Happy place

tami t (White Bear Lake, Minnesota) on Mar 15, 2025

We have been coming to the Barcelo since 2001, we have brought friends and family, an absolutely love it. It was disappointing not being able to find a chair on the beach.Unless you were up at the crack of dawn. And the plastic glasses for drinks other than the pool ,I felt we're kind of tacky, jose pacab is still the best and friendliest bartender, you have. And treats us like family year after year are flora delgado at the buffet. Natividad Martinez made her eggs to order every morning, with a beautiful smile, and Eusebio Flores. I really enjoyed the Mariachi band playing at our table this year as well . I cannot wait for next february. Wish I could afford two times a year. Please get more chairs for the beach

Excellent 5 Star Resort

TravellingBlonde902 (Kingston, Canada) on Mar 15, 2025

Heads up! Canadian here! This is a lengthy review. I appreciated all the reviews I read before coming here, and want to give back. As an avid lifelong traveller, from the time that I was an infant through to my age 41.92, and keeping an open mind to all the fantastic, good, mediocre and and “could use some work” experiences; these are my opinions and honest review. We traveled to Barcelo Maya “Tropical” with a family of 5. Ages 54, nearly 42, 26, nearly 19, and nearly 16. We reserved 3 rooms (2 double and 1 single), from March 5 through 12. Starting with our transfer from the airport (Air Transat), it was a little confusing as the app said one section and platform, and then we were directed to a different section and platform. This was very minor and not worth mentioning (in my opinion). However for the sake of families with smaller children, I can see how this may cause added stress if one wasn’t prepared for minor hiccups, as with any trip. Mind you, this part is not a review of Barcelo itself, as our transfer was arranged through Air Transat, which i must add was a fantastic choice for purchasing our all inclusive vacation from. Truly not a big deal! The beer on the bus are $100 pesos, ~$7.20 Canadian, or ~$5 American. The provided bus ride from Cancun airport to Barcelo Maya Tropical was a few minutes shy of 2 hours. Once we found our bus, it was an additional 20 minute wait before departing. We had 2 stops before our destination. Check in only took 15 minutes maximum, as there were only 2 families, and two check in attendants. Rooms: We requested to have rooms close to each other and all in the same building. We had rooms 7619 (3rd floor, which we specifically asked for), 7513 (2nd floor), and 7516 (2nd floor) in Veracruz building. Our rooms were conveniently close and we loved our location away from the lobby and theatre. Room 7619, where my partner and I stayed, was fantastic. No complaints with humidity, room service, cleanliness, mold, etc. We did use a damprid bag both in the bathroom and the closet, which were both 2/3 full by the end of our week stay. We left $100 pesos a day for the cleaner and $100 pesos in the fridge every second day. We received 3-4 bottles of water a day and 3-4 corona (we left a note if we wanted 4 beer and they would leave this for us. We did not drink any pop, as we are not pop drinkers). Room 7513, no complaints with cleanliness or humidity, however the tv was “broken” and wouldn’t turn off. There was no remote, nor any buttons on the tv, and the stand was way too heavy to move in order to unplug it. This being said, the son that was in this room didn’t care and didn’t want us to contact maintenance, which is on us - therefore this is not a complaint, as maintenance would have come to correct this had we have asked. Room 7516, HUMID! This room was dripping in condensation. We went to the front desk and notified them. They sent a room attendant as well as maintenance right away (10 minutes tops). The sheets were changed so they were dry and maintenance did something with the air exchange/air conditioner, and checked that the patio door was closed (it was). Whatever maintenance did, it worked… for one day. We were told that if the problem persisted to come back to the front desk and they would move the boys to a different room. However the boys didn’t want to move rooms, therefore this is on us and not a complaint, as Barcelo staff was more than willing to accommodate the issue. None of us saw bugs in the room, or on the beds. Room attendants did an excellent job keeping rooms clean for us (all boys!). The mattresses were very comfortable. We doubled up on our pillows, as they were quite thin. I am very picky with betting and pillows, and this worked fine for me, and I slept very well. Food - we ate at the Tropical buffet the first night and had excellent service and food. We then ate at Kyoto, as Tokyo was unavailable for our stay due to prior bookings. This was a fantastic meal! We then ate at Marenostrum (seafood), as Mexico Lindo was unavailable. We were feeling very concerned about this choice, however we did not regret it one bit. The food and service was also amazing. We then ate at La Tratorria and again amazing. Then Santa Fe… this was not so great, and also had a very strange experience with the staff. First, upon seating, an attendant came to our table and asked our names, asked if our experience at the restaurant (we hadn’t been served food yet), and if we had any complaints. We all stated that we had no complaints, and our stay thus far has been incredible “Viva Mexico!”