No longer five stars

J_M_S_Toronto (Toronto, Canada) on Dec 22, 2024

The last time my husband and I stayed at Waves Hotel was in December 2018. At the time, we rated it five stars. We returned in December 2024 for 5 nights and found it had slipped in overall quality. No issues with our pool side room. In fact, it was large and modern with great amenities. The pool and spa side of the resort where we stayed was immaculately clean. The food selection was mediocre. Some meals better than others. We both agreed the grilled swordfish dish served on the Friday night was excellent. The rest of the meals were either buffet style or a la carte. We always found something to eat, it was just underwhelming and not as good as we remembered from our prior visit. Shiso, the Asian restaurant, was still under construction during our mid-December visit. We loved dining here in the past. One night they served dinner from the Shiso menu. It was probably our second favourite meal of the trip. There were many boxes of tablewares, cutlery etc. stacked in the Shiso restaurant as we were leaving. Hopefully, the restaurant will be ready to open soon. The beach in front of Waves had eroded considerably compared to our previous visit. Rocks and sea shells washed up at the front of the beach, making it tricky to enter the water. The umbrellas and chairs were crammed together like sardines on the small beach with the sun beating down in the afternoon, with no shade. It seems that climate change may be impacting the West Coast of Barbados? The food and the beach at Waves were our biggest disappointments. It was still lovely to escape from the cold Canadian winter. We really enjoyed our stay at Waves. The staff was great, too!

Still not quite five star.

We have been visiting Waves for several years. You would have thought it would be getting better now that it is owned by Marriott. Not so. They have given it a lick of paint. Bathrooms are still desperately in need of refitting. The Asian restaurant appears to have been shut for months. Why on earth would it take that long to refit it. During our week there it didn’t progress at all. I could have had it open in 24 hours with a few people working there!!! The water taxi is normally a big draw for us allowing guests to visit other hotels in the chain. Marriott have all other hotels up the coast closed so the only hotel the water taxi goes to us Crystal Cove about five minutes away. Why on earth would Marriott close and refurb several hotels at the same time. Any one with any sense would do them one at a time. We had originally booked Treasure Beach 12 months ago. It was due to open six months ago. Delay after delay. Still not open. We walked past it a few days ago and it was still closed with workmen all over it even though it was scheduled to be open the following day. I feel sorry for all those guests who were booked to stay there. Goodness knows where they will put them. Back to Waves. The staff in the most part seem fairly happy to be there. Christine in the restaurant and coffee shop continues to shine. The lads at the water sports were very good. The lad who took me sailing in the hobbie cat was good fun. Sorry can’t remember his name. The lady looking after our room did a fantastic job. Top tip. Try and book a sea view room. The view is spectacular. You will never get fed up looking at the sea.
