Great stay - large family milestone birthday

Mary H (Edmonton, Canada) on Jan 10, 2025

Long review warning! We were a group of 9 family members (most of us first timers to Mexico and all inclusives) that came from Canada to celebrate a milestone birthday in mid-December. We stayed for 5 nig...hts on the La Perla (adults only) side, four couples and one single occupancy room. One couple was Reserve, the rest were not. We booked our vacation packages through Costco, which come with shared transport via BD Experience. We opted to book a private transfer with Cancun Shuttle, and they were great communication and pricewise. The resort is beautiful. The lobby is air conditioned, has a ton of different seating options, and has a small self-serve snack/coffee bar available 24 hours a day. The area for restaurants and bars is open air but covered, and all along the pathways are ponds filled with koi and turtles. Check in: Our group arrived from two different cities, with one group arriving mid-afternoon and had a quick check in experience. We arrived closer to 8pm and there was no line up. If you sign up for Melia rewards, you get to choose a birthday "perk" - a nominal discount towards your next booking or a room upgrade for your next stay. I chose the voucher for the room upgrade and in the fine print, it tells you to check in online (via the app) by 10am the day of your arrival to get the room upgrade. You are able to do this up to 48 hours before your check in date, so I did it a day before we flew out. It did not allow me to do apply the voucher on the app, but I did check in, so I thought I could mention it during check in at the lobby. The woman who was checking us in didn't know what to do about this voucher. She first tried to tell me that I could only use it by checking in online, and when I explained I did and it wouldn't let me apply the voucher, she called three different people to ask about it. Eventually she was able to apply it to our booking but we had to wait about an hour to get our room assigned. While we would have preferred to change and freshen up before having a late dinner at the buffet, we went down to meet with the rest of our party and eat. By the time we were done, someone was able to walk us up to our room. Room: We originally booked a junior suite king bed and the only available room upgrade (regular suite) had two doubles on the third floor. They offered to push the beds together and make it up as one bed which we agreed to. Our room had a great pool view with a hot tub and seating on the balcony. The living area was spacious and well appointed (we often had our group over for drinks in the evening) and the two double beds pushed together was hilariously large but it was fine. Our room was fairly recently "renovated" - this is compared to the junior suites that other people in our group had that were a bit tired. Despite the new-ish interior, we could tell that the facelift was done pretty shoddily (paint lines on tiles, tiles on the bathroom shower floor missing) and we had several minor complaints such as the toilet dual flush only worked on one side, the shower door was ineffective at keeping water in so our bathroom floor was soaked, the thermostat not working properly, leaving our room was freezing, and the door handle to the bathroom came off. In the app you are able to request maintenance, so we did that for the bathroom door handle and the thermostat, but when we returned to our room only the door handle had been fixed. DESPITE THIS we enjoyed our room thoroughly - you couldn't really hear neighbours unless they were being loud in the hallway and you were standing right by the door, and we were close to the restaurants, bars, and pool. Both the mini bar and housekeeping came by daily and did a great job straightening up/keeping our mini bar stocked, and there was daily turn down service (which we did not use). Restaurant reservations: We stayed on the adults only side except for one dinner. The reservation system for the a la cartes can be frustrating, but I think we lucked out. We went to guest services the first morning we were there to ask about a round of golf, and I waited for the reservation desk to open up. It was supposed to open at 9 but no one showed up to the desk until 9:15. There were a few people lined up at 9 but they gave up when no one showed. Luckily my husband was still booking his round and once she showed up, I was able to make reservations at all the AO restaurants for our entire group for decent times (6:30, 6:45) and a couple late (9pm) dinners (one because of an excursion and the other was Cielo on the family side). This definitely is luck of the draw - we arrived before a couple large wedding parties/other groups so it really depends on hotel capacity. Food: Our only frame of reference for AIs is TRS Coral, where we enjoyed the food but nothing really stood out. The breakfast buffet was fine but repetitive; we were tired of the selection by the end of our trip. Room service almost always took a lot longer than they initially quote. We tried both breakfast and late night for room service. They were fine, food at the buffet is better if you can make it down there instead. For lunches we mostly ate at Fahrenheit by the pool (did the lunch buffet once when we had a later dinner reservation). Farenheit is great - the fish tacos and tuna tacos (different than the fish) were amazing. The catch of the day (don't remember what fish it was) was also well seasoned and tasty. We ate at Tokimeku for both a la carte and hibachi. As a group we enjoyed the a la carte food more (we all like sushi/Japanese food). The sashimi was fresh and tasty and probably our favourite thing on the menu. The mains were fine but we filled up on sashimi and starters because of how yummy they were. For the hibachi, there is a LOT of food. It's typical teppanyaki fare (small starter then fried rice, shrimp, chicken, and beef). Our chef, Hugo, was friendly and made the birthday celebrant feel special. On the family side, we ate at Cielo. We had a pretty late reservation and I think the servers were running on fumes at that point. It was definitely different being around families after spending most of our time on the AO side. I'm not sure if I would recommend eating here; of all the restaurants we ate at, this one was the most lackluster. There's a huge menu selection but everything was a bit bland, and the starters were better than the mains. Tokimeku, in our opinion, is the standout restaurant. It's the ceviche bar (again our group enjoys this type of food!) and we enjoyed every single dish (it's not just fish, you'll find something for everyone). We got a private dining room (probably due to our group size) and our server was the sweetest and happy to help us. The restaurant food, service, and atmosphere pushed it to the top. One thing we did enjoy as a large group across all the restaurants was that they suggested family style starters, where they would put together platters with a bit of everything for us all to try. We were welcome to order more of something if we wanted, and order our own mains, which made things really easy and fun. For drinks, the martini bar was great. On the family side, we tried the ice cream shop (good) and there's a waffle cart that floats around and gets super busy (my brother and his fiancée witnessed someone cutting in line and then a yelling match between other guests after, just for some waffles lol). Pool: The AO pool was *COLD* - not to the point where it's unbearable but no way was it enjoyable before you got used to the temperature. They offer different aqua classes (Zumba and the like) and other activities (poolside Paella making) but the crowd was pretty quiet when we were there. The music was very loud one day (Friday?), like blaring-you-cannot-feel-relaxed loud. The other days it was still loud but not uncomfortably so. They serve food from Fahrenheit if you're sitting in the loungers, which are a bit difficult to get if you're not there early. There is a quiet zone pool but we didn't spend any time there. Beach: There is a general lack of chairs/bali beds, but we were able to get spots throughout the day (we didn't spend too much time at the beach, maybe an hour or so for a couple days). Seaweed wasn't awful when we were there, waters were a bit rough (my husband and I both lost sunglasses to the sea) and there are some rocky parts. Closer to the family side it's less rocky. Gym: We only stepped into the gym to look at it - they offer fitness classes and the gym itself seems well equipped. It's large and quiet, definitely one of the better hotel gyms I've seen. Service: Overall, service was good. There were a couple instances where servers at restaurants were tepid, but I genuinely think it was because we had some great servers that they were compared to. Most all folks gave a smile and a hi. Standouts were Hugo, our hibachi chef, Elvis around the pool, Francisco at Tokimeku, and Angelo who we met at the pool towel station and went out of his way to send us something nice for our room. Wildlife: There are some very healthy and friendly resort cats that wander around. AO side had racoons (one night we got scared by a loud crash outside our door that turned out to be a racoon feasting on someone's room service leftovers), and lizards. My husband was eaten alive outside one night hanging out at Kanna. Most of us didn't get bitten until the last couple days (it had been rainy). We didn't spend too much time going to any of the evening shows, we usually either had dinner reservations or decided to hang out in one of our rooms instead. Overall: Everyone had a good time, no one got sick, weather was much warmer than at home (it was a 45C difference!). There are certainly things that the resort can improve on (restaurant reservation system, pool chair towel game, room facelifts) but we all enjoyed ourselves and have some wonderful memories to take away.