. But then we got our food, and it was far less than mediocre, not to mention that it took more than an hour to get our food after ordering (it was almost 11:00pm). One of the boys ordered the lamb chops, medium rare. One was blue, one was medium rare, one was over cooked. I ordered the ribeye, this was like cardboard. My partner and the other boys ordered tenderloin, medium rare, and these were cook through solid… this was truly a disappointment, as this was the #1 restaurant we were all looking forward too. The dips that were served for our steaks and potatoes were sooo delicious though, however they were removed from the table shortly after we received our meals, while we were still eating, as it was after 11:00pm by this time. We all felt rushed and like we were a nuisance… and the questionnaire from the attendant a few moments before designated as an extremely bizarre experience. This is probably the only real complaint any of us had. All of our meals were scheduled for 9:00pm, 9:30pm, and 9:45pm. We were unable to get earlier times, and I had gone to guest services to reserve our A La Carts as soon as we arrived, after check in. Again, this isn’t a big deal because we are all older. The only problem with this is that we missed 4 nights of theatre due to conflicting supper times. The buffet at Tropical was fantastic. There was a gluten free section, vegetarian section, and also a kids’ station. The food had lots of flavour and so much to choose from. We did venture over to the beach buffet one night, and didn’t like it as much. We also ate lunch mostly at the Tropical pool grill which we enjoyed. We ventured over to Captain Morgan’s one day, and we were not disappointed with that one. It was pretty good. The chair wars are 100% real. However I don’t find this any worse at Barcelo than any other resort that I’ve ever been to. Humans are a breed of their own, and this is not “Barcelo’s” issue. This is a human decency issue, and therefore “people need to do better”. We had a couple come over to us on the beach that saw us laying on our towels in the sand and stated that they were leaving and brought us to their chairs ?? if you’re reading this; thank you from our family to yours. We need more humans like you! As you can see from the above, our “complaints” really are superficial and should not ruin your vacation. If the above are things that will ruin your vacation, I’m afraid you may not be satisfied anywhere you go. The resort is massive compared to other resorts. There is so much to do! There is a Mexican market, a mall, a 24 hour sports bar (Strikers) that has its own buffet of pub food, bowling alley, huge tv, and more. Free 18 mini putt before 4pm (I think). It was free when we went, however I know that later in the day/evening you have to pay. There is a water park with a flow rider (surfing) for an extra cost, we didn’t use this. Same as the go carts at extra cost, we didn’t use this either. There are water sports on the resort: catamaran (free if you get there at 8-8:30am the day you want to go and book your time for 4 people). There are also other things for extra cost, such as jet ski. Dressel Divers, on resort, offer scuba diving lessons as well as snorkel and scuba excursions. I highly suggest bringing your own snorkel gear and head out about 30’ from the Jaguar statue between the Tropical and Palace and swim with the wild sea turtles. This is definitely a highlighted life experience for me! We also saw stingrays and many species of colourful tropical fish. We walked across the road to Eco Park Kantun Chi. It was roughly $97 Canadian per person, as we did the guided grotto experience (underground river cave). This was a cool experience, however if you’ve ever been to Luray Caverns in Virginia then this may not fascinate you as much (no one in my party, except me, has been there, and therefore they were all amazed with the Kantun Chi experience). I definitely wasn’t dissatisfied, it really was neat. However I’m wondering if the cenote experience with the Chichen Itza excursion is amazing. If anyone has feedback on this, I’m very curious! As we were only here for 7 days, and had a 5.5 hour flight plus 2 hour bus ride, we didn’t want to commit to the 12 hour Chichen Itza excursion. We also ate at the restaurant at Kantun Chi and really enjoyed our meal. Our server was super friendly and great. We also took the free excursion into Playa Del Carmen. None of us were really interested in the first stop - the jewelry store. The second stop was tequila tasting, which we all enjoyed quite a bit. Third stop was 5th St in Playa Del Carmen. We walked a little way down 5th St to a restaurant called El Tacoyote and really enjoyed this experience, from the environment to the food and everything in between. Although after we ate, we didn’t have much time for shopping. Should we come back here, we will hire a taxi (located on the resort by the main entrance) to take us back so that we can explore more. The wildlife at this resort is the best I’ve seen yet. We saw a coatie around 8:30 am on our walk from Veracruz building to the buffet. So many species of iguanas - black spiny and green. I can’t remember the other type that’s there. We saw anoles, geckos and basilisks. There was also a colony of giant land crabs (not sure the species) that burrow underground. I even saw a tarantula on the walkway. I’m not much of a nightlife person, however the boys were. There is a club on the resort called Jaguars that is quite eventful at night. Ladies dancing on suspended platforms and all! This is an 18+ adult club only, and they are very diligent with checking bracelets. My nearly 16 year old son was turned away, and he looks close to 20 (6’2, 250 lb football player with facial hair). The Tropical pool always had afternoon games and water aerobics. The recreation staff were very entertaining and great. Keep in mind that you’re going to get ignorant people anywhere you go. Just ignore them and focus on making amazing memories with those you are travelling with. Overall we had an amazing experience. We don’t often like to visit the same place twice, as travelling, exploring, seeing new sights, and experiencing different cultures is something we enjoy, however the consensus between the 5 of us is unanimous, and we all want to come back to this resort and experiencing the rest of the things we didn’t get to experience. We were here for 7 days, and wish we had booked 10 days. I hope this review serves everyone well and that you have an amazing time at this resort, just as we did!
