Great resort to unplug

Great location in peninsula Papagayo with secluded black sand beach and crystalline waters. The staff and crew were absolutely fabulous and friendly; they pay attention to all our requests. However, the facilities are bit dated and need some redecoration.
Lovely resort!

This was my second trip to an all-inclusive resort, so my perspective is a little limited. However, in speaking to people I met there who go to many all inclusive resorts, their opinion was that this is one of the best. The grounds are beautiful - very lush and green, beautifully landscaped. You have to be prepared for the hills on the property. Costa Rica is a very hilly country because they have so many volcanoes, and the resort is not flat. While we found it easy to walk downhill to the main pool and restaurant area, walking around can be a workout! The resort makes it easy to get around with a well run shuttle service. If you plan on walking around the resort a lot, I would recommend bringing hiking sandals. It does rain a lot in Costa Rica and flip-flops or regular sandals will not give you the support you need, and you may fall on your backside more than once! Rooms were quite nice and clean. Only complaints there were that they don’t have enough hooks for the towels and resort provided robes, and that the lighting in the room was awful. They need to add reading lights to the beds, and another light to the room. There was a TV in the room, we didn’t watch it, but we know it worked. Good water, pressure in the shower and for the toilets. The vanity had one very long sink that served as two sinks, with enough counterspace for two people to put out their toiletries. There was no full length mirror in the room - something else that should be addressed - but there was a large in the bathroom where you could check yourself from the waist up. The mini bar included a bottle of local rum. I don’t drink rum, so I’m not sure of the quality. Other items in the mini bar included a pack of M&Ms, Pringles, sodas and water. Everything was restocked every day. Service was excellent. The people of Costa Rica are very nice, and very customer service oriented. There is an expectation for tips, but the employees at the resort were much more gentle about the whole thing. At the other resort I’ve been to, once they realized we were tipping, they wouldn’t leave us alone. That was not the case here. Regarding tipping in general, you should expect to add an extra five dollars a day to tip the shuttle drivers, in addition to the tips for housekeeping, bartending, restaurants, and concierge services. The food was very good, in some cases excellent. We had a shrimp ceviche that was out of this world, an Aztec soup that was to die for, wonderful sushi, and a ribeye steak that was as good, if not better, then the best steak at the best steakhouse in the United States! The buffet restaurant offers many, many dishes. If you can’t find enough food to satisfy your cravings, then you are such a picky eater, no restaurant can accommodate your taste. The resort does have an office for you to book your excursions. We did not use their services. We booked our excursions with Frank the tank, and it was our understanding that our excursions were better than what was offered by the resort. I would strongly recommend that you email their excursions office to discuss their offerings in detail, and then compare it to what external vendors are offering. We had a wonderful time at this resort, and met some very nice people. I was here on a girls trip, but I would love to return with my family.
