Don't have high expectations....

We travelled to Secrets St James for 2 weeks, we had booked preferred club as we done this before at a different location. We arrived at the hotel at 5.00pm there was no one to meet us on arrival we walked into reception and they couldn't find us on the system as we were preferred, so we then had to walk to preferred check in with our luggage there was no offer for someone to take our luggage or show us we were just told to follow a path! When we checked in the lady had no interest in checking us in we could hardly hear what she was saying she checked us in and gave our room keys and we had to find our own room, we were not told anything about preferred club or any other hotel information! Not what I was expecting. I asked the lady if there was any complimentary upgrades available she rang someone who then advised me categorically no and what was I expecting! I know upgrades are not always available but no need to be rude! This same lady checked us out on the day there was nothing said about 'how was your stay etc' no friendliness. Her name is Sanchia. We then went out to our taxi and the luggage was not there the person from preferred club hadn't bought them over so our taxi was waiting whilst my husband had to go with a buggy driver to get them. We had some issues with our room which did get fixed on the day, issues with the sink, door to balcony not closing, fridge wasn't working. Our room was nice and had a good view of the sea from the side. There is no checking on who is using the preferred pool or beach area people can just walk in and no one checks. The cabanas in all areas of the pool are to rent but you would have thought preferred club would have access to it but they don't, and they were hardly used. One morning at 6.50am we were going out on an excursion I went down to the club lounge to get a small coffee and was told 'no we open at 7.00' I said I only wanted half a cup and was again told no. In any other resorts they would do whatever they could to get you one but not here! It was only 10 mins until the lounge opened. We found the service has gone down with Secrets, there is no really warmth or customer service there, it's like most of the staff don't want to be there! At breakfast, lunch and dinner it was hit and miss with what friendliness you were going to get with someone, some were very pleasant and friendlyand others just dumped the plates in front of you, or half heartedly asked what you wanted. The grounds are maintained but that came with work happening around you whilst you are trying to relax, for example sanding the decking or cutting the grass. The spa was good, overpriced but we managed to negotiate some discounts, staff were friendly and welcoming and the treatments were great. We will not be coming back to a Secrets resort as they are certainly no longer a 5 star resort I would rate this more like a 4 or 4.5 at a push. I do not think we got value for money for what we paid for 2 weeks coming from the UK staying in preferred.

And and many of these trip advisories this is a great resort. I do recommending staying at preferred club if you would like to go to every restaurant and every part of the property if you don’t care about some small exclusive things it seems as you really don’t even need the preferred card to go to some areas they don’t check always, but it is nice to have the availability if needed to go anywhere on the three different properties, including orchid, Saint James, and breathless if you stay at any of the preferred sites, very nice beaches while taking care of staff was very helpful throughout the whole entire stay. The only thing I would say is maybe some small upgrades on the building or maintenance need to be done to roof didn’t affect my stay but a lot of people did comment while we were there.
