Oleo Small but Mighty

This was our Honeymoon and first visit to Oleo resort. My personal first visit to Mexico. We are a Canadian couple, we chose the Oleo because it was a smaller hotel and not a party resort, and we got what... we expected if not more. Upon first arrival it was much smaller in real life in the beautiful reception than in pictures but it didn't disapoint. Upon arrival (we were first to be dropped off from the airport which was great). We received two welcome glasses of champagne which were obviously well received. We were taken to our room although we could have requested the free room upgrade since we flew with Sunwing I still wanted to keep our room with the balcony. Our first room was lovely, it was extremely spacious with a lovely view of the ocean as well as the lagoon (for sunsets). However it did overlook one of the restaurant roofs which took away all the nearer beach view but looking down the beach was just as nice. We could not see the pool or anything but we still loved it we were on the 2nd floor. The second day we got a lovely creation with some wonderful divine chocolate strawberries with a note congratulating us on our honeymoon. We always were able to get chairs/umbrella's near the pool and soon found our way around. We did ask at the Spa about something we'd read about being able to use the facilities after having a service but we were told that was now only for 2 hours after or to buy a day pass. We had also read that one of the boards in the coffee shop was available for Inspira guests.. but we could literally take and or order whatever we wanted at no cost. As well as free swirl (soft serve) Ice cream in a few flavours from 11.30am to 5pm with cones and just help yourself!! It was windy, we knew it would be from watching video's online, the ocean looked pretty terrifying to attempt but we did after about 4 days, it was fun but it was all about surviving the waves. The beach was nice enough not to Cuba standard but nice. The food was good, room service was fun to order once or twice on our stay extremely easy and not met with any resentment. When tipping any staff they would all turn their back after performing any services as if to say Okay we are done, enjoy. We'd literally have to call them or run after them to give a tip, this was not something we are used to but nice to not feel overwhelmed by staff expecting tips, being Canadian tipping can become extremely expensive if you feel you have to do it with any staff member that comes toward you and can feel expected in some resorts but not this one. Food was good, always and wherever, service great always and wherever, drinks etc etc... all great. At first we didn't think we'd ever get served at the 2 bars but you soon get into the swing of which to go to when and neither are usually busy. I'm going to run through a couple staff that were so nice, kind, helpful, fun.... etc Unfortunately we didnt' get everyones name, all staff worked extremely hard whether cleaning, preparing, serving or just being welcoming. Room Cleaning always excellent and a full fridge with water, soda's and beer replenished daily. We met a young lad outside his name was Christopher I think he maybe worked out back he really wanted to learn English he was very polite and we'd have loved to spend more time talking to him, he talked to us when we were looking for lizards. Entertainment guy Rambo - so good at what he does, made everyone feel special and like we all mattered to him. Loved the enterainment it wasn't 'in your face' it was there if you wanted to participate and fun for I would say everyone, not pushy just relaxing and really great. Ham a waiter in the main buffet restuarant was the best from the second he met us he remembered our order every day and had it ready for us before we sat down, never once did we have to tell him again and he went above and beyond to make us feel special. There was a young lad in the lobby bar with glasses he too always so friendly smile and a very hard worker. The two ladies that worked in the Brown Bag one young lady and a more mature lady always sweet helpful and patient. We did have one very unfortunate night and ended up getting quite upset four nights in, for some reason at around 10.45pm, this is quite late at a quiet laid back resort with no evening entertainment to really speak of, we started hearing loud hammering, metal clanking, spanners/wrenches dropping every few seconds, and an electric power saw. Now we're not going to complain until later but it did wake us as we'd had a long day going into the market where you get accosted by vendors quite scary for two females travelling so we had gone to bed around 10pm. Around 12.15pm the noise was just so loud and relentless it sounded like it was literally in our room, so I called down to lobby, someone came up to our room almost immediately and I explained it was coming from the restaurant at the back it was the really nice sea view restaurant on the far corner toward the point. There were about 5 people working with flashlights on their heads to fix a metal door or make one, and obviously being dark things were getting dropped and power tools were going full tilt. The person called me and said 15 minutes and the work would stop.... So obviously at 2.36am when I called down again because maybe the power tools were not being used as frequently they were still dropping things and metal on metal was LOUD. The guy I spoke to got quite defensive and said 'they're not loud'.. Well yes they are I can literally talk to them they're that close and the sound was carrying right into our room with the door closed. We paid a lot of money for this trip it was to be a special trip too not listening to this so we'd lose a night and a day etc because for some reason this door fixing had to be done in total darkness outside at this time!! The next morning shattered as it pretty much went on until 4am or so I spoke to Stephanie? in the reception and told her our plight, she read through the notes and was very professional dealing with me because I was so nervous this would keep happening. She allowed us to move rooms which sure was a pain but what else could she really offer us ? We moved to an equal room perhaps smaller, the balcony was smaller but the view was nicer, we could see the pool and the beach with no obstruction and no more power tools. We were happy with the outcome it's all an adventure so long as someone is trying to help and we were not feeling ignored. All in all it was a wonderful trip. Thank you :)
Almar and Idgardo are the best at Oleo!

Idgardo is a fantastic server at Almar. He kept the wine coming and made sure that my shellfish allergy was noted and my meal wouldn’t cause any allergy attacks. He was very friendly and even brought out a...ll the desserts when me and my party couldn’t decide. He also brought the chef out and introduced us. Fantastic service and food from Almar. Definitely the best restaurant at Oleo Cancun!
