and only was able to get a few tiny morsels of actual tender meat off it it. Maybe I was unlucky, or maybe you should skip the lamb chops too. Customer service: From the lobby, to the restaurants, to the pool hut, and the cleaners and water distributors in the hallways, everyone was so friendly and we were always greeted with an Hola and a smile. The Beach: There are so many sections, so you can set up wherever you want. The edges were kept clean, no seaweed during our 8 days, except on 1 day the sea was red flagged and waves more rough, are there was a large accumulation of seaweed that had washed upon the shore. Each section has a nice sandy bay area, then rocks, then another sandy area, then more rocks as you walk along. Do not walk on the rocks! There are sea urchins (black and red ones). Also careful when you walk barefoot along the edge of the shore as I did. I came across a lone sea urchin who had swayed far from his family in the rocks, and so used my sandals to pick it up and fling him back to his rocks. What we loved: Between the Palace and Tropical side, in front of the leopard statue, snorkelling with the giant sea turtles. It was really cool! I was just floating, my son was snorkelling and they kept popping up to the surface for air, so I so lots, even without any special gear. Tons of fish too. They were very curious about my bum and toes floating in the water. Tickle tickle. If you like snorkelling, or just swimming with fish, walk out to the quai in the Beach Caribé section. TONS of fish there! Entire schools! People feed them bananas so they hang out there all day, and you'll see an entire wall of fish. If you want to get on a catamaran (3 people max + the guide) then you need to line up and book it at 9AM when the aquatic counter opens. Same for the pedal water bikes. We did both, it was fun, and free. We also played mini-golf, which is outside of Strikers Bowling (at the mall) and saw dozens of iguanas, all sizes and colours, and a turtle at the pond also, during our mini-golf (free.) It's too bad they charge so much for bowling and the Go Karts. No one was using them. The GoKarts were $20 USD for 1 person (so for us Canadians that is $30 CAD) for 10 minutes. With 3 employees standing around and no one to serve, as it was too hot 36C and too expensive, you would think they could have given us a deal as an incentive. If they want to actually get people to use them, (same goes for bowling alley), try lowering the price and offering longer, like 20 minutes, especially when there is no one there! Other than the high priced extras for those, and lack of pool loungers before 4pm, everything is all-inclusive and wonderful. I would go back a 3rd time as the pool areas are so lovely, the beaches great too, food excellent, and units kept clean and grounds tidy. Friendly staff also! If you can afford it, book it without worrying about anything and have fun! If you want to save $1000 X number of guests, book it 10 months in advance, like we did. I noticed the price jumped with AirTransat package by $1000 per person more, for 1st week in March (9 nights) when i checked this winter. Otherwise take the kids out of school off season when it is easier less expensive. Our Montreal QC winter March break is crazy expensive to go to Mexico.
