Good experience for the cost

We traveled with our family of 4 (2 adults/ 2 kids 5 & 8). The highlights for the resort during our visit were definitely the service and the amenities for the kids. We had exceptional service from Christian at the buffet, Victor the server at the pool bars, Leon and Armando in the lobby lounge and Jesus the bellman. Each one of these guys made sure that we were taken care of and I appreciate that they made a point to get to know their guests. The kids amenities were excellent. The water slides were so much fun, just wish they opened a little earlier. We only used the kids club one time but really enjoyed it. The putt putt golf, arcade/table sports and cinema were a hit. The kids loved that there was even a special menu for them at the bar. The kids had a blast but I did notice that some of the amenities were pretty run down. The soccer field was asphalt and no fence to block a ball from rolling out to the water slides, the basketball courts had fences that were blown over or broken (not even sure if they were open) we never saw the zip line or climbing wall open or in use. Some things that will make us consider a different resort next time are the overall food selection/quality, the condition of the resort and a more useful/inviting beach area. Food- we always found something but we’re quite underwhelmed with the selection at the restaurants and buffet. The coffee bar was so disappointing and would have loved an actual breakfast/coffee option other than the buffet. It was difficult to figure out which restaurant was open when and at what time etc. In our opinion the Italian restaurant was the best and we ended up there more than once. Beach- All the pictures of the resort show such a well kept, inviting beach with multiple cabanas and a bar right at the steps… that is not the case. There were probably ten pop up tent style cabanas, trash on the beach, the wash stations were full of sand and defeated the purpose of washing the sand off your feet and the beach bar wasn’t open. Resort condition- It was ok. The room we had smelled very musty. I know with humidity it’s hard to control that but it was bad. The AC was not great. Lots of pool chairs broken. As mentioned before there were multiple kids amenities that were run down or not open.
Experience at hotel not as good as our many previous visits

Postive side: quality of food and all the waiters, waitresses, and bartenders at all locations. On the negative side: quality of our room was poor (ceiling leaked, lights did not work, no hot water in the mornings, etc.); conscierge in 8th floor club room was not helpful at all on issues we asked to be addressed; could only book reservations at 2 restaurants, should be able to do so at all (constantly saw families with small children sitting on the floor until they could get in to a restaurant); poorest quality of steak was at Wayne's Boots while others offered filets in their restaurant; entertainment around main pool was poor (eg. having a trivia question for 1 hour in which you guessed the number of pages in a book - duh..._); understaffed in the room cleaning area led to delays in getting back in to a clean room.
