Nice, smaller property with a few issues to be aware of

Annette G (Zurich, Switzerland) on Apr 30, 2025

Very solid property with some nice advantages and a few weaknesses to be aware of. First the "not so good". Most people may know this, but there's not a real swimmable beach at the resort. There's a sma...llish beach area that opens to a ~100% rocky section. It's possible to walk across and swim but very few did and I would not w/o water shoes. The 2nd "opportunity" is room service. While we didn't order food (I heard it was very good) the annoyance here is I asked to have some extra beer brought up (they refill fridge with 2/day) so we could sit on balcony and have some (>2) beers. First they weren't very friendly when I called and told me there's a $10 charge after the 1st free refill of the trip (even for 2 beers) and they would only bring 2 at a time. I found this ridiculous at an all inclusive - they could easily fix this. Also, if you prefer something other than beer, sodas, or water (e.g., alcohol) it's not in the rooms like other all inclusives we have stayed at. Not an issue for us, but I imagine some people will be disappointed by that. My main issue with the property also is how they handle the pool. It's a nice but small pool with a totally inadequate number of chairs. It seems 50% or more of deck is covered with for-rent cabanas. We stayed 5 days and never saw an open chair as it seems most people come down and reserve before the pool opens (note: if you do this, keep towel from day before since towel stand will not be open). Seems crazy to not 1 day find an open chair w/o arriving at "7am". There were some very positives aspects of the property. It's in a great location - 5th street is a lot of fun just a block away. Very nice and swimmable beaches are a fairly easy walk - we went to one on 38th - take a right on 5th and right on 38th. The food also was very good. Buffet had a great selection of very good buffet food. The steak and Italian place were nice and so was the Mexican restaurant although it was weird it closed at 7pm. The sushi place was excellent - has a bar, tables, and is adjacent to a small pool with swim up seats. I did see some chairs here but few but not in a sunny spot. And, the small beach I mentioned is actually nice if you don't plan to swim. Plenty of chairs (unlike the pool) - I think few people make it to the beach or know of it. And there's a very nice and fun Alltra beach bar there with swings. There are also restrooms adjacent to the bar which is convenient. We spent most of our time here. Also, I really like the property "bones" - rooms are very nice, it was built with some style and is well maintained. The staff also is very helpful. Net, a more quiet (bars close at 11), older, smaller but very nice option than many all inclusives in the area in a great location with really good food and a few problems - depends what's most important to you. I'd probably stay here again even with awareness of the issues.

There is a beach! And great Ocean views.

Vika517 (Los Angeles, California) on Apr 28, 2025

We had an enjoyable stay at Wyndham Playa del Carmen overall. The customer service was truly amazing — we were even upgraded to a beautiful suite with an oceanfront view, which made a huge difference. The ...buffet was great with lots of options, and the staff throughout the hotel was consistently friendly and welcoming. Just to also intro ourselves, we are a 40 something couple who had traveled a lot, and knows between bad, good and great. However, a few things to note: there are very pushy salespeople around the property who are constantly trying to upsell timeshares and spa packages. It’s understandable, but it did get a little tiring at times when we wanted to be left alone and relax. The hotel is directly on the beach, but the beachfront isn’t ideal for swimming since it’s very rocky and shallow. You need to walk about five minutes down to find a spot where you can comfortably swim. (We liked being in front of the Hyatt which looks very sleek and new). The overall vibe of the hotel is a bit outdated and cheesy — definitely a mixed crowd of younger people looking to party and older guests, giving it a bit of a “cruise ship” atmosphere. My husband and I had never done an all-inclusive before, (sorry to the people who are pros at this, there were tons of them at this hotel) and although we got an amazing deal, it’s probably not something we would repeat at this property. As for dining: • The buffet was solid — lots of choices, decent quality — I’d rate it a 7/10. • The two à la carte restaurants (that required reservations) were subpar, so we honestly preferred the buffet experience. • The sushi swim-up bar was a bit of a letdown; the sushi wasn’t great (but understandable given the location). Mexico not Japan, so I’m not making it a negative. Our only real disappointment was the hot tub — it was very tiny, difficult to find, far away from everything, and when we finally reached it on our last night, it was lukewarm and not fully functioning. Final thoughts: If you’re looking for a budget-friendly all-inclusive with great friendly staff, decent food, and a nice view — this is a good choice. Just know it’s not super luxurious, and swimming directly in front of the hotel isn’t ideal. (To ad lots of folks at hotel we spoke to didn’t know there was another beach to swim at, we wanted the beach not the pools. Also note only one mid sized pool with no swim up bar. The pillows aren’t great, felt like they were made from hard straw. The location is right by 5th Ave, if you are looking to party (we weren’t) the crowds were wild, loud and everywhere. We went during the tail end of spring break, and it was a bit much. We’re glad we tried it, but we’ll probably explore other options next time in quieter locations.
