Great Family Resort with lots of wildlife

Tanya K (Calgary, Canada) on Nov 16, 2024

Food: Definitely not 5 star gourmet food or anything, but you won't starve. There is plenty of variety at the buffet restaurants, the food is hot, and kids will get all the hamburgers and pizza they want. The a la carte restaurants are "ok" depending on what you order. We really liked the taco/pizza restaurant where you didn't need reservations but could order off a menu. Pizza was hit or miss (sometimes awesome, other times dry.) Depended on the day. But the tacos were always good. Drinks: Lots of variety. I liked that the beach bar and the pool bar had bananas to add to drinks like dirty monkeys. It wasn't just flavored syrup. Overall the drinks were excellent at the resort. Mango martinis at the lobby bar were very good too and I liked the electric lemonade at the lobby bar. Rooms: Beds are small (just doubles) so it may be hard for some couples to share a bed. Ours was pretty short for my tall husband. We had an upper floor room in building 21 and had monkeys visit our balcony several times. Keep your balcony door closed!! They will come inside otherwise. Wildlife: This is one of the big reasons we stay here. The resort is basically set in the jungle. There are monkeys, iguanas and lizards, agoutis, coatis, and deer all over the resort. Please do not feed them!! People were constantly feeding the animals and the resort makes you sign a document that you won't! And please don't feed bread to the fish in the lagoon!! It's so unhealthy for them. Beach: We loved the safe swimming lagoon. It never had big waves, was fun for snorkeling, and didn't have seaweed. It was always clean. The water was bathtub warm too. Bring your own snorkeling gear and water hammocks or floatie toys. Pools: The activity pool was way too loud! The activity staff had their music so loud that it was like being at a disco or nightclub. We always hung out at the other quiet pool, but unfortunately some guests would always show up to play the role of pool DJ with their own bluetooth speakers. And trust me, nobody else wants to listen to your idea of fun party music!! If you want a party, please go to the other loud pool. Sadly, the resort has also put up signs that the quiet pool is for adults only. Nobody followed it because the rule was ridiculous. Either you go to the nightclub pool with your kids or your swim in the ocean. Personally, I'd like to see the signs change to just indicate that the second pool is a "quiet pool" and not adults only. Kids and teenagers can still play quietly without loud music. Xcaret park: We bought the all inclusive park pass and visited the park every day. We loved swimming the underground rivers first thing before they got busy, loved walking around the see the birds, butterflies, and animals, and we went to see both the Pre-hispanic dance performance + the evening show. Both phenomenal. We also did a snorkeling and cenote tour that we booked at the tour desk in the lobby. We found it more affordable than the other X-themed parks. Overall, we did loops of the Xcaret park next door, the beach, and the pool every day and were kept active and had lots of fun as a family.

Lovely hotel, would happily return

Honest review of the Occidental at Xcaret. Check in. After a long flight and transfer, check in was reasonably smooth. Getting to the room was a completely different experience. We was told to go down a path and wait. For who was any ones guess. Luckily, another guest gave us directions and we was soon at our room. Room 21315 The key for the room is on a bracelet fob that is put on upon your arrival. The room was spacious with a super sized bed which is comfy. Room has coffee machine and fridge which is included. Bathroom was a reasonable size however water pressure was low.The room looked like it had recently been refreshed. The maid service could be hit and miss with somedays turning up quite late. Restaurant's, food and drink. Main restaurant Food was not great but edible, we only ate here twice. Beach We ate breakfast here everyday, there was a good variety to set you up for the day. Also ate lunch here which again had a good variety. Downside is tables where not fully set up ready when you arrived. Pool Food here again was pretty decent and we always found something to tide us over until dinner. Oriental By far the best restaurant at the hotel. The food and service was very good. We ate here twice. Highly recommend Steakhouse Again, the food and service was very good that we ate here twice. Highly recommend. Seafood Good selection of dishes and was enjoyed. Italian The worst of the bunch. Cold items on plate, some also overcooked. Apple tart, couldn't even eat. Would not recommend. Drinks They have a vast array of drinks from smoothies to cocktails or just a nice cold beer. The measures are pretty decent and not overpowering Hotel grounds The hotel is located south of.playa del carmen and is set on the coast. It is surrounded by jungle with alot still remaining on site with nature trails and Mayan ruins dotted about. The resort is huge however there is a little shuttle that runs around. The beach is a small cove as it is set on a rocky coast however it was large enough to swim and relax in. It's not overly deep and you can walk out quite far before you can't touch the bottom. There is a saltwater pool.that has access to the sea and an area off the rocks where you can access to snorkel. All the pools are warm with plenty of sunbeds. There is a vast amount of wildlife around the site from monkeys and deer to coati and lizards. This was one of the main reason for us visiting this hotel. In review Huge resort with great wildlife, good food and lovely people. Only reason for not being a 5 star is the buffet restaurant and Italian let it down a little. I'd more than happily return with my family in the future