It only takes one bartender to turn a great stay into a treasured memory

Russell B on Jan 10, 2025

I stayed with my wife for 5 nights. It was a great resort. I’m writing this review specifically to call out a single bartender. Jesus at the Kanna Bar (located at the middle of the resort between the adul...ts-only and family side). This man is special. His boss should give him a raise. Like right now. No joke. For our first two drink orders we both ordered our “regular” drinks. Jesus made them well. When he can bake to ask if we wanted another I asked him to make us both a drink of his choice. This is where the magic began. Over the course of 3 nights we faithfully returned to Jesus and we would sit down after catching his eye and exchanging greetings. He brought us drinks we would have never ordered and didn’t even know existed. I’m not talking about well known cocktails, I’m talking about creations straight from his mind. They were simple and delicious. Not too sweet and not overpoweringly spirit forward. He brought my wife a Gin drink that she loved and she DESPISES Gin. On the final evening I asked if he could bring us a spicy drink. He nodded and we saw him leave his bar, go to the kitchen area adjacent to the bar, and come back with Serrano peppers in hand. We ended up having to take the drink to-go but it was so good we didn’t need to order a drink at the Peruvian Restaurant called “Lemonfish”. The resort is wonderful. Really. But Jesus set it apart and made it special. Jesus did all this, made interesting small talk with us, had a good sense of when to give us space, and also kept the other bar patron’s orders fulfilled. When there were no drink orders he was cleaning and doing dishes. When you visit Kanna in the evening ask for Jesus and you will not be disappointed.
