Our experience at Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres was incredibly disappointing. After a 36-hour journey, we arrived exhausted and requested to extend our stay by a night. Yamil at the front desk was dismissive, unprofessional, and inconsistent, misleading us about room availability and prices. Everytime I expressed how this is unacceptable, he would roll his eyes with frustration. What should have been a relaxing trip became frustrating and stressful. For a resort marketed as a luxury destination, the service was unacceptable, and management has yet to respond to my complaint after sending emails regarding our experience. I cannot recommend this resort until significant improvements are made.
Extremely Average Stay with Bonus Food Poisoning

ROOM Since it was our honeymoon, we splashed out on a plunge pool suite. The room is lovely and spacious though the toilet isn’t particularly private as the door doesn’t meet the floor or ceiling. The plunge pool was not worth the £2k upgrade. Ours was north facing so was ice cold all day and by day 3 it was full of dead bugs. We did let the hotel know this and the next day the pool was cleaned but the issue proceeded throughout the stay. Perhaps a broken filter! The day beds were torn and tatty but fine to put a towel down on. Housekeeping wise the room was very clean. The bedding is a bit unusual in that it’s just a flat sheet between you and the duvet and not a duvet cover so it feels a bit icky to see the bare duvet. In the afternoons there is often a strong sewage smell in the room though I hear this is quite common for the area. POOLS/BEACH While the pools and beach are lovely, the hotel seems to suffer the same issue as most European resorts - sunbed hoggers! We sat in a less desirable shady cabana for 4 hours one day and saw multiple of the better cabanas in the sun stay “reserved” and unused the whole time. Not the attendants fault but when we went down at 7.15 the next morning one attendant told us it was him that put the towels out as a courtesy and that the cabana was free while 10 minutes later another attendant said he had reserved the cabana for another guest. This guest turned up 5 hours later looking for his cabana. Pools are clean but quite cold again! The loud music isn’t the most peaceful either with DJs blasting music loudly. FOOD I got the worst food poisoning of my life from the buffet on day 4. Couldn’t say for sure what it was that done it (main suspects are the chimichanga beef or plain rice at the lunchtime buffet) but I was so ill I tried to only eat bland foods like fries and plain pasta for the remaining 6 days for fear of getting ill again. Not sure if our standards are maybe higher than usual but the food by far is the worst thing about the hotel. The buffet can be quite repetitive and the Italian (where club guests can have breakfast and lunch) was bland. The majority of the teppanyaki at the Japanese was tasty. Our first visit to the Mexican was delicious but the second was pretty poor. Would love to comment on the French bistro but unfortunately our butler never gave us our reservation confirmation slip so the restaurant would not seat us. A lot of the menus are heavy on the seafood/fish. I’m not a fussy eater but I would think twice before booking if you are one. Not sure what kids would eat from the buffet? One thing we noticed is the opening days of the restaurants online didn’t match what was messaged out on the app each day so made planning in advance a bit awkward. Also found it strange that the buffet was closed for dinner some nights. SERVICE Cannot fault most of the customer service. Most staff are lovely and helpful. As Brits, we didn’t realise we would be expected to tip so often. This could definitely be an ignorance on our part though as we always tip after a meal but wouldn’t normally do so often in an all inclusive. Make sure you budget this into your spending. I think the hotel oversells the idea of a butler. It’s more a concierge service if anything. Chris, our butler, was responsive and quick during his shift. The bar staff are a highlight of the hotel, notably Manuel at the infinity pool, Miguel at the theatre bar and Carlos and the other guys at the downstairs lobby bar. One negative with the service - we told at least 3 employees that I had gotten sick from the buffet and none seemed to care! Not sure if staff are encouraged to not admit fault of the hotel? Chris advised we purchase medication from the shop downstairs and moved our dinner reservation but that was all. Later in our stay he almost used it as banter as if it was funny I was sick? Despite me never having gotten sick at any other hotel in my life. This was more disappointing than actually getting sick as with the amount of food being served and the amount of guests then statistically someone will be ill, but it was the hotels complete ignorance over the situation that bothered me. I was about an hour away from phoning for a doctor but other than an IV, I didn’t think there was much that could be done for food poisoning. VALUE/EXPERIENCE Once Chris heard that we were celebrating our honeymoon, the hotel provided nice little touches like a banner on our door, one romantic dinner on the beach and one breakfast in the room. The dinner on the beach got moved to the “lounge” due to wind. Can’t be helped but the lounge is basically a reception area and there was nothing romantic about it. At first, the majestic elegance comes across luxurious with a 5 star welcome, after a few days however, the hotel appears older than its 5 years with broken ice machines, peeling plaster and dodgy paintwork. Although we enjoyed our stay (despite the 2 days I couldn’t leave the room from being so ill) we wouldn’t say the Majestic Elegance was good value for money. We’ve stayed all inclusive at other 5 star hotels and for a fraction of the price and enjoyed those much more. As non Americans we felt a bit like outsiders with everything being catered to them whether it be food or entertainment. I think if you are an American you’d probably get a lot more enjoyment out of this hotel than we did. There was a generous check out time of 1pm. P.S. Make sure you pack all the essentials or you’ll be stuck paying $35 for sunscreen in the hotel shop if/when you run out of your own! My husband also forgot to pack a hat and the same shop wanted EIGHTY DOLLARS for a basic Cancun branded cap.
